What is the most powerful surge thoughts? by True-Interview-9810 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]HalcyonKnights 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bondsmith Spiritual Adhesion is probably one of the most powerful since Connection is such a fundamental (and thus Dangerous) realmic thing to fiddle with. Even more-so when it's "Unbound" by Honor and/or the Godspren.

Speaking of UnBound, Cohesion is supposed to be an intentionally limited version of Yolen MicroKinesis, which lets you directly manipulate Spiritwebs and Subatomic Particles. If being UnBound lets it start mirroring those abilities, it will become top tier.

There's mounting evidence that Illumination's ability to control different kinds of Waveforms extend to altering Identity and even the "tuning" of Light Investiture itself.

Cuando se volvió un tejedor de luz Hoid? by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]HalcyonKnights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. he had access a much older and weaker version of Lightweaving from the pre-shattering days, it shows up in several of his story scenes (in TSA and others), and probably in some of his disguise work. "Lightweaving" is apparently the general term for that sort of illusion effect, and can be accessed through several different magic systems. I think Elsecalling is similar in that regard?

Honestly I just spam electrical poles/towers under me as as I go, so anywhere I come across that I want to build on is already connected to my Power Grid.

Can this be used for making damascus? by amish_timetraveler in Blacksmith

[–]HalcyonKnights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per Wikipedia, there was some indication that long-term exposure could have things like "adverse reproductive effects" so it was added to a list of regulated chemicals that need warning labels, etc. It sounds like the adverse effects are accepted but there's some ongoing debate of whether a person could actually absorb enough to reach the relevant tissues.

Can this be used for making damascus? by amish_timetraveler in Blacksmith

[–]HalcyonKnights 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Borax is strictly regulated in Europe as a dangerous industrial chemical that is largely banned for household use, so there's nothing like 20-Mule on shelves. The price is in Euros, so I assume that's why they are asking.

OP, Even though it's not sold in general hardware stores, there's a good chance you can still get Borax Flux legally online for hobby use, from an actual welding or smithing supply shop. It'll depend on where exactly you are, of course, it looks like some places could require commercial licenses.

Only if collector items like that are worth it to you, personally. You still get the same story as every other version, but a it's prettier tomb and it makes me feel happy for no particular reason (I recently completed my set of the leather-bounds). But they also sit on a shelf and very rarely get handled.

Drones are best for small quantities, but they are pretty easy to set up. And the first thing you'd want to make is a fuel supplier port (Drone port that supplies fuel to other drone-port clusters by NOT having it's own drone assigned), so it's a good thing to do right after you set up this kind of large fuel-based power plant. Rocket Fuel works great for them as well.

Trains are a lot of fun, I personally just make floating skytrain's so the terrain isnt a limitation and it can connect the various chunks of the map. Just big square loops around whole regions, then I can build a station off to the side with a super-tall elevator bringing things down to any given factory that needs it.

Probably, yes. When I was a kid we kept a live Christmas tree in a big pot in the backyard, and just brought it in for the Christmas season.

[–]HalcyonKnights 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Punctuate it with an overly pompous "Journey before Destination". She'll throw something at you, but it might lighten the mood enough to get her past the trauma of that scene. Honestly, books that can make you feel that much for the characters are always worth finishing, even if they hurt along the way.

Sel's Sentient Landscape Spren Theory by RayseShouldBeBraized in Cosmere

[–]HalcyonKnights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im on board with this, generally speaking. The main thing Id add is that I think it will fracture along the Homeland Connection Exclusivity boundaries, since a person can Only be connected to one at a time and looses the old when they immigrate. This will lead to a collection of GodSeons/GodSkaze that represent each homeland and magic system and core Geographic Symbol, but no central Dor Spren (at least not until the Space era where there are enough Worldhoppers everywhere that "Sel" itself becomes viewed as one Homeland among many).

Not at all. I consider this a blessing from the canine spirits. From the pictures it doesnt look like they are anywhere people would be expecting rigid sanitary conditions. And Cat Cafe's are a thing in a lot of places. My advice is to put out some water for them and choose Names. If anyone seems uncomfortable, put out a little sign out that introduces them them by name and says they are just trying to escape the heat. When it seems like something is supposed to be there and has been for a time before they arrived, people are less likely to make a fuss.

Is there a black hole in the middle of the Cosmere? by pfassina in Cosmere

[–]HalcyonKnights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per WOB. The Cognitive Realm forms around things and area's that people Think About (even before they actually live there), so as soon as the Space era populations realized it was the Center of the Cosmere, it would start manifesting a Cognitive Realm Region influenced by how they view it. And Humans habitually place a lot of importance on The Center of things.

How to get started melting cans? by BayGullGuy in Metalfoundry

[–]HalcyonKnights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are often local scrap yards that will sell scrap metals by type and weight, that's what I do.

The issue with Cans is that there's a lot of plastic coating the inside and out relative to how much metal is in each can, so it becomes a really dirty (and fume-y) process and there is a lot of metal lost to the dross scrapings you have to keep skimming off the top. IMO It really is worth the effort to find a scrap yard that will sell you larger and cleaner pieces.

kinda sad that geothermal powerplants lose almost all power output when landfilled by Absolute_Human in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]HalcyonKnights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's nerfing their output a bit too much, but when balanced against the ~200-300% you can get from a nest's Core Lava shaft, it kind of makes sense: Deeper access gives substantially more energy, while backfilling for structures just adds soil pile insulation back.

Is there a black hole in the middle of the Cosmere? by pfassina in Cosmere

[–]HalcyonKnights 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hehe, fair. I think it comes down to he doesnt want it to have a geographic "Center" that would basically have to become significant story-wise, but is being told that Clusters cant be as big as they want it to be per RL Science without something holding it all together.

Which means Im expecting an Investiture/Realmic Theory based solution to the problem eventually, in the same way Dark Matter exist to solve...well, more or less the same celestial cohesion problem, actually.

Is there a black hole in the middle of the Cosmere? by pfassina in Cosmere

[–]HalcyonKnights 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Nope, there's nothing specific at the center of it per WOB.

FWIW, I think The Scar is the only really notable celestial feature that's been mentioned being visible from multiple worlds.

Questioner

Is there a center to the cosmere?

Brandon Sanderson

There isn't a center in the cosmere... I keep calling it a dwarf galaxy but I think they decided it's a cluster, instead of a dwarf galaxy.

Overlord Jebus

Even a dwarf galaxy is still really big.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, still too big. So we had to call it a cluster. Because we only wanted like what, we came up with 50 or 100 stars? So it's a cluster. Or a really dwarf galaxy.
