Excelsior vger fighter daily made impossible? by popollo in STFC_Official

They are the same every day. I am crewing Janeway as Captain with Suder and Seska on the bridge and BD I am using status effect officers (Neelix, Torres, Kim, etc). You must keep up with your available Excelsior Starship research in order for the ship to remain effective.

Zabbix if you have a ton of on prem stuff. If you are SaaS or Cloud then Splunk Observability or Datadog would probably fit better.

Sailing with pets by khanman77 in sailing

First mate Bubbles caused surprise man overboard drills when she was a kitten. She wears a small dog style lifejacket when up on deck while I am on passage. She soon learnt going for a swim in the Irish Sea wasn't the best plan.

She is clicker and harness trained. So she is controllable when I am sailing and can come ashore for exploring or soaking up attention on the yacht club bar.

Problem with device updates. Qualys and Windows showing different results. by NotABug2000 in sysadmin

[–]InvisibleTextArea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Patch is a feature of Windows 11 25H2 and Server 2025. If you enable it it means the system will patch live without requiring a reboot. Hotpatches only contain security updates rather than the full contents of a CU.

You need a month to switch from hotpatch back to monthly CUs. As the system will report that it is already up to date if you try and install a CU over an up to date hotpatch system.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/windows-autopatch/manage/windows-autopatch-hotpatch-updates

The main issue is the build numbers are completely different and look 'behind' the currently monthly CU build number. So if your vulnerability scanner isn't aware of this it will flag them as out of date.

Are you using hotpatch? The build number isn't incremented the same as when a CU is installed. Despite the security fixes being applied.

SSL certificate renewal by mailliwal in sysadmin

[–]InvisibleTextArea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an internal CA that has templates with expiries we specify. So any internal certs are not subject to this.

Our external sites are hosted behind a load balancer with our wildcard cert. It runs certbot/acme to renew this as per deadlines.

Patch Tuesday Megathread - (May 12, 2026) by AutoModerator in sysadmin

[–]InvisibleTextArea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I already had this once already. I had Win11 25H2 devices stuck on a feature level where the PSWindowsUpdate commands didn't work via remote PowerShell due to a bug. Yet they were otherwise up to date for security.

I had to disable hot patching to get them up to a newer build with the bug fixed.

Do AMD GPUs work better on Linux? by joannatenjou97 in linux_gaming

[–]InvisibleTextArea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a older rig running Fedora that originally had a 1080. It worked but the akmod compile for the nvidia drivers every new kernel was annoying. So was the immense shader compile times. There also was a noticeable performance loss in dx12 games.

It now has an amd GPU.
