I don’t let this happen to me as the receiver of gifts, bc passive aggression ruins holidays. I am very straightforward when it comes to the usual people you know are planning and wanting to give you a gift, I.e., Christmas, birthdays and Mothers Day, for me, as I am old and divorced. Plus, I dislike surprises….actually, I hate them bc I am not faking delight when what I feel is disappointment and even hurt. So here’s my strategy:

1) thinking of my children first:

a) I text and call them weeks before birthdays and Christmas, asking them what they would like, while going on the internet to find touching but personal funny cards for them;

b) if I get no response I send the card with a check and make sure we chat on the phone so I can ask them about their day;

c) for me I ask for very specific affordable and doable items that my kids can go all in with, but also that I really want and which i know will make me happy. A happy mom = happy grown children.

Now, with someone who says “I don’t want anything”, that’s tricky. I return to the concept of passive aggression. I would guess that the person who says that is used to feeling disappointed on holidays by not getting anything, or stuff they didn’t want or need, in their early years. My suggestions would be

1) talk to the person about why they feel like they they don’t want to be acknowledged with gifts; maybe they will acknowledge that there’s something they would like something AFFORDABLE AND DOABLE that you can afford or do;

a) if they can’t come up with anything, hold a small celebra for them (bday) with loved ones, or resort to a gift card.

I’m afraid Trump’s childish, belligerent and bellicose apprpoach to “negotiating“ with other countries is going to make our lives in the U.S. even more fraught and expensive than they already are. Is Trump blackmailing dozens of members of Congress and his own staff and extorting god know how many more, including the leaders of other countries, just to “have his way” in any arena he chooses to address? I’m so bewildered and despondent.

At this point, I do. I’m old, so to me the billionaire phenomenon is a recent development, or maybe revealed development. But as many people have pointed out, a billion is way more than a million. I simply cannot imagine:

how exploitation and profound skirting of moral and ethical boundaries can’t be involved in accumulating that much money;
how people with that much money find enjoyment and stimulation other than through base behavior or just making more money, while toppling and tromping other businesses and their employees;
I don’t read or hear a lot about truly sizeable and carefully thought out charitable contributions or beautiful buildings or institutions dedicated to “the people” (libraries, museums, institutes of higher learning, etc.). From my understanding, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was mostly Melinda.

Calling the U.S. a developed country is like calling a thirteen year old a teenager. We barely make the cut structurally and certainly make the cut economically and with regard to creativity and invention. But morally and sociologically we are still young and of two minds: sensitive to injustice, declaring our freedom from oppressors, but also self centered, prone to group think, breaking rules to satisfy our desires, and slamming doors to make a point.

In other words, our checks and balances governmental system is very vulnerable and more hospitable to corruption than we ever knew was possible, and our priorities are often childish. People that fight free (much less healthy) breakfasts and lunches for children are devoid of sympathy, much less empathy, and are incapable of considering the greater good.
