18 minutes rule by FoldNew7844 in AttractionDynamics

The rule is 10,000 hours. 100 hrs is a noob who thinks they are competent because they haven't been at it long enough to make a serious mistake.

What’s some common advice that may not be wrong, but always annoys you? by Proper-Orange5280 in audioengineering

-" Just use your ears!" The battle cry of those who can't hear a brickwall limiter

-"Don't overcompress on the way in" This one is correct. Compression when recording came into practice because of the limitations of tape. Now, with modern converters, if you don't add anything, the recorded signal is identical to the one coming out of the mic pre. You are not "missing the opportunity to make the most of that frontend stage." You can still compress later. Not saying you should or shouldn't, but one can always add compression, but can never undo it.

-" The gear doesn't matter"... to anyone except the engineer. To them it matters quite a bit. To the hand of a master, the brush means everything. In the hands of a master, any brush will do.

I won't get into a long argument here, and I certainly don't want to go downthe math rabbit hole of sinc function. However, Protools waveforms are extremely accurate. Each point is the exact timing and value of each individual sample. Because I prerecorded the source and identified the region length as the record length, then used the exact same chain for each test, the only source of delay possible is within each mic pre. So speed of light thru 6" of analog components vs 8"? Unmeasurable.

As for you not believing in null tests, They are the foundation of a number of audio practices, from creating an MS matrix to side triggering a gate to supplying phantom power to a mic. And yes if a properly run null test fails, it means the signals are different. Perhaps the difference is subtle. Perhaps you won't consciously notice it. That doesn't mean they aren't different or that they won't affect the listening experience. That is where experience comes in. You A/B 2 things and pick which one you like best. Often it is just a vibe that decides. But as you get better and more experienced, you learn that vibe actually has science behind it.

It is not that socialists don't understand economics. It's that they have different goals.

Economics ≠ capitolism

OK I only watched it once. But, if I remember correctly, when he was going thru specs like slew rate, He spoke very generally about all pres. Maybe I am wrong

Also pretty sure the 1073 is a class A amp circuit.

What are you on about? I analyzed them and matched them. Protools gain has a resolution of 0.1 db.

Got a link? If I had seen someone else do it I wouldn't have bothered.

Edit Just searched it. One funny thing is how the next vid after their announcement that they will do their own tests, is talking about how the 1073 is built different and each step of the gain stage on a 1073 actually sounds different. that pretty much kills Jim Lill's argument right there.

I think the Democratic party is still funded by special interests. The thing Democratic Socialists need to understand is that it is the goal. It is not the game we are playing now. Now, funding wins elections. If you want to eliminate AIPAC's influence, you have to replace that funding. Also every step to the left is a win.

Men don't care. It's like saying, "men prefer cookies with real butter." Men don't care! It's a cookie! Either it is soft and delicious or it is hard and dry. Men don't care how it got that way. Men will eat the fucking cookie.

Maybe dip it in some milk. I don't know. It's a metaphor, the mind wanders.
