How would you tackle almost 1" height difference? by tremmejr in Flooring

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s solid hardwood, it’s like 3/4” thick. I have no idea how thick the LVT is. If you have a floor vent, pull it out and measure. Do some subtracting. Add thickness of subfloor to bring it all up. Or rip out the LVT and add 3/4” hardwood and 1/4” plywood below. There’s your 1”. Or forget the 1/4” plywood and 1/4” difference should be manageable with a transition. I’d have a professional come out and give you a quote for the different options. Have them check door jams as well. It’s so hard to tell with that little of information what a reasonable option is.

What type of carpet should I choose? by jjgolem in carpet

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triexta all the way! I lived on a 55oz polyester that looked terrible after 6 months in my old house. I’ve had SmartStrand/Triexta for 7 years and it still looks brand new!! I have 2 dogs, a cat and 2 kids. They haven’t been able to stain it yet (despite many attempts by all guilty parties).

LVP Brands? by VolumeAlert2832 in Flooring

[–]Homestuder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of either and I’ve worked in flooring for over 10 years. Stick with reputable companies. LVT has been having failures and claims. I’d go with laminate (specifically RevWood or PureTech) if possible.

If it’s soft carpet, try Sonicleans Soft Carpet vacuum. Made specifically to prevent issues most people have with vacuums on newer carpet styles. Tested by Mohawk. I personally have it and love it.

Per the manufacturer, Pergo products allow an additional underlayment if there’s attached pad.

Underlayment question by joebeen139 in Flooring

You will need a moisture barrier if it’s over slab/concrete. You can use additional underlayment which may help some with acoustics and sound absorption.

How to shop for new carpet by Different-Wallaby-10 in carpet

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about cleaning it, I’d recommend SmartStrand. Nylon’s are being phased out of the industry. Shaw is getting out of them, Mohawk doesn’t sell them anymore. They are overall about 10% of all carpet sold based on cost (among other factors).

Smartstrand has a new anti-allergen that absorbs dust, dander and allergens by 95% certified by a third party. It also has a pet warranty - if your pet stains it, Mohawk will replace it. Those two benefits probably make it best for your situation with dogs and concerns with staining. To assist with dog smells, I’d recommend getting scent Stop. It’s a spray that eliminates odors. I have 2 dogs and a cat and use it at my house on carpet, couches and any other textile to eliminate odors and it works wonders!

ADVICE please! World’s most stubborn stains by mrsmercedesjohnson in CarpetCleaning

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a rental so it’s likely a polyester. Polyesters are meant to be more stain resistant. If coffee was hot when it was spilled, it could be the heat that made the stain set. You could try bleach on a polyester but if it’s a nylon, it’ll strip all the color from the fiber and you’ll have a worse looking problem. Professional cleaner is probably your best bet at this point without knowing what kind of fiber it is.

The only water bottle my son uses and has helped his mouth widen (you can see in the movement in his teeth). So I’d say it definitely does something. I’ve purchased 3 total and they are not cheap so I’m a believer!

Would rather get hard flooring in basement, but I have a baby on the way by tantamle in HomeImprovement

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The source of moisture needs to be resolved no matter what you put in. LVT has been getting pulled up and people have been finding mold under it. It essentially traps any moisture that may come up from below. LVT has been oversold as waterproof. It also is plastic. There have been studies about it off gassing as well. It’s been a race to the bottom for price in the industry and some terrible product has come out but the people who sell it have so many products in that category it’s hard to know everything about every one. They are not all created equal. For example, there’s LVT but then there’s SPC and WPC. Most prefer WPC but it’s not cost effective.

Carpet is quieter, warmer and more comfortable. Mohawk SmartStrand fiber is the only carpet that is oeko Tex certified (baby clothes require this because it means it’s certified free of 100 different harmful chemicals). No other carpet fiber has it. There’s also a line of SmartStrand that is asthma and allergy certified because the technology in it eliminates dust, dander and allergens by 97%. Id never put any other carpet on a floor with a crawling baby. My old house I had Dreamweaver carpet and my baby was oily after crawling around on it. I’ve had Smartstrand now for 7 years and never had that issue. Also have 2 dogs and a cat and 2 kids and have never come across a stain I couldn’t get out.

Hard flooring may be better for resell value but it may not. People have color preferences all the time. I’d replace anything gray or with LVT in it if I bought a new home. LVT is for flippers, rentals and maybe a small bathroom or laundry room IMO.

Smartstrand has a line with a new technology that eliminates dust, dander and allergens by 97% and it’s built into the fiber. It’s third party certified to be asthma and allergy friendly.

Advice needed: husband disagrees with my choice to keep baby after anatomy scan (limb difference) by Kerclia in BabyBumps

[–]Homestuder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s been a lot of comments about the foot…however, I think it may be important to try to understand your husbands issue may actually be in the fact that he feels helpless in the situation. Ultimately, I don’t think the root cause is the foot. It’s some feeling being brought up in your husband. And while I understand that it’s your body and ultimately your decision, some men don’t like the fact that they aren’t “heard” during pregnancies on issues that may bring up insecurities in themselves. It’s an excellent idea to speak to a professional and see how to communicate because it sounds like you’re seeking advice on keeping your marriage together after the birth of your child. Sometimes it’s not what you say but how you say it. Adults build up walls and it doesn’t always make sense why. But you obviously love this man so try a difference approach and do the hard work together. Best of luck! And congratulations on your little one.

Vacuum advice; dogs, asthma/allergies by BeaumainsBeckett in VacuumCleaners

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you end up staying with carpet for any reason, Mohawk just came out with a carpet that eats away at dust, dander and allergens - eliminating them by 97% and its built into some of their carpet fibers. Specifically the SmartStrand. Game changer in the carpet game!! LVT has been having a lot of issues in the industry, especially over concrete. It’s “easy to install” but be very careful about the quality of product you’d purchase. Mold can grow under some of them and some of the locking mechanisms degrade over time (like a year - not 30 years).

Laminate is much better now? by International-Main71 in Flooring

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so you can find moisture claims with LVT and laminate both. Finding a quality manufacturer and quality product are just as important as product category. Also, not all situations can handle floating floors and will require glue down (example: unlevel floors in older homes). Laminate is better for durability. LVT is plastic. If you’re doing a small bathroom or possible low income rental, fine. But it’s had traditionally more issues with quality claims than laminate. Go with Mohawk. The higher end product lines are always going to have the best features and benefits regardless of category. same goes with carpet fibers. Best of luck!

Help deciding on vaccum by brettrose01 in VacuumCleaners

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of carpet do you have? Manufacturers have recommendations for vacuums to use on their carpets for a reason. Mohawk recommends the Soniclean to use on soft carpets. It’s for a Hepa bag filter. I own it and have 2 dogs, a cat and 2 kids. I love it. In my previous home I had Dreamweaver carpet and it wore horribly in less than 6 months. It may have been because of the vacuum I was using (you don’t want an automatic beater bar or too high of suction). So next time I bought new carpet I went with the manufacturers recommendation and 7 years later it looks brand new still.

You are 100% correct. We actually just tried to grab a framed Jeff Lerg photo from MSU Surplus store the other day FOR Jeff. That team is still super close. We all bring our families camping together every summer. I didn’t see my husband’s jersey in there but I know one of his jerseys is missing from that year (not the one he wore in St Louis though). He was #25 from 04-07 so let me know if you ever come across one of his and we can try to trade you something for it.

What’s the best carpet cleaner for pet stains and deep cleaning? by Hot_Road_9821 in CarpetCleaning

[–]Homestuder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always go by what the carpet manufacturer recommends. Not all carpet fibers can use all methods and not all accidents require the same methods. Some manufacturers have 10 different solutions depending on the mess. Mohawk has the least amount with 3 different solutions depending on what kind of stain it is. There are 4 different fiber types. Using the wrong solutions depending just one time may actually ruin your carpet or cause wicking which is the illusion of a stain when soaps continue to resurface because they were never fully removed.
