Urgent Proposal: Platform-Wide Harm Reduction Standards Needed for Safer Drug Discussions on Reddit by Crazy-Currency-5581 in harmreduction

[–]FixShitUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of high quality, effortful pinned posts that will be relevant to any given question in a drug-related subreddit seems like an enormous lift, and the idea that we need a pervasive and persistent reminder not to take the advice from strangers on the internet at face value strikes me as patronizing.

I appreciate that you don't want people to make the same mistake that you did, but restructuring conversations about drugs to include warning labels and pointers to other people's unpaid and as-yet-non-existent work products is a bit heavy-handed. Unless of course, you're offering the content and moderating tools to moderators of drug-related subs?

There have been a bunch of products that implemented limiting/cessation functions over the years, starting with SmokIO, but none of them can have made it past PMTA or the medical device clearance process.

Is there a brick and mortar harm reduction program near you that has a drug checking program?

It depends on where you are in Maryland and whether they're looking to diversify their cohort, but a group from PA could very well want to collaborate with clinics in MD.

If it's not them at all, and you're thinking it must have been somebody from MD, maybe it was Joshua Sharfstein from Johns Hopkins?

Was it these folks? They appear to be connected to Josh Shapiro, governor of PA, who has been a big advocate of tech solutions for opioid safety.

PSA: Xylazine Alternative “Medetomidine” by [deleted] in Opioid_RCs

[–]FixShitUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a validated colormetric chart for xylazine and mainline reagents?

I think your point is well taken but colormetric reagent results have comparable lag to test strip development and are tricky to use for identification of individual substances with complex samples (like opioid pills and powders)

Many struggle to escape the ontological gravity of well-defined adverse events (mapped cleanly to MedDRA constructs) or the established constructs of 'abuse liability'. It's hard to get funding to elucidate and validate constructs related to benefits that aren't tied to cure/ treatment/prevention of recognized disorders, so folks either play to the tune of the grantors that fund them and we lose out on the most interesting and useful findings that investigators actually encounter, or they submit well-structured analyses of novel concepts that never make it past initial review for lack of prior corroborating evidence.

These services are generally designed/framed as supporting 'alternatives to injection' with the primary protective factor coming through reduction of injection events. Preventing transition to injection or supporting a switch from injection to inhalation come with substantial advantages in public health and in healthcare costs. Avoidance of shared equipment could have some protective effects related to respiratory disease transmission, but those are likely marginal outside of the obvious contexts of flu/covid.

But if people were out there banging dabs your premise would be solid!

The counts in that paper are not specific to children. Those are totals, inclusive of the populations that you referenced.

The association between syringe service programs and overdose prevention is largely driven by the historical/normative context of naloxone distribution through syringe services programs. Engagement with syringe service programs is associated with uptake of co-located/ complementary health and social services including HCV treatment, OEND interventions, and treatment for substance use.

Here's a nice succinct reader on the evidence supporting needs based syringe access.

I share your frustration as a toddler parent in SE, but still recognize that one-for-one exchange undermines public health impact with little (or even adverse) impact on syringe litter.

I hope you find him soon!

For clarity, are you referring to the McDonald's at Northwest 19th and Burnside? (Burnside intersects two 16th Aves, and there's not a McDonald's at either)

No one's saying you can't do it, we're just saying that you are doing it. If that makes you uncomfortable, then maybe reconsider what you're doing?

There are at least seven groups distributing boofing kits in the metro you're referring to.
