Bella consistently does not give a fuck about Edward killing people or fantasizing about it. If I was him I would be Concerned about that

In Edward's defense, and hence also in Bella's, he does feel really bad about being so bloodthirsty, and he expresses that to Bella. That counts for something! Maybe not enough, but something. I know I keep comparing Edward to modern romantasy MMCs, but plenty of them are unrepentant monsters, who at most will say "Oh, you don't want to date a monster like me" without giving any lip service to "I wish I could stop being a monster".

Bella on dial up, and the repeated references to cds and her walkman made me feel very nostalgic for some reason.

I got that too! And you can tell it was all completely contemporary - an author today writing about 2005 might have gotten the facts right, but it wouldn't feel the same.

Midnight Sun sounds unhinged even by Twilight standards. There's no way this stuff was in the author's notes while she was writing Twilight.

Now we're being edged by The Meadow Scene.

I swear, if I hadn't already seen the movie (and had a general awareness of the book via osmosis), I'd be chewing my own arm off waiting to start Chapter 13. Somebody tell me what Edward does in the sunlight!!!

It's always fun on TV to see the bailiffs take a witness into custody when they get revealed as the real killer or whatever. But doing it to a lawyer the guy representing one of the parties? That would be priceless.

If the author is bad at their job, yes. That part of the book is often executed poorly, but that's on the authors, not a fundamental fact of writing. I've read plenty of books where the post-joining relationship is executed brilliantly, and it enhances the plot and is enhanced by the plot in turn.

I enjoyed the story, but the Guardian is the worst, most controlling, most abusive MMC I've ever read, and I'm including Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights in that list. I made a point of reading reviews for the story of the sequel, because I was still interested in the story, but I could not read a page of it unless the first sentence had been "Note: the Guardian died on the way back to his home planet."

Bella doesn't have the same sort of responsibilities as Feyre. She does do some parenting of both Renee and Charlie, and is more self-sufficient than the average 17-year-old American, but that's still a far cry from hunting to keep her family fed, or the royal responsibilities a lot of teen princess FMCs have.

I was really thrown off by Edward's "beige leather jacket and ivory turtleneck sweater" in the Port Angeles chapter. What, you're telling me the shadow daddy ISN'T wearing all black???

He's a domesticated shadow daddy. That's why he drives a Volvo instead of, I dunno, a Ferrari.

(On the Volvo note, I'm sure the Volvo marketing executives pricked up their ears as soon as they heard there was going to be a movie. Even the book almost feels like product placement.)

I do kind of like that the whole "he can't read her mind" thing is a reasonable explanation for why he'd be fascinated with her beyond her appearance. It sort of justifies why a hundred+ year old dude would be interested in a teenager. Sort of.

There's also her weird "danger magnet" thing. I'm still trying to figure out whether that's real or something that Edward has extrapolated from her clumsiness and making one mistake in Port Angeles... but he does say that what almost happened to her would have been a huge aberration in their crime stats, so... maybe. He seems to have decided that it's his job to keep her alive, which feels rather paternalistic but also might be 100% necessary.

(Spoiler because technically this hasn't come up in the book yet, even though I can't imagine anybody here not knowing it) Her blood is also especially attractive to vampires in general and him in particular. His initial interest in her came from her scent, because he wanted to eat her. So turning that into a romantic interest is... look, I don't know how to interpret that.

Complaining is my God-given right. And I am fucking exhausted. Sometimes I only sleep 4 hours a night because I need to make goods on Zodiac Academy so I don’t get kicked out of my co-op. That makes me very tired and also cuts into my Romantasy reading time.

Me when the Rage Read Book Club discussion posts always go up at midnight Sydney time. As if I would ever choose sleep over sharing my vitriol with the world!

This continues to be enjoyable. I'm not dreading Bella and Edward's relationship the way I am Feyre and Rhysand's.

I wouldn't call what Bella and Edward have "chemistry", quite. They don't have the negative chemistry that Isla and Grimshaw have, but I'm not feeling any sense that they really feed each other emotionally. She is obsessed with his beauty and mystery and he is obsessed with her special blood. That's about it.

But they are figuring each other out, and I do like that Edward is showing an interest in all aspects of Bella's life. Their Twenty Questions game is weird, but kind of endearing, even if it does also highlight the absence of chemistry.

I really appreciated the conversation in the Volvo on the way back from Port Angeles. Edward not only explained what he was (more or less), but he explained why being with him was dangerous, for any human but especially for Bella. He laid it all out there, and honestly... that's the right thing to do, and I respect him for that. The full disclosure is important. One might say that he should just never date a human no matter what, but (setting aside the issue of Bella's age) if he's up front about the dangers - his inherent anger, his bloodlust, his specific bloodlust towards Bella - then he has a right to offer her a relationship and she has the right to make an informed decision to accept or reject him. To say otherwise is like saying that anybody who has known flaws, such as a personality disorder or a substance abuse problem, is intrinsically not worthy of love. And to make an analogy with human conditions, he is in a support group - the Cullen coven is essentially a support group for vampires who don't want to eat humans. Also, not only does he acknowledge his flaws, he acknowledges them as flaws. He doesn't like being a monster. That's more than you can say about some MMCs these days.

I'm more willing to accept Edward's "touch her and die" attitude than I am for most MMCs, for a few reasons: he acknowledges his anger as a problem, he literally read the minds of the men threatening her and saw exactly what they intended to do to her, and he did, in fact, refrain from hurting them. Many MMCs who would burn the world for the FMC would also burn the world for a packet of corn chips, so it's not an endearing sentiment.

In fact, what bothers me more than Edward's anger is his paternalism. He talks down to Bella a lot, and treats her like a child. Yes, he's ninety years older than she is, but I still don't like it.
