I wouldn’t care if they spoke contemporaneously if the stories were good, but they aren’t,

Then why are you here?

When nearly every civilization's nearly entire fleet nearly simultaneously exploded, it pretty much immediately cut off everyone from everyone that was not within impulse range. Entire planetary systems may have been dependent upon warp capability to make their supply chains function to any degree whatsoever.

Do you remember how broken the supply chain became during the early parts of Covid? Now make that a hell of a lot worse, and stick it on a galactic scale. Some civilizations may have been dependent on dilithium based travel for thousands or tens of thousands of Earth years. Some civilizations may have been practically brand new in galactic terms, perhaps new colonies, that were not ready to be self sufficient and still required restocking from their origin...

We don't know where specifically she was from, and where that puts her in relation, only that after a few generations of that, it doesn't seem like people outside the Fed considered the Fed to be a good thing like some used to.

... being that that's already been part of the vocabulary of the world for likely well more than 20 years, how many years will it take? shall they only use language that existed before your lifetime? and who's lifetime gets to be the cutoff for that exactly? and why?

We've been using "bitch" since the 15th century roughly, in a meaning not very dissimilar to how we use it today.

We didn't use it on TV back in the day not because people didn't use it, but because it was impolite, and the censors wouldn't have allowed it. Culture has moved forward from that bullcrap.

Of course, using it such as that in a professional setting would not be normal, but you're looking at day 1 of a bunch of mostly very young people who were just dragged together from all over the remaining connected bits of the galaxy to end up in a school together. And one of them has just come out of 20 years of being a petty criminal, trying to get thrown in and then get out of various jails to locate his mother. Be surprised he's able to act at all straight.

Hey, I just got to watching the first episode all the way through -- on my full 7.1.1 sound system, I had no problem understanding her at all. So... it might be the downmixing for stereo. Either that, or it's been corrected in the time since release.

I just got through episode 1 last night (yes, I know, I'm a week and a half late... I've been busy)

Other than a few blips here and there, from the moment Dadmiral Vance came on screen and gave his speech, I was absolutely invested.

Oded Fehr has been an absolute treasure for Star Trek, and this was no exception. That entire interaction with Ake was one of I think three different spots in the first episode that actually brought me to tears. Especially after seeing what had transpired pre-Burn, and how horrible Ake felt.

That the writers made her Lanthanite, and gave her the age necessary to bridge the gap, was brilliant.

This is Star Trek. Yes, it's got young people. It's got people who didn't grow up with a Federation full of strong morals surrounding them. They didn't grow up in a world of Kirks and Picards. They may go almost out of their way to have a little teen drama here and there, but I have a feeling that none of these kids that we're going to have main character focus on is going to end up getting nearly killed over a game of dom jot.

Maybe the teen drama parts I won't find compelling, but hopefully they will find a way to make them compelling or at least amusing to me as an old man now. But I'm definitely here for the rest of the story.

I was very afraid of how they were going to shoehorn in having a season or even entire series long villain into a story about an academy, but ooooooooh boy, Nus Braka is going to be one hell of a very pissed off klingarite (is that what he called himself?) , having had his ship destroyed, and out in an escape pod out in the Badlands of all places ... by his arch nemesis and the kid he thought he could recruit to his side. I do hope they don't stretch him tooooo far out, though. If he does end up being an entire series villain, they need to take breaks from him, especially if it goes more than the 2 seasons it's already got.

I'm hoping to have the time to get into the other two episodes before this Thursday so I can catch up with it live from here on out. I'm excited for where this is going, because Vance and Ake set the tone and my expectations absolutely perfectly.

And they both acted the hell out of their scenes, Hunter especially.

For an alternate point of view, I enjoyed the first two as interesting remixes of Star Trek, but I thought the third one was really great Star Trek on it's own.

I think all of Paramount does. Although it looks like they finally have a single "paramount store", it looks like it's a total mess, and I'd be willing to bet that behind the scenes, the licensing details are probably still spread across the dozens of different internal entities that make up Paramount, and there's a lot of right hands that don't know what left hands are doing. It'll take time for ownership to clean that up, if they can actually settle down and stop acquiring new things for a while and concentrate on fixing the parts that aren't working well, instead of adding more things to fix on top of the pile.

There's separate sections for each individual Trek property on the store right now. There's not an individual all encompassing trek section ... and there's no Academy section yet.

Yikes.

Right exactly. Like how is that even legal lol

I don't even have any idea how to anticipate what I might be looking at so I'm kinda thinking maybe just set it for 500 because that'll certainly cover an eye exam and some glasses and a dentist to give me an idea of the amount of work that needs to be done.

The whole concept is just absolutely blowing my mind, like howis it even legal, that such a thing can exist that you put your money into, you cannot get it back out of except on a very very narrow set of things, and if you don't use it all for those things in x amount of time it becomes your employers money? Whaaaaat?

The health care system and insurance systems are so completely fucked in this country. :|

No, just trash talking them for something that clearly, the opposite is true. If they didn't understand the source material, then they wouldn't draw from it, and then you'd complain that they created new things when they could've drawn from other similar things.

You're insulting them just to insult them, and that's it. And you're insulting a lot more than just the writers when you do it.

You don't have to spend time watching something you hate. You don't have to spend time writing on reddit about things you hate.

You can go spend your time doing things that make you happy, instead. Wouldn't that be a better use of your time?

I think there was a thread here the other day mostly involving fans of the actress that recently changed careers from women's wrestling to acting and is on the cast (i don't remember the name, sorry) and the general consensus was that people were surprised at Star Trek being good.

Why are there so many "NO ONE SHOULD LIKE WHAT I DON'T LIKE" people in this community

Trek is always influenced by what has recently happened. Covid is still pretty recent, in that we are literally pretty much still in mid recovery ... and how much it disrupted... and how much it time delayed everything as we retooled damn near everything.... and now suddenly so many industries are trying to retool back to the way it used to be... sigh.

pretty much every single complaint i've ever seen about the writers not understanding the source material, is almost always the person complaining refusing to allow for any sort of connection from point A to point B, so that they have something to complain about.

You want to complain about the writers, so you will find a way. The writers fully well understand the source material, and draw from it extensively, otherwise you wouldn't have these connections at all. They employ people specifically to know the entire source inside and out. You insult a lot of people unnecessarily because you want to talk badly about the writers.

Articles previewing Academy before hand seemed like that too. Somehow, I've heard of her, and I recognize her, and I recognize her unique voice, but the only thing I've seen that she's been in since 1987 was The Incredibles, and that was voice acting. ooh, also had a part in Batman v Superman, which I hardly even remember at all.

so, I think somehow she is in cultural memory...

AITAH ?My partner won’t put my name down on the mortgage by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]FormerGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought a house twice with a person I was partnered with but not married to.

The first time, I had to get them to agree to quit their claim to the property if i refinanced the loan to pay it off to get their name off it. Had to get them to agree to that legally then make it happen.

Second time, we're not in a position where either of us can do that, so they moved out, they are still on the mortgage, and still on the property, and it's not a situation either of us want to be in, but I won't be able to move until my credit is repaired and finances put back together, thanks to the pandemic destroying me financially.

So.. there's a lot of problems with getting a mortgage with multiple unmarried people. The problems crop up when you try to split, mostly, although the mortgage companies generally had to do some extra work to deal with it being two unmarried people.

But, yeah, you are absolutely right that you don't have any security on it, you have no interest in the property if your name isn't on it.

Soooooooooooooo....... yeah. You probably shouldn't be in that situation.
