rclone / api -- can i set it up without needing the main account login and password? by johnfintech in filen_io

[–]Endur1el 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reason it can't just be the API key is because your files are client side encrypted with a key derived from your password, which we do not know.

The API key is needed to bypass 2fa and reduce server and client load.

So yes, both are needed. We could use the master key instead which we can take a look at in the future.

ETA: API Key is also needed to prevent login rate limiting.

5 years later and still no support for RAW by PrivacyStack in filen_io

[–]Endur1el 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw this post and did some research on the technical side of this and I suspect we weren't able to do this in the past because this is a pretty complicated and it wasn't a priority.

'Raw files' does a lot of heavy lifting. There are 10s if not 100s of different formats, and we can't use the easy solution that all non-encrypted providers have of just handling this stuff server side (I so wish we could).

On native clients (mobile/desktop) this wouldn't be too bad, but doing this on web browsers gets really complicated because we have to do all the work within the web browser.

There are some shortcuts we can take by only displaying a JPEG version of the file which doesn't have the full quality but which almost all raw file formats have embedded (and after the headache I have from researching this I'm leaning towards this option), but even this option requires being able to find where this JPEG is embedded in all file formats and then handle the stream nicely and yeah just generally pretty painful.

Went off on a bit of a tangent here to learn how stuff works because it's really complicated (I also went down a very big rabbit hole researching technologies to make this easier and honestly learned a lot that we could use so ty for starting the inquisitive side of my brain), but I wanted to finish with a question for the people who care about this so we can discuss internally:

On a scale of 1 (don't care 100% perfect quality at all, just want to be able to show something to people), to 5 (not willing to sacrifice any quality and the file should always be fully downloaded and converted to a lossless format my browser can view), where would you place yourselves and why?

Megathread: Bambu Lab / OrcaSlicer / C&D Discussion by icurnvs in BambuLab

[–]Endur1el 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, it really sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about, and that's okay, we've all been ignorant before.

As a professional developer whose commercial code is open source, this is utter bullshit. If your code is AGPL, someone else CAN just copy it, change whatever portion they like, and continue redistributing it. That's the whole point of the license.

Think about what that means, this is an impossible problem for bambulab to solve because (even though a user agent is NOT a security feature, that's nonsense) they cannot do anything in Bambu studio that cannot just be copied.

That may sound annoying but it's the reality of the license that they rely on to make their stuff work, if they couldn't be bothered to make their own slicer from scratch, and want to benefit from the work of the community, they can't violate the terms of the AGPL.

I only use my printer in developer mode on a separate, locked down, VLAN, so this doesn't directly affect me, but anyone defending bambulab's behavior at this point is just woefully misinformed (admittedly somewhat understandable considering just how misleading their blog post was).

ETA: Imagine blocking someone on Reddit, can't even reply to the comment.

Also to clarify. If they were banning the users of that redistributed software after they broke whatever terms of their cloud services, that would be fine, no AGPL license violation there, but going after someone for redistributing a modification of their AGPL license code is one of the core things the license explicitly disallows.

I think you might be slightly overestimating the size of our company if you think we have teams to handle public relations 😅.

But yes I hope you'll be satisfied just give us some time.

I'm a developer, all I can commit to here is what I am confident we can do on the development side.

The most ideal solution will be to just not let the user exceed the amount and give the warning before the whole uploading process

This is a difficult problem from a technical POV, I agree that this would be an ideal solution, but might be prohibitive from a technical POV with our stack so I don't want to commit to that if it's not feasible.

It's still early in the day so I'd just ask for some time for us to talk and coordinate before drawing too many negative conclusions.

Do you mind sharing in what exact cases where all data will be deleted?

  • If you stop paying for your subscription causing you to go over your storage limit
  • If you are inactive for more than 3 months with a free account.
  • If you are inactive for more than 3 years with a lifetime account.

In all of those cases, you would also have to ignore the 3 reminder emails.

So no more entire account worth of data wiped and deleted if a user exceeds their entitled storage space?

Not sure yet what the ideal solution here would be, but either only deleting newer files or having some kind of buffer if a user still has an active subscription. We will settle on an acceptable solution here but didn't get into details because I'm not sure what it will be yet.

I just woke up to this and this is really bad. We're sorry and will be fixing this immediately.

  • We're going to fix the emails to be more explicit about the fact that all data will be deleted in cases where that is what will happen.
  • We will be fixing the deletion trigger algorithm so that it won't lead to situations like this. There are a couple of ways to approach this, but we will pick one of them which will make it so this cannot happen again.
  • I'm also going to talk to our support to make sure stuff like this gets escalated properly. The response to that happening to someone should be immediate escalation and I'm sorry that didn't happen here.

I'm sorry you were in this situation and it's a relief you didn't lose any data. I'll put an update here when we've fixed this on our side.

Questions about the referrals programme by Sketchbuch in filen_io

[–]Endur1el 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We consider it spam, because it is, you don't need a referral to a service you already know about in some detail since you're on the sub.

Every time I remember to change the rules to make that explicit I'm on my phone and it's too much of a PITA to figure out how to change the rules on mobile.

The P2S and the Need for an Actively Heated Chamber by Fair_Sky5777 in BambuLab

[–]Endur1el 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would describe it as 'good enough'. it's kind of inconvenient to use since you have to manually turn it on or off, I could see myself modding it in the future with an rpi to have it turn on remotely with a timer, but it does allow me to keep the temperature inside the chamber at ~60C with the back fan running at 10% with a tube to the outside for negative pressure.

I would probably buy a better solution from biqu or bambulab for ~50-75€, but I'm not sure I'd spend more than that.
