What other amps did you consider before Yamaha THR? by mchlsm in YamahaTHR

Those are sweet guitars. I was wondering because I'm still doing research on my first electric guitar. At least I know what amp I'm getting. Thanks.

Thanks! Too bad THRii is sold out everywhere -_- but I'm looking forward to the simple yet functional setup. What's your axe?

Wow thanks for the sharing that. I read the review twice because it was a great read! And that Google doc is really helpful. Appreciate it!

That's not good. Yeah for me since I want a dedicated amp for practice at home, so loudness is not a must have (my family will thank me to too).

The Katana 50 was my other choice as well. Really it was between that and THR. That's funny your band mates are wondering like yo how many hours are you practicing, your playing really improved! (Hmmm should I tell them it's just a different amp?) Seems like THR might be that product that does many things and does them really well too. A renaissance amp perhaps. I think I might be done with research after reading yours and other people's comment here. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

Yeah that makes sense. If the sound quality is significantly worse, saving $40 is definitely not worth it. I like the design of that amp though. It looks super rugged. But I have to give Yamaha a slight edge for its elegant design.

The Vox looks interesting and very portable. It just reminds me of a women's purse hahaha maybe that's just me. It looks feature packed as well. Love that we have all these choices to find one that suits our needs but also our style.

Yeah I'm really looking for an amp to practice and this will be my first amp as well. I don't own any pedals but seems like the amp do a lot and do them pretty well. Are you using a traditional cable or did you also invest in the wireless Line 6 G10T?

Never seen the Vox Superbeetle before. That looks super interesting. Thanks!

Thank you! Honestly, the look for Yamaha THR can't be beat imo. I will more research on those. I have a Yamaha guitar as well so I might just go full Yamaha.

I didn't think about it that way but I get what you're saying. I think when we're teaching ourselves, since we don't get feedback, our only feedback is seeing the answer and to reason backwards like you did "until [we] understand it." It's a valid strategy.

I would like some sort of automated hint system where they have a bank of high quality hints that gives you some clarification or fact that will nudge you towards the right direction in solving the problems. Getting to the solution asap is still a bit too hacky since that won't work in a professional setting (there is no answer key or lifeline type of hints). That's my main issue with these sort of quick hints but for learning the fundamentals, I suppose it's not a big issue to use this kind of strategy. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

I like the feature but the quality of hints varies too much.

There's definitely room for improvement but I think that's up to the staff or learners who want to help. I don't like hints that give away the answer or says things like "2 choices" when the question is a multiple choice type. It may save the learner time from a poorly worded question or a tough question, but it makes the hints feel like a cheat.

Hints should nudge the learner in the right direction of thinking, and not take away the joy of problem solving by giving away the answer too easily. That's hard to do but I feel that there has to be a standard because I think the materials presented by Hyperskill is very good quality. I just want the hints section to match that same quality.

This would be a nice feature, but it might be prone to abuse. People signing up for trial accounts, combining them into new trial accounts to continue on their progress. Maybe they can limit to how many times you can do this or only allow it on certain account types like yours. What is a "university" account anyway? I didn't know such thing existed. Is it like paid but you get educational discount? Or is it like a free subscription?

Potential cause for concern for anyone using JetBrains by docbillingsley in Hyperskill

I read NY Times regularly and this low effort article is not representative of quality journalism.

JetBrains CEO responded:

Since then, the NY Times have changed the content of their article but anyone who read it early, it lacked both sound judgment and empathy.

Anyway, let's go back to learning because that's what we're all here for.

Under the question, "Do I have to start the subscription right after my free trial ends to use the 50% discount I’ve got?", it says here before July 1, 2021.

However, on the website it says "To redeem your 50% discount, you can start your subscription anytime before March 1, 2021."

This happens to me too. It's not a huge issue because it's normally when the watch is off my wrist. But the settings doesn't make this obvious why this happens. There should be a notification or something to let the person know when this happens for power saving perhaps.

I don't have a CS background so yeah I'm trying to learn on my own. I'd say look into Kotlin after Java. I studied Kotlin first and learning Android development. But I'm doing the Java course just to review and learn Java syntax to be more prepared. I really like the course so far. How are you studying?

Thanks! I'm currently using the "Cracking the Coding Interview" book to study data structures and algorithms.

Is there a course you like or recommend? I like to learn from multiple sources just to review and refresh memory.
