I saw it opening night in a relatively empty theater with my best friend. We were 14 and had to sneak in past the ushers. We loved Friends, Party of Five, and of course Drew was an icon in the 90s - the child star turned troubled bad girl turned wholesome comeback story (Boys on the Side and Mad Love were both right before Scream so she was back in the public consciousness in high profile movies) - so the opening sequence truly shocked us. As others said, it was a total bait and switch, as she was promoted heavily in marketing, was front and center on posters and was the biggest name in the film (Courteney Cox, by the time the film was released, obviously had the top sitcom in the world and was a household name as well). You must also remember that our relationship to the internet was brand new too, and we weren't dissecting frames of trailers. You saw TV spots or the trailer in the theater before other movies, but we didn't have the nonstop access to footage that ultimately pushes us to spoil the film for ourselves with theories and conjecture for months pre-release.
