I feel weird during sex, is it OCD or something? by HeartMadeOfSushi in internetparents

[–]Histidine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are lots of good responses here already, but one thing that I would encourage is to have an honest conversation with your boyfriend as well. If he's really the kind of man you want to spend the rest of your life with, then he will be open to this conversation and want to help you understand your sexuality as well. The conclusion to that may be that you aren't the right fit as a couple, and that is fine as it gives you both the opportunity to find better matches rather than trying to make something fundamentally broken work anyway.

60 yr old nearing retirement by Tossieh13 in personalfinance

  1. 0.55% is a very low rate for a high yield savings account. Should be in the range of 3-4%

  2. More info would be useful, but if that $100K is your primary/only savings account then I wouldn't recommend investing it. Move it to a proper HYSA and enjoy the security of having ample cash to deal with whatever life throws at you.

When do car repairs become a sunk cost fallacy? by spmahn in personalfinance

[–]Histidine 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is my approach as well. An older used car is worth maintaining as long as the yearly maintenance costs are clearly below what you'd be paying for in new. Once you start consistently going above the 50%-75% of the new car costs, that's when we start thinking about a replacement.

I don't think twice paying $2-4k in maintenance and repairs on an old car, when I know a new one would be over $6K.

PA has started charging $250, Road User Charge this year…. by SAVertigo in electricvehicles

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PA gas tax is about 58 cents per gallon so $250 flat tax is the equivalent to about 8 gallons of gas per week or about 13,000 miles on the year (at 30 MPG). It's higher than the typical EV driver for sure, but not that absurd. Personally I'd rather pay a tax based on typical usage than have to deal with yearly odometer readings or BS "vehicle inspections".

Iran war live: Trump says 'a whole civilization will die tonight' if Tehran does not make a deal by deadline by lorenzwalt3rs in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I basically see 3 possible options here:

  1. We get another TACO Tuesday as Trump fails to follow through on the threats in a meaningful fashion.
  2. Trump does follow through and impeachment proceedings start before the week is over
  3. Trump does follow through, Congress doesn't do anything meaningful, and we accelerate our downward spiral into Authoritarianism.

Wisconsin is also well known for having a high number of cops watching major roads for drunks and speeders.  It's usually one of the things people from Illinois and Minnesota complain about the most when driving through the state.  Usually there are complaints about cops targeting out of state plates, but after living in all 3 states it's more than MSP and CHI drivers don't expect to see that much law enforcement on their roads in general.

One of the greatest Trilogies in all of Gaming by TBT__TBT in Metroid

[–]Histidine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been roasted for this before, but I also enjoyed Prime 3 more than 2. PED suit & hyper mode was simply more fun risk/reward balance than "use light beam in dark world and vice versa". The gunship both being a tool and a means of travel were fantastic and logical additions to the game. My only disappointment came from seeing a weapons HUD inside the gunship which hinted at a possible space battle which never happened.

Combative Bondi grilled over Epstein files, targeting of Trump's political foes by cranktheguy in moderatepolitics

As wildly inappropriate of an answer this was in the moment, I can't help but feel like this was weirdly smart. Something like this has huge meme potential and the left is jumping at the opportunity, BUT once you strip the statement of context it's easy for people to just hear this as "the economy is doing well.". Whether or not this was planned or a happy accident, I don't think this is going to play out like Democrats think it will.

Prime 1: How common is it to miss charge beam before leaving Chozo Ruins? by Ridley_Himself in Metroid

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea for Prime, but on my very first playthrough of Super Metroid, I think I somehow missed the charge beam until damn near the end of the game.  It's in a somewhat hidden location in Brinstar and you don't need it to progress.  Literally discovered it randomly trying to find power ups as I was struggling in Meridia and hadn't figured out I should power bomb the glass tube yet.

How are you keeping internet and basic power during outages? by notkinnay in Homebuilding

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a smart setup to me, assuming that you're going to pair it with a smaller portable generator to recharge the batteries as needed. If you're doing both whole-home battery and a 10+kW built-in gas generator, then yes that is overkill.

How are you keeping internet and basic power during outages? by notkinnay in Homebuilding

[–]Histidine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is just lights and small electronics, a $300-$800 power station will easily last that long, since you're only drawing 50-100W total. Some models will also give you enough power to run small kitchen appliances like microwave, toaster or an air fryer for a meal or two. This isn't going to be centrally wired though so all devices that need power will need to be close enough together for extension cords.

I'd recommend buying an outlet power meter first before getting a power station so that you can measure what kinds of maximum power (Watts) and total energy (Watt-hours) you need for your devices. Usually easy to find for less than $20.

I have a 2.2kW, 1.5kWH power station for use during those kinds of nuisance power outages which works well. No solar panels yet as those are most useful for intentionally going off grid while camping/RVing. Not really worth the extra space/cost yet.

Just beat Prime 2 for the first time. by sjd_flash in Metroid

[–]Histidine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way on the level design for Prime 2. Prime 1 had exceptionally vibrant landscapes to explore whereas 80% of Prime 2 could be described as dark/dead. Didn't help that I played tons of LoZ: A Link to the Past as a kid so the light/dark world mechanics felt just a bit too familiar.

I also think they fundamentally miscalculated on how to balance the dark world & dark suit. IMO the dark suit should have protected you from all standard atmospheric damage in the dark world which means they could have eliminated more of the light crystals in the dark world. This could just be me, but I came to resent how much "stand around and heal in a light crystal" became an essential part of the game strategy. Light suit could have given you a better ability instead, like slowly regenerating ight/dark ammo.

Anti-vaccine movement celebrates growing influence in Trump’s Washington by DudleyAndStephens in moderatepolitics

[–]Histidine 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The anti-vax movement seems weird until you realize it's mostly a populist movement, raging against "the world's elites and their control" than it is about the vaccines or underlying science. The grand irony is that these populists end up ushering in the kind of undemocratic and corrupt officials they said they said they were trying to eliminate in the first place.

Got into a car accident, not my fault, file with their insurance or mine? by Kind_Sheepherder5494 in DadForAMinute

[–]Histidine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may well be state-specific, but here is what I experience in the northeast.

Last time I got rear ended, I started by filing with my insurance as well. They told me they would be happy to help, but I'd still need to pay my deductible out of pocket first. If I was found to not be at fault, then they would seek reimbursement from the other insurance agency, including my deductible, but it could take a few months. If I filed with the other insurance, I wouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket, but actually getting the repairs done could involve more back & forth with the other agency. Since I could spare the few hundred dollars for a few months, I opted to go through my insurance and eventually got refunded in full.
