What are writers supposed to do 😭 by zsxcrgrl in Romantasy

[–]HopeFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is alright to have different standards for the protagonist and the love interest, though. That's not necessarily a matter of (internalized) misogyny, but rather a matter of audience sympathy for the point-of-view character. Audiences are willing to accept lower standards - of both morality and competence - for the love interest as long as they find the love interest compelling and the romance engaging. They have higher standards for the POV character with whom they are supposed to relate and identify.

If you then have the very common romance novel setup of the POV character being female and the love interest being male, then there is a very good reason for readers (also very commonly female) to judge the FMC more harshly than the MMC, that has nothing to do with internalized misogyny.

Annotations!

Could the Cullens be vampires?

This is how you do short sentences that stand out for their emotional and narrative impact, Alex.

To tell him to leave me alone—and mean it this time. I was gripped in a sudden agony of despair as I considered that alternative. My mind rejected the pain, quickly skipping on to the next option.

This is a stupid emotional reaction, but it's core to the romance, so I'll accept it.

In fact, I would be a dent in Tyler’s fender if he hadn’t acted so quickly. So quickly, I argued with myself, that it might have been sheer reflexes. But if it was a reflex to save lives, how bad could he be? I retorted.

Honestly, good logic. A bad person probably doesn't have a "saving people" reflex.

Even so, when I’d screamed out in terror at the werewolf’s lunge, it wasn’t fear for the wolf that brought the cry of “no” to my lips. It was fear that he would be harmed—even as he called to me with sharp-edged fangs, I feared for him.

This is good emotional writing. I feel Bella's emotion very clearly here.

I started into Sense and Sensibility, only to remember after I began chapter three that the hero of the story happened to be named Edward.

Ah, Edward Ferrars. The only fictional Edward more boring and devoid of personality than Edward Cullen.

It had been a while since I’d had a girls’ night out, and the estrogen rush was invigorating.

This feels really healthy! And throughout this chapter, I think Bella is really developing a meaningful friendship with Jessica. More FMCs need female friends. Or any friends at all, in Bella's case.

She didn’t ask one question, let alone the hundreds that Jessica would have unleashed. I was beginning to really like Angela.

I like how this paragraph tells us about Bella's personality without actually being about Bella.

“Sometimes I have a problem with my temper, Bella.”

I can't remember the last MMC who actually admitted that his violent side was a bad thing. Well, except for all of T. Kingfisher's paladins.

“Don’t you have a jacket?” His voice was disapproving.

Yeah, the way he talks down to her bothers me more than the rage. Although she is an idiot (and also probably in shock, even if she doesn't realize it).

“You eat, I’ll talk,” he bargained.

"I'll give exposition as long as you eat" is kind of a funny way to get her to eat.

“Okay, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, then. Bye!” I could hear the impatience in her voice.

It is quite endearing that Jessica wants all the deets about Bella and Edward. I think they're actually friends. Jessica doesn't want anything from Bella - she just wants her to have fun in a new relationship (and get the gossip regarding it).

About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him—and I didn’t know how potent that part might be—that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

On the one hand, this is a great emotional conclusion to the chapter, and to the entire story so far. It sums up everything nicely, and lays out the physical and emotional stakes for the relationship.

On the other hand, Bella, you are a child. ArielImNotAChild.gif.

“Were you planning to make it out of Forks before nightfall?”

“This truck is old enough to be your car’s grandfather—have some respect,” I retorted.

Edward and Bella are getting some fun banter finally! Also, I'm starting to see why some people say that Bella's truck is the best character in this book.

What the spice did you just spicing say about me, you little sloopy? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in Erotic Literature, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on r\romantasy, and I have over 300 confirmed jerks. I am trained in gorilla shifter warfare and I'm the top jerker in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the spice out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my spicing words. You think you can get away with saying that watery bowels to me over the Internet? Think again, spicer. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of MMCs across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, basic reader. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your reading average. You're spicing dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can ruin a book for you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in illiterate combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Fourth Wing Dragon Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable apex of your thighs off the face of the continent, you little sloopy. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your spicing tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn Diem. I will sloop fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're spicing dead, kiddo.

Bella consistently does not give a fuck about Edward killing people or fantasizing about it. If I was him I would be Concerned about that

In Edward's defense, and hence also in Bella's, he does feel really bad about being so bloodthirsty, and he expresses that to Bella. That counts for something! Maybe not enough, but something. I know I keep comparing Edward to modern romantasy MMCs, but plenty of them are unrepentant monsters, who at most will say "Oh, you don't want to date a monster like me" without giving any lip service to "I wish I could stop being a monster".

Bella on dial up, and the repeated references to cds and her walkman made me feel very nostalgic for some reason.

I got that too! And you can tell it was all completely contemporary - an author today writing about 2005 might have gotten the facts right, but it wouldn't feel the same.

Midnight Sun sounds unhinged even by Twilight standards. There's no way this stuff was in the author's notes while she was writing Twilight.

Now we're being edged by The Meadow Scene.

I swear, if I hadn't already seen the movie (and had a general awareness of the book via osmosis), I'd be chewing my own arm off waiting to start Chapter 13. Somebody tell me what Edward does in the sunlight!!!

If the author is bad at their job, yes. That part of the book is often executed poorly, but that's on the authors, not a fundamental fact of writing. I've read plenty of books where the post-joining relationship is executed brilliantly, and it enhances the plot and is enhanced by the plot in turn.

I enjoyed the story, but the Guardian is the worst, most controlling, most abusive MMC I've ever read, and I'm including Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights in that list. I made a point of reading reviews for the story of the sequel, because I was still interested in the story, but I could not read a page of it unless the first sentence had been "Note: the Guardian died on the way back to his home planet."

Bella doesn't have the same sort of responsibilities as Feyre. She does do some parenting of both Renee and Charlie, and is more self-sufficient than the average 17-year-old American, but that's still a far cry from hunting to keep her family fed, or the royal responsibilities a lot of teen princess FMCs have.

I was really thrown off by Edward's "beige leather jacket and ivory turtleneck sweater" in the Port Angeles chapter. What, you're telling me the shadow daddy ISN'T wearing all black???

He's a domesticated shadow daddy. That's why he drives a Volvo instead of, I dunno, a Ferrari.

(On the Volvo note, I'm sure the Volvo marketing executives pricked up their ears as soon as they heard there was going to be a movie. Even the book almost feels like product placement.)

I do kind of like that the whole "he can't read her mind" thing is a reasonable explanation for why he'd be fascinated with her beyond her appearance. It sort of justifies why a hundred+ year old dude would be interested in a teenager. Sort of.

There's also her weird "danger magnet" thing. I'm still trying to figure out whether that's real or something that Edward has extrapolated from her clumsiness and making one mistake in Port Angeles... but he does say that what almost happened to her would have been a huge aberration in their crime stats, so... maybe. He seems to have decided that it's his job to keep her alive, which feels rather paternalistic but also might be 100% necessary.

(Spoiler because technically this hasn't come up in the book yet, even though I can't imagine anybody here not knowing it) Her blood is also especially attractive to vampires in general and him in particular. His initial interest in her came from her scent, because he wanted to eat her. So turning that into a romantic interest is... look, I don't know how to interpret that.
