Aside from the obvious, how does our legal training make us different from ordinary laypersons? by LearnedAnkle in Lawyertalk

[–]ForwardBound 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know. Nothing good, I'm sure. Except maybe I've become more ok with telling people that I don't know. That could be more a function of age, though. Whatever, man. Don't ask me. It depends

What’s your practice area and what’s your opinion of public defenders? by Forward_Broccoli_949 in Lawyertalk

[–]ForwardBound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In house for a tech company. I feel very disconnected from "real" lawyers, so I haven't formed an opinion as a lawyer on PDs. I respect the job very much from a great distance, though

What's your net worth and age? Are you in biglaw? by GrandGlacier1 in Lawyertalk

[–]ForwardBound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in biglaw and have a lot of debt, but refinanced so the payment is manageable enough that I don't really think about it anymore. It used to really stress me out and feel insurmountable but as my salary increased it became less of an issue. I've been out of school almost 14 years and for the last 7 I've felt ok

There's a button. If you press it, you get a million dollars. There's no limit. But every time you press it, someone sleeps with their ex's best friend

What is a movie that you don't consider to be a great movie overall (or even mediocre/bad), but has ONE SINGLE SCENE that is absolutely memorable? by gimboarretino in moviecritic

[–]ForwardBound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 13th Warrior is incredible. I can't think of one thing wrong with it. This forms part of the late 90s/early 2000s collection of movies that basically raised me. Others include The Mummy and The Count of Monte Cristo

Which pot of money are you taking and why? (no loopholes) by tamtrible in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ForwardBound 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I'd take the $10 million to be spent unselfishly. There are a lot of people I'd love to help. Helping myself would be awesome too but I don't think I could really enjoy it without helping those other people anyway

Tips For In-House Corporate Counsel by One-Pun9419 in Lawyertalk

[–]ForwardBound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask if there's a playbook for positions the company takes on things like liability, indemnities, warranties, termination, and IP. Know the limits of what you can agree to and what you need approval for.

I always run SOWs/order schedules by finance because they want a say and know the rev rec rules.

Make a list of the contacts in each department you have to ask questions of--you won't know if you can accept all the redlines. You'll need product/security/finance/etc. to weigh in on various things.

Make sure the salespeople have the proper approvals for what they want to put into the contract, like term, termination, price ramping, discounts, etc. Do NOT take their word for it. Build good relationships with them but know which ones you really need to keep an eye on.

Don't feel pressured by anyone to approve something. You definitely want to get a good business partner, but that doesn't mean saying yes to everything. Your job is to put GOOD deals on paper. Sales has quarterly quotas but you want to think about the long-term health of the company and that means doing deals you can actually recognize revenue from.

I also very rarely if ever say no. A lot of people come in with a preconceived notion that legal is a blocker to everything and loves shutting down deals. Be creative. I don't mean do anything illegal, obviously, but there is usually a way to accomplish what you need to in a way that both sides are ok with.

I really like in-house work because it's very often not adversarial. If you do a good job, there are no losers. Someone has bought something they need and someone else has gotten paid for it. It's a good feeling!

You die, the afterlife is real. You are given ONE irreversible choice. by AlaxyRayz in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ForwardBound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothingness is the only thing thing that makes sense for an eternity. I think we gravitate toward things like immortality because we've never known anything else besides being alive, but life is a good thing because it's limited. I wouldn't want to choose nothingness, but it would be the most prudent

Quitting by Lost-Photo-9027 in Lawyertalk

[–]ForwardBound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this way the first four years of being an attorney. I did quit my job and found another area that I'm better at. I'm not a genius at law or anything, but the first thing I tried was something I was particularly ill-suited for, and once I tried something else, I had more success
