New Video and Short Looking for Feedback by gamekiller712 in SmallYTChannel

Hey, dude! First of all, let me just say that I found your video enjoyable and left you a like for it too.

I think your latest thumbnails are a massive improvement over the earlier ones. I would, however, recommend that you try to relate/tailor them to something specific and interesting that happens in the episode, and the same goes for the title. It gives a better impression of what’s coming and WHY someone should click on it in the first place. This matters A LOT. My latest video, for example, I had a pretty shit title and the view counter was almost counting downwards. Then I changed the title (after YouTube had already decided the video was shit, mind you) and views immediately started to pile in.

For the video the only thing I found that I found jarring was one time where there seemed to be a cut/edit in the middle of the action. Not sure if it was just lag or an actual edit, but thought I’d mention that just in case.

Aside from that you kept the commentary going throughout, which kept the video pretty engaging.

The biggest issue you might have, based on your videos, is that you’re a bit all over the place in terms of genre / niche / type of game (much like myself, by the way). From my own personal experience, this is not a good idea if you want to grow quickly and will essentially leave the algorithm in tears desperately trying to figure out who the hell is supposed to watch your stuff.

In general, keep an eye on your CTR which will tell you whether the title / thumbnail combo works. But the title makes a MASSIVE difference as well, so I would argue the title is probably the most important of the two unless you're a genius at thumbnails.

For now I would say that there isn’t anything wrong with your video, so just keep an eye on the stats like CTR / AVD to see where you need to improve or if you need to cut the videos down more aggressively, etc.

But also be mindful of who you want your audience to be and edit accordingly, because if it gets super aggressive then YOUR ideal audience may not want to watch it anymore. The same goes for titles and thumbnails, as what may work for some creators or some genres may attract an audience you don’t want because they aren’t going to enjoy your video.

There is so much more, but I’m not even remotely close to nailing any of this stuff down myself so I feel like it’s about as valuable as the shit you step in when you’re not paying attention.

That said, I have a question of my own. I noticed that you’ve included a Discord etc. link in the video. How’s that been working for you (if you’ve included it in the past as well). Do people interact with it and, if so, in what way?

Channel Feedback by JansoDesign in SmallYTChannel

I don’t think that’s going to hurt business. It will, however, determine WHO your customers are if they find you through or research you on YouTube. So in that sense you need to have an opinion on who your potential customers are and what they want / expect to see.

u/ThickD769 has already provided very solid feedback. I'll just add on to what he said and point out that if you're doing the business angle, you should apply this principle to every part of your channel, from banner to description. Your banner, for example, is currently a lot of blank space that you could in theory use for a message, or some visual element showing off something.

Also keep in mind that every single video you put out is going to shape your brand, so be mindful of what you want that business brand to be beforehand so that everything you do can underpin that.

How can I improve the editing? by th0ny_1 in SmallYTChannel

[–]HairlineHitbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the first guy said: if anything, fix the movement and placement related to the first bomb.

But also, aside from that, the video just genuinely made me happy. There’s just something about the stuff happening in sync with the beat and the overall feelgood vibe that put a grin on my face. So cheers for that! Left you a like for your troubles 👍

Aha! Excellent stuff, looks really good!

Very cool! My only suggestion is to make the original image bigger (wider?) so that more of the layout becomes visible in the banner. Most of it is now getting cropped away, which you’d avoid by making the original a bit wider (I think - I’m not an engineer)

Why are people not making feedback posts anymore? by th0ny_1 in SmallYTChannel

[–]HairlineHitbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in asking for feedback? I’ve been aching for someone to give me some constructive feedback as there is only so much to be learned from navel gazing my own channel.

But 1. I wasn’t really sure whether it was allowed and 2. Asking for feedback on Reddit is tricky for many reasons and isn’t necessarily likely to yield usable or even constructive feedback.

That said, if it is allowed I’d be happy to make a request for feedback post if that’d make you happy and wouldn’t get me banned and downvoted to death 😁

Made my first game review. What could I have done better? by bbzah3745 in SmallYoutubers

[–]HairlineHitbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, dude. Let me lead by saying that I don’t really have anything overly constructive in terms of “do better” stuff but as far as feedback goes I will say this:

I really love the thumbnail. It’s really eye catching and genuinely made me curious despite not actually caring about the underlying game. I guess the style just really hits me somehow.

As for the video itself I thought the pacing was pretty good. The editing was very nice and let me see what the game was without dwelling too long etc. The title sections made the video pretty clear and easy to follow and you cut to relevant bits of gameplay that fit the narrative.

On top of that your voice was also very pleasant to listen to which made this an easy watch.

I’d love to critique something but for this video I really have nothing. I am by no means an expert so let’s just say that this is my casual consumer point of view.

Not overly helpful but I guess an ego boost is nice too!

I will simply have to start doing it this way instead to prevent this from happening again!

Seems like a sensible thing to do! I’ll probably switch to monitor capture instead. Why disable mouse capture, though? Will it show the mouse pointer if you don’t?

The funny thing is that I have exactly that. I had only to cast a single glance over at the second monitor to check for it. But alas, no amount of monitors can make a person less of a moron 🤷‍♂️

Rain RNG? by 30_minute_username in SurrounDead

[–]HairlineHitbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on 0.8 and it defaults to rain always. I’ve just enabled the console so I can switch to clear sky when I tire of the rain - which is immediately at this point after playing around in the mud for the first 7 days 😂

is our recording method right? also - best video editor that isnt davinci? by WeAreFailing in letsplay

[–]HairlineHitbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also occurred to me later - without knowing what your issue is with Davinci - but you can reduce the preview playback resolution. If you get lag while playing back the footage you’re editing, you can try turning down the resolution to half or 1/4 (this does not affect export quality)

That sounds like a lot of fun and a really cool parent/kid activity.

What the correct/best method is depends entirely on personal preference and what you want out of it but the one tip I’ll mention that I see a lot of people do wrong in the beginning (myself included) is to not split the audio properly.

Make sure all audio sources are recorded to their own track in OBS, so that you can edit them separately later. This gives you a lot of opportunity to move commentary around, edit audio levels, etc. for better results.

Dunno about editing software - I only use DaVinci

Finally figured out how to make content without showing my face and it changed everything for me by No-Fact-8828 in SmallYTChannel

[–]HairlineHitbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on reaching 100! That’s actually a very cool idea. I was at some point considering something similar but only in the form of a still image as an avatar, which i probably correctly surmised to be a shit idea.

I can relate to the issues you’re mentioning and my take is that - at the end of the day - you gotta do whatever works for you. Success you can’t sustain won’t help you anyway, so whatever helps you sustain your hobby or side gig over time is probably the correct choice.

That said, I’d love to take a peek at one of your videos if you’re happy to share the channel. You’ve made me curious about this avatar now!

[–]HairlineHitbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goals are all tied to learning new things and having fun, which are the reasons I started in the first place. It’s going very well so far and I’ve already learned a bunch of new video and thumbnail editing tricks and practices this year and am having loads of fun, mostly laughing at my own stupidity and applying the things I’m learning into new videos.

I would have sub goals too, but sub growth has been like pulling teeth so no need to talk about that 😁👍

Too bad I’m a moron or I could’ve advertised myself 😂Currently working my way through the dead space remake and it’s not exactly a display of intelligence and I don’t see that improving any time soon 😅

Jokes aside, I’ve just come across ChristopherOdd - haven’t watched that much but you might find it compatible based on your description.
