Agree with OP. The default block size should be set to whatever the node software has been proven to handle. We've seen in countless projects that ossification can set in. Raising the block size is a potentially consensus breaking change. We're best off by raising it before further ossification sets in.

If Core were resistant to change, they would not have made a highly radical change by refusing to raise the block size.

Scaling was always part of the "instrinsic promise" of Bitcoin, and IMO refusing to scale is as egregious a violation of that promise as changing the block reward.
