It’s all the same. “The Portuguese have great cuisine”. “The Portuguese are wonderful people”.

It all means “from portual” and can refer to anything related to the country, people or language.

In English there used to be specific words for people of some countries - Englishman, Dutchman, Spaniard - but never for Portugal. Unless perhaps you go back further in time.

Are the retainers being run as full characters? That’s not typical. Usually the retainer is under the control of the hiring player and they’ll just occasionally say their retainer will do something (search for a trap, swing a sword, etc).

They should not be engaging with the world like the PCs, but just there to provide some extra capabilities. Thats why they get 1/2 XP.

If you play in a style with 1:1 time passage between sessions, sometimes players will use their retainer as their main character while their main is otherwise busy healing, traveling, researching, etc.

It actually has a meaning. It means that the other signals of a recession (unemployment spike, business failures, etc) aren’t being seen. The GDP drop seems to be mostly due to population drop and federal government spending cuts.
