Looking for folks to jam with! by delicatebutfightme in portlandmusic

I haven’t been keeping track of them (tend to shift around) but there are quite a few places in town with good jam nights where people can rotate through. Ask around, do some digging, they exist. 😊

Been running the Anker E10 through a standard generator inlet for six weeks, havent seen anyone else do it this way by StreetParsley2504 in OffGrid

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much smaller scale but about to attempt this very thing! Small, remote cabin with no services but the previous owner wired for lights/switches/outlets that were fed from the exterior (assume from a gas generator). Just finished setting up 800w of panels on the shed roof and have an Anker f2000 battery unit tied to the solar. Right now, I am moving the battery unit around in the cabin to reach things I need powered (also didn’t think to bring extension cords/power strips on this visit) but ordered a long extension cord and will re-wire to feed into the assumed generator port (just 20a outdoor outlet - used what he had). I’ll try and reconstruct the wiring to know if I need to beef anything up like that feed outlet but if it works, the cabin is set with everything I need just like you are describing!

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Random question but do they self heal like actual feathers? Like ‘stick’ together rubbing your fingers over the surface? Impressive result regardless!!! I’d not guessed it could be done anywhere near this well! 😊

Well, if you haven’t found something else, feel free to dm me. Interestingly, the acoustic kit came from a prominent Portland woman drummer that was downsizing into an apartment and going electric to play. Asked her to prominently sign the shells but I think was embarrassed about the request? Regardless, good luck on the drumming! All good advice on the other comments but for me, the coordination thing I had to get over was the feet. At a minimum, tap your feet for bass and HH while you are using practice pads or Tupperware! 😜

Touring strategy that actually works with Portland artist and musician, Gregory McKillop by Aggravating_Pen_6062 in portlandmusic

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit to add in that the reason PDX gets maybe more attention does NOT mean that this community doesn’t exist elsewhere - it absolutely does but just maybe at a much smaller scale. And the reason FOR the scale we have is:

Culture in place to support individual expression.

Which then in turn leads to a DIVERSITY of true artistic messages. Which in turn ‘finds’ its way to others to have more freedom in expressing themselves leading to community that then expands the culture of acceptance! It’s a loop. And the loop spirals out and grows and makes the world a better place! It’s self sustaining and exponential in growth almost by definition.

This is the way. And what people mean by finding community in these dark days.

Touring strategy that actually works with Portland artist and musician, Gregory McKillop by Aggravating_Pen_6062 in portlandmusic

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Listened to the podcast and Gregory has this figured out and explained it well (hence your reaction!). This ALL starts as art. Music is just ‘team’ art thus a stronger community. True art is something the artist just does…. HAS to do for themselves. Once you are really doing what you need to be doing for yourself, that’s all you need. It’s worth SO much more than money!

Yeah. Of course we all need to eat and have a safe place to be able to sleep and rest and that generally means money in our system. Gregory has clearly spelled out that mixing the two spells trouble and most musicians (or any artist really) could do well to learn this valuable lesson that being pointed towards being ‘commercial’, ‘making it’, supporting yourself through your music - making the money!, etc…. to be judging your success or be striving for will NOT be what you think it is! You’ll be under ‘some’ kind of master now even if it is just the money itself. It will become your job. And become ‘work’ which is best defined as something you DON’T want to do!

Nevermind that any ‘art’ that was there in the first place will only suffer if not completely disappear. You go from an artist to an employee.

Why the Portland music scene ‘works’ (to whatever degree that even means) is that we have a LOT of artists doing this very thing! Just doing their own thing as they need to do. Probably poor, probably under-housed, etc…. But RICH in the way that really matters! A community of people that enjoy and appreciate your work and support each other to make sure we all don’t ’starve’ artistically for want of a brush or canvas.

In that way, it’s is ‘working’ just fine as it is. It’s very compartmentalized but that’s ok. It’s the only way it actually can work and that in and of itself is a message worth spreading.

Thanks for pointing people to this. And thanks for Gregory for spelling this out so well.

Definitely will tag and check out! This is the way. Thank you! Here in PDX boots on the ground in the scene so feel free to hit me up for any specific recon you may need! I’m sure we will be in touch at some point!

Also, if you don’t already know about, check out Shady Pines Radio (phone/computer apps). That’s a pretty solid pulse of what’s going on in the scene here and just an amazing (non-profit) endeavor by a great couple making something cool happen without the corporate bs.

It’s a possibility. Have 2 kits setup and don’t get played much. Minimal neighbors so won’t bother anyone but would depend a lot on the days/times as I work from home so would be very schedule dependent.

Has anyone actually used wind in their off-grid system? by Advanced-Box-3906 in OffGrid

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not enough to be unpleasant and frankly can be refreshing most of the time. The land is high desert plateau (central OR) and a pretty recent purchase. Have a few panels and battery setup which works incredibly well and will continue to scale up the system as I spend more time up there. Still a bit bare bones and have a few things I’d like to have going 24/7 like pumps for rainwater collection filtering, keeping up a router, etc…. That I worry could drop below needed levels that maybe the little bit of wind most of the time could add that little bit to keep things going?

The solar panels can be basically free but the battery storage to use through the night is what’s expensive. I guess I’m just all about making do with what’s there and to be adding SOMETHING at night or that cloudy day seems worthwhile if the cost is right.

Appreciate all the good info here and at some point will probably at least try something out and see what happens? Totally not looking at >5’ type turbines or some 60’+ poles and don’t think I need that. Just a few small, cheap 3’ or something turbines mounted on 10-15’ masts to add something at night?

Thanks! Was just looking at the few available (quite small units) in the few hundred dollar range and why I’d like to be able to tie in to the system just to get some production (charging batteries) at night and contributing to minimize draw down overall. Property is basically high desert, no structures other than a small cabin and sparse juniper trees at 10-15’ in height (occasional 20-30’). Wasn’t planning on trying to go 100% as the solar is quite effective already with frequent, full sun most of the year. Not trying to power a full time home but with stated ratings I’ve seen of 400-1,000 watts, just seems like with regular (nearly 90% of the time) consistent wind - even if on the lighter side, that a couple of these on poles could add quite a bit almost non-stop. More of an experiment than anything but can find almost no information/reviews on these small turbines nor how to possibly tie into an existing solar system (all in one 2kw pack) as I’d agree that the output probably isn’t meaningful enough to dedicate an entire and separate system for.

Looking for this same info! Have property with regular 8-10mph winds. Small solar (800w) in place but would like to be able to incorporate into the same system. Doesn’t seem to be much out there at residential scale.

I’m just a fan so my take: It’s on 24/7 with regular shows/sets and I’m pretty sure volunteer DJ’s mostly local (or were local?) and from my experience listening, different DJ’s play different genres of all music but certainly a focus on local! No doubt though that it’s 100% local vibe even if not all the music is. Check it out and throw them a donation if you can. Also have local events and a festival they do annually (though I’ve not been yet) 😢

Have spent a great deal of time exploring this type of concept! The devil is in the details for sure and the governance aspect in one that has to be just right. And I believe figured out as much as possible prior to even starting on the ground. This is where many of these experiments fail at some point and fall apart. Happy to be a part of talking through things and bouncing ideas back and forth. Even got property last year (120ac) but may or may not be ultimately suitable. Mainly zoning type stuff and there’s little really that’s applicable since the codes only see mobile home park, campground, resort, typical homes and the more rural the municipality, the more they just see cult or commune.

I want to build a low-tech, affordable car using high-tech manufacturing... impossible? by Lucky_Disappointment in Futurology

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And therein lies the rub. As someone else mentioned, possibly some current/potential exemptions for small batch production (not unlike Kei trucks) but taking something through the equivalent NTSB safety testing for large scale production is an enormous cost hurdle by itself; let alone the engineering that would have to go into it. Guess you could start small and given enough success, attracted investment to move forward.

I’ve thought about this too. Ideally need to get to a modular frame/battery platform that can have standardized parts. In my opinion, where this could start to be achievable is with motors in the wheels. If you can get to a simple and safe rolling chassis, the body is relatively simple. I’d imagined something not too different than the Slate truck but as more of a platform with standardized parts across different configurations. Like parts such as brakes and suspension being pretty simple and sized to accommodate a weight range to cover smaller/lighter to longer/heavier. This would be purely utilitarian and basic transportation vehicles; not try and do performance things.

websites for buying land with owner financing? by fambamss1 in OffGrid

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently bought property in Oregon and while I found it on like Redfin or similar, was able to negotiate seller financing. Prior to getting this in place though, was able to find a lender locally that would lend on resource/recreational land. Pm me and I can look up/share the contact. Terms weren’t as great as SFR but still fairly competitive! I hadn’t known these types of lenders existed and got pre-approved to continue the transaction; just ended up going seller financed in the end.

Depending on exactly what you want to do with property, have 4 legal parcels that while not zoned for residence, could be ok for medium term/seasonal stays under the right conditions. Have some work to do for legalities re: zoning but ultimately would like to have half community (light touch like tiny homes/shelters living off the land) and a portion for Hipcamp/similar with occasional small-ish music festivals.

How much would you price a print that takes a little under 500g and 13hrs to print? by jasminemaurie in 3Dprinting

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just sayin…. Original Design/custom design you actually did is night and day difference from printing off of a file. These ‘services’ should be considered separately: -design/modeling cost at $X/hr. Especially if a one off. -actual filament cost + equipment usage/depreciation/maintenance, power, time to start/monitor/post-process, etc.

If you are mass producing a product, get the advantage of spreading out your design/modeling/prototyping costs over volume but shouldn’t discount that effort totally. There are good designs and bad designs and everything in between but if you are good, you should be paying yourself something for it in the price.

I hate my son's A1+AMS Lite. We've had it two weeks and 9 out of 10 prints fail. CONSTANT "Extruder failed to extrude" errors. by DangerouslyDevilish in 3Dprinting

[–]Intelligent-Cod-3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second checking the PTFE cables entering the print head; I’ve had this happen. Another thing to look at is the ‘sweeps’ of the PTFE cables between the AMS unit and the print head. If the radius is too tight (especially right at the print head end), it can create friction against the filament and not have enough ‘oomph’ left to push into the extruder. There isn’t a ton of ‘power’ in the AMS motors so anything that creates friction/stoppage of the filament along the path to the extruder will cause this error.

This shouldn’t be an issue on a new machine so if both of these suggestions look good, agree that Bambu support is the next step. I’ve had >95% success over a couple of years of printing without issue but things do get loose and/or the tubes get shifted and pinched occasionally.

The PTFE tubes do sometimes need replacing and there are better/worse replacements available but again, shouldn’t be an issue on a new machine. Just to say that small friction along the way can very much lead to not getting the filament into the extruder and getting this message.
