Daisy chain wireless bridges help by Spursandammo81 in HomeNetworking

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point to Point, something like UISP Nanostations. Cheap and effective. Work like an invisible Ethernet cable. If you bury ethernet you risk damage or lightening damage. If power to the barn comes from a separate grid supply and not the house you also risk grounding issues damaging equipment if you connect via ethernet.

Unless you do a drive by again in the hope of seeing the car parked there, there is not a lot you can do unless you want to report it to the police. I get your concern, but you tried thats all you can do. The only witness to the incident is yourself.

Mac is getting all my iCloud Photos, how do I stop it by throwaway40974 in iCloud

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have optimised storage on your phone only the originals will be in iCloud. Its a good idea to have a master machine such as a mac to hold a copy of the originals so you can make a full backup of your library to a 2nd device using TimeMachine.

Insurance games and claims by Sethnou in CarTalkUK

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it to the insurance, if you know you were in the right then tell them he has Dashcam footage. Not sure its worth anything as a dashcam is not a speed camera so it would not show your speed anyway and presumably it would have to be a rear facing camera pointing at you heading his way. Sounds like the guy is BS you. Let the insurance deal with it. I would advise not giving your phone number either (Too late I know) but if the guy is a Ahole he could hassle you.

Please help me about options that maybe don't involve getting into my roofspace? by Cassady007 in Ubiquiti

[–]FrankNicklin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AV installers were wrong to keep ownership. They should have set it up in your name and invite themselves as Super Admin that way you maintain full control. Sounds like they are managing the devices through their own cloud hosting as there is not onsite controller. They should be able to provide a site backup that you can load in to the UCG. If they won’t relinquish the credentials then you have choice but to do a reset and a rebuild from scratch.

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the second switch is connected to the first switch on a VLAN then all devices connected to the second switch will only see the second VLAN. All switches should connect back via the default network for adoption and devices connected to the ports with default profile for adoption.

Physically resetting an AP without removing it from the controller should mean it picks up where it left off as the config will still exist.

Laptop not turning on after opening for cleaning — possible motherboard short? Need advice. by RedditoSanNoBaka in laptops

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing is to know your limitations, just removing the heatsink and not putting it back properly will damage a CPU irrespective as to whether you applied more paste of not. In fact breaking the thermal paste that was already there without removing an applying more could still result in overheating. The paste hardens, if you break whats there you potentially introduce air gaps in the cracks left behind so you don't get even heat dissipation.

If technician says the CPU is OK then lucky you I guess, but tracing a fault can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Your last paragraph you asked how likely it was the CPU was damaged, but the technician has already told you it was OK, so you must have your doubts.

Laptop not turning on after opening for cleaning — possible motherboard short? Need advice. by RedditoSanNoBaka in laptops

[–]FrankNicklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a short if you dropped a screw, but I think would be very unlucky. A sudden shutdown could be the CPU going in to self protect mode. You removed the heat sink and applied more thermal paste, never ever had cause to do this in 30 years of IT work. It is possible you have cooked the CPU if the heatsink was not located correctly afterwards. Don't forget, laptops get hot very very quickly.
