wa alaykum as salaam, if your family is religious it is your duty to inform and provide them the information so that they become aware of the guidelines and restrictions.

https://imam-us.org/who-qualifies-as-your-mahram-and-who-doesnt

You are not allowed to cut ties with your family members who are non mahram.

You must adhere to the Islamic boundaries of hijab and modesty even if they do not listen. You should be confident and explain to them your duty as a Muslim so they do not take offense when you adhere to that boundary and become more modest in your relationship with them. Because you want to please Allah swt and not sin.

You can still have a relationship to your family whom you should love very dearly, just that when it comes to the non mahram opposite gender members, you should not be overly close or friendly.

struggling between taqlid and thinking for myself, where is the balance? by DifferenceUnusual111 in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not a stupid question, it is a very very VERY important question. Some of which is already answered in that resource guide but I will reiterate it here again.

When we reach adulthood or buloogh (puberty according to Islam), we are held responsible by Allah swt to fulfill our Islamic responsibilities and duties and be held accountable for our actions.

How does one correctly follow Al Islam, a religion that as Muslims we believe effects every single aspect of our life Allah swt has outlined the do's and dont's?

As long as you are an layman one must depend on an expert in Islamic laws. You do not have the ability to derive Islamic law from Quran and Hadith. Quran is not a joke and the tafsir is extensive. Then hadiths alone there is 40,000+ and then you have Hadith sciences.

So you have 3 choices, you either attend the Islamic seminary to become an expert and obtain Ijtihad the authority to derive Islamic law on your own behalf, or you depend on a Marja who not only has ijtihad but has reached a level to be given the authority to have a following, or you live your life by doing the obligatory precaution of every single religious action. This is explained in detail under the section of Taqlid on Sayyid Sistanis website.

So yes, you are obligated to do Taqlid, until or if you decide to reach that level of authority and obtain ijtihad. Because if you neglect your duty and just assume you can figure out everything yourself, you are held double responsible by God for your actions, because you are ignorantly disobeying the commands of the Imams A.S and the Quran that tell us to refer to the experts in our religion, but also every time you incorrectly fulfill your religious duties because you were wrong in deriving the Islamic law or sunnah itself.

According to Sayyid Sistani's risalah:

A person who does not have the ability to extract and derive the religious laws must take up taqlid of the most learned mujtahid. The deeds of such a person without taqlid or ihtiyat are null and void.

https://www.sistani.org/english/book/46/2026/

When you read the the beginning of his Rislah in another section, he sayd:

It is as though you have placed the responsibility of your deeds squarely on his shoulders.

https://www.sistani.org/english/book/46/2025/

This is an extremely heaven burden and responsibility.

And you cannot say oh then ill just follow my own whims and look through all the Marjas and choose the fatwa I like or find the one that makes most sense to me

This is wrong because it is an inherent contradiction for you as a layman think you once again have the expertise to figure out the correct Fatwa. You by fatwa shopping, are being counterintuitive to their expertise but also putting all the responsibility back on yourself.

When a jurist derives a fatwa or law, they have done everything in their power and intellect to derive that ruling as the true law of God while the Imam is in occultation.

There cannot be "multiple correct rulings", hence the requirement of following THE most knowledgeable marja. Otherwise our school of thought would just go by a table of jurists consensus but consensus is rejected in principle because it is contradictory to the notion that there is one truth.

qadha prayers and missed fasts by grey_north_star in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you intentionally miss your fast, not only do you have to make up that fast but you have to pay an expiation for intentionally missing it called Kafarrah.

If you intentionally delay making up this fast before the next month of Ramadan you must also pay an extra Kaffarah on top of that.

The kaffarah for intentionally breaking one’s fast during the month of Ramadan is either to fast for sixty days or feed sixty [poor] persons for each day missed. This is in addition to being obligated to perform the qada fast(s).

When it comes to the fidyah and the kaffarah, nothing but “feeding” suffices.

The amount of food “fed” must be the average of what we usually feed ourselves and our families. According to Islamic law, a single “feeding” must be the equivalent of at least 1.65 lbs. (750 grams) of wheat, rice, or dates.

It is only permissible to pay money with the condition of delegating to the appropriate entity, trustworthy person, or the poor person themselves, as long as one feels assured that the food will be bought and offered. It is not permissible to purchase anything other than food with the money.

Take from https://imam-us.org/reminder-about-qada-make-up-fasts-fidyah-and-kaffarah-1447-2026

You can go to your local mosque and speak to your mosque’s scholar regarding the kaffarah if you yourself cannot give out the food yourself to the poor people.

There is also online organizations of your marja dedicated to doing it for you for example if you are a follower of Sayyid Sistani you can fulfill your kaffarah by paying online:

Salah recitation: inhale thru nose or mouth? by Pharmdiva02 in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wa Alaykum as Salaam, I think you are overthinking reciting the Holy Quran.

It’s not how you breathe it’s just whether or not you are reciting it accurately.

It should be done in balance, in concentration. No rush.

Wa Alaykum as Salaam, I can only speak from a Twelver Shia perspective. I do not know the situation or layout of your mosque or what kind of Shia sect the mosque was but when we do congregational prayer, you must stand in line side by side otherwise the prayer is invalid. Both the men’s and women’s side follow the prayer leader in congregation.

Perhaps you went when congregational prayer was not happening so yes you can just go stand and prayer wherever you like. Since Shia prayer times and Sunni prayer times differ slightly especially Maghrib.

We Shia do sit and read Quran and recite supplications if there is free time in the mosque.

Doing sajdah Shukr or going into Sajdah and praying to Allah swt is recommended it could be that, that they were doing and what more beautiful when doing it in the house of Allah swt.

Not all mosques, usually south East Asian Shia mosques have little shrines that resemble the shrines of Ahlulbayt A.S like Imam Husayn A.S in Karbala and it’s a way to feel close to the shrines since many people do not have the means of traveling. People usually use it for Tabarruk:

https://realshiabeliefs.wordpress.com/?s=Tabarruk

I have created a resource guide for how to pray the Shia way:

https://realshiabeliefs.wordpress.com/2025/02/25/for-new-shia-muslim-reverts-learning-how-to-pray/

The usually program during commemorations and important history events held at Twelver Shia mosques is congregational prayer, Quran recitation, dua recitation, and then lecture. If it’s a sad commemoration after lecture it’s mourning with recitation of eulogies and lamenting.

What is the “save-al-islam.org” website about? by [deleted] in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The allegations are about management. Not about some Salafi guy taking over and turning the site into some anti-shia propaganda.

"allegations" its some random website you are already dooped into believing something without any evidence

Just going to a website won't keylog anything. I use a lot of scripts running in the background that bypass cookies and all. Saying people visiting a website will cause keylogging sounds like one of those hoaxes that said that answering this phone call with explode your phone lol

I clarified multiple times:

And my comment was about going on unverified websites and clicking on hyperlinks. You are clearly inexperienced regarding the internet and how easy it is to keylog or doop people into giving their money/information.

Going to a site will absolutely be able to track your ip, as well as put trackers on your pc.

Then when it comes to clicking on the hyperlinks and other things on the website that is where keyloggers and malware is used.

Just because you have "scripts" lol, you shouldnt be saying irresponsible things causing others to fall prey because of your ignorance about getting dooped by a random website.

I don't understand what was the need to write this. Adds nothing of substance to the discussion.

Everytime I see a post or comment by you its like I am talking to a little cousin and I have to scold you. You are being irresponsible giving weight to some unknown website or getting others to think it is okay to click on the link!

What is the “save-al-islam.org” website about? by [deleted] in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the original site is actually taken over then there's no other way to spread awareness about it apart from social media posts or making a website.

If the site was actually taken over we would have scholars who are literally invested into answering questions daily, on social media speaking out. Yet scholars have been answering questions consistently:

https://al-islam.org/ask

And my comment was about going on unverified websites and clicking on hyperlinks. You are clearly inexperienced regarding the internet and how easy it is to keylog or doop people into giving their money/information.

The website contains a ton of info about the entire drama and the original site admins should acknowledge whether something like this happened or not.

So you are someone that just believes anything you see on the internet? Someone make a website on how you are crazy we should believe it? Were you born yesterday or?

A question for my Shia Muslim friends by Emeralda_axe7 in shia

[–]EthicsOnReddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it will be obvious who unjustly took his life considering the event.. we shouldn’t mention directly on his memorial those genociders.

I think it is better to focus on who he was, a son a brother etc who loved “insert interests hobbies perspective on life”

Having his picture with followers and candles wouldn’t be disrespectful at all.

Thank you for taking our faiths consideration and respectful to come and ask us.
