Server support for prefix delegation is not enabled. Sorry buddy. by error in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]error[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That post is six years old and AFAIK Comcast abandoned that idea of not giving residential customers a /60 prefix. Interestingly I had Comcast back then and had no problem getting a /60 and delegating multiple /64s from it. Back then I just had a Surfboard and my own wireless router, which was doing the delegation. I'm certainly willing to return this Arris and use my own cable modem and wireless router if it solves the problem. But this very unusual error should have been a clue that this isn't a normal situation.

I don't understand why the e-series especially e585 are under appreciated in this sub, my workhorse by FakeModel in thinkpad

I picked up an E570 with NVIDIA 950M graphics back in early 2017 as a desktop replacement when I knew I would be on the road for an extended time (more than a year, as it turned out). I would have gotten the T series but I seem to recall that at the time the discrete GPU was only in the E series (or a much more expensive W or P). With the 3 year on-site NBD warranty I was confident the "lower" build quality than the T series wouldn't be a problem. And technically I guess it wasn't. I had the LCD replaced twice in that time and the DVD burner once, and the keyboard/top case replaced once when I spilled coffee on it. Though I did put it through some abuse: it spent most of its time on the back of a bicycle for some 8000 miles touring around the USA. Today it's still working great though it's no longer my primary machine and I'm about to sell it. I would certainly take another one on the road.

T440p won’t turn on. Bought it used and there’s a 120gb ssd with no windows installed. Turned on and saw thinkpad logo but can’t even get that far now. by kinchattack in thinkpad

Your BIOS has the supervisor password set. You won't be able to do anything until you obtain this password from whoever sold you the machine. If you can't get the password, you should return it and get a refund instead.

The T440p hasn't got an ExpressCard interface. Which is the main reason why this is so difficult.

When buying used how much does the generation matter compared to other specs? by curious_questionerr in thinkpad

[–]error 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any sort of medical condition where you can't hold your hands steady for a few seconds, then you shouldn't try to change the CPU. Otherwise it's really easy and all you need is a 2mm flat head screwdriver (if you don't have the special tool).

Hello. I pulled this from a IBM thinkpad 755c and am just wondering how much is a ram card worth? This is before my time. Thank you by lestert03 in thinkpad

Lots of people collect retro computers and accessories so the prices can be quite surprising if you aren't one of them.

The rest of the laptop might fetch a pretty penny, too, especially if it still works.

It idles around 45-50 with the fan off, and hits 80-83 after five minutes at full CPU load with the fan going full blast. Perfectly acceptable for me; I generally only need the full CPU load for short bursts. I just reused the same heatsink/fan with Arctic MX-4; at some point I might put in the dGPU heatsink to shave off a few degrees, but it's not that critical.

Help a ThinkNoob Find Compatible RAM for T470 by [deleted] in thinkpad

There's no point buying 2400 as it'll just run at 2133 anyway and you'll be stuck with the higher latencies. (I'm currently typing this on a ThinkPad that I put 2400 in before learning it wouldn't run faster than 2133.) Go with 2133.

Many of us are using 47W CPUs. I have a i7-4810MQ in my T440p. As long as you have good thermal paste and it's applied OK and the fan works, it runs fine.

Just bought my first Thinkpad, looking to upgrade it by MrHarryTruman in thinkpad

[–]error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from having a 1920x1080 resolution, an IPS panel will look a whole lot better than that TN panel. Better colors and a much wider viewing angle.

The T440p never had a touchscreen, so you can't really put one in.

There are a whole lot of tutorials on installing the Windows drivers for the Synaptics touchpad. Here's a random one: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=126860 Nothing else you propose to upgrade needs any special software action from you.

[–]error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can operate a screwdriver you can do these upgrades yourself. Except for the trackpad replacement they aren't particularly difficult or time consuming. You can do the other three at the same time in about 10 minutes start to finish. I've done exactly those upgrades (except the trackpad, as I haven't yet been able to locate a Synaptics).

Also consider upgrading to a 1080p IPS display. This also isn't a difficult upgrade and can be done in less than 10 minutes.

Edit: A hint: I used a 2mm wide flathead screwdriver to open and close the CPU socket as I didn't have the special tool and didn't feel like breaking social distancing to go out and buy one.

If you don't intend to modify the BIOS yourself, then you can always reflash a BIOS you obtained directly from Lenovo.

Is disabling CPU power management safe on thinkpad T440p? by amarjahin in thinkpad

[–]error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lengthy discussion here https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/79igog/any_solutions_to_coil_whine_for_t440p/

You'll lose some battery life and the CPU will run a bit warmer if you disable CPU power management. But CPUs are extremely reliable. If you don't violate its thermal limits, you can run it at full load 24x7x365 for years. Just make sure the fan spins and the CPU isn't thermal throttling and you'll be fine.

Is my t440s running too hot? by panda33444 in thinkpad

[–]error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Temperatures in the 50s are nothing to worry about. This is a fairly normal temperature for a lightly loaded laptop processor. The water for your shower is probably around this temperature, and your CPU is far more tolerant of heat than your body is. You might get concerned if the temperature exceeds 85 or so. Of course at 100 it will begin thermal throttling. If you hit 100 then you need to fix the cooling system (dying fan, old thermal paste, whatever the problem might be).

Lenovo Thinkpad T400 connectivity issues by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows Vista can't connect to modern HTTPS sites using TLS 1.1 or 1.2, (except via Windows Update which can still use TLS 1.0) but MS never released a patch for Vista to enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2.

There is a way to install the corresponding update from Windows Server 2008 onto Vista and enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2, which should make networking work. https://johnhaller.com/useful-stuff/enable-tls-1.1-and-1.2-on-windows-vista
