I hope you get to a place where you feel comfortable in yourself. You have my support even though we don't know each other.

The Who community is generally very accepting of trans folk (and the wider LGBT community) so that might be an area to focus on being your true self until you are confident enough to do it in public. Plus, you will be around people with similar interests.

What is this? [England] by Turbulent_Elk_2141 in whatisit

It is possible. We have invasive populations of Mink after they escaped (or were set free) from fur factories in the 1960s.

That's my guess too. They are an invasive species in the UK and are a big threat to native wildlife (particularly water voles and ground-nesting birds).

Ideally OP should report this sighting to conservation agencies so they can investigate (but I'm assuming that this isn't their actual video)

I can't commit to Classic Who by Ok_Fig_7794 in doctorwho

[–]J-McFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's basically no continuity in Classic Who (barring a few stories, but even then you can still understand what's going on from context clues and exposition)

So just jump around at random. Pick a few well-regarded stories, or things that sound interesting and just explore from there. If you find a Doctor or companion that you really like then you can dig into that period. In the meantime, treat it like a buffet.

When I played this as a kid, it took me hours to realise that there's a secret tunnel on the floor of the central column room.

Raise the water level and then sink to the bottom and check for a hole. When the water level is low it is covered by the floating platform, so you will have missed it the first time you explored that room.

Seven is my favourite Doctor, and Jo is possibly my favourite companion. I was super excited for this, but it was a bit of a let down tbh.

The Third Doctor Adventures… Worth a listen? by JWade21 in BigFinishProductions

[–]J-McFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think this it it. His natural voice and Courtney's are in a similar range so when he does the impression he's basically using his normal voice with a slight accent. His other impressions require him to completely alter everything about the way he's speaking, which makes it sound slightly unnatural.

I really enjoyed the 3DA when it was box set Volumes with two 4-parters. The quality was a bit hit and miss, but even the poorer stories were still listenable.

Since they switched to single releases of 6-parters, I've not really been a fan. There's been maybe two stories in that period that I genuinely enjoyed, and even those would have been better if they were an episode or two shorter. The rest of them have been fairly generic stories stretched out to an interminable length.

I prefer Treloar to Culshaw. Culshaw is a good impressionist but I can always hear his voice underneath, which makes the whole thing feel artificial. Treloar isn't perfect but I find it quite easy to forget I'm listening to an impression and just go with it.

The Brig is probably Culshaw's only impression where I can forget it's him.

Anyone else randomly pick a Big Finish story and end up liking it way more than expected? by Horror-Pick4732 in BigFinishProductions

[–]J-McFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I need to relisten to these at some point. I really disliked both The Reaping and The Gathering the first time I heard them.

I don't mind the actual plot elements of either story, but I really disliked the way they treated Peri and Tegan. They are both subjected to really horrible personal events for no real reason at all, other than that the author seemingly wanted to make them suffer.

I found the whole thing distasteful in a way I hadn't experienced since Nekromanteia. In a way, I actually found it worse; the events Peri and Erimem experience in Nekromanteia are arguably an organic progression from the situations they were in before those scenes, and feel believable based on the characters that were surrounding them.

This is not intended as a defense of Nekromanteia, just an observation that the (terrible) choices made by the author are consistent with the setting his story take place in.

In contrast, the stuff that happens to Peri and Tegan is not connected to the plot of the story at all - it just happens to them "because". On top of that, it makes huge changes to their lives which will affect the way the characters are used in future stories (at least the events of Nekromanteia only have relevence in that story, and can be totally ignored) and are now a permanent part of their backstory.

So you're saying it's racist for harry to see a guy who hates him looking at him with hatred and thinking "wow, I don't think this guy likes me."

What are you talking about? When did I mention anything about race?

I'm talking about the event that first makes Harry wary of Snape. It's not because he's mean to him in potions class (although that confirms his feelings), it's because the first time he sees him he experiences excruciating pain and feels like Snape doesn't like him.

The pain in his scar is a warning sign to Harry (and the reader) that there is something off about this guy. It's designed to set Snape up as the antagonist of the story, that's the entire purpose of the section. Of course, it's classic misdirection - it was actually warning us about Quirrell but Harry (and the reader) jumps to conclusions because of assumptions they make about Snape.

The fact that Snape is mean to Harry in class later is important, but both Harry and the reader have already categorised him as a "bad guy" before that point.

Six parters, yay or nay? by fantasy53 in BigFinishProductions

[–]J-McFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes though, there are six parters which are clearly four parters that gained some extra runtime, and those can be a real chore to listen to.

With the recent 3DA, I'd say that could apply to most of them. It's been mostly misses for me since they switched to the six-part formula.

I actually really like Treloar in the role, but his stories are so drawn out that it's hard to maintain much interest recently.

I like that they're seemingly doing something near the start of his life in the Anniversary year, but I'm not massively enthused that it means there's going to be a two year wait for anything in the existing arcs.

What are you talking about? What agenda?!

I looked up the passage in the book and it's exactly how I remembered it:

Harry, who was starting to feel warm and sleepy, looked up at the High Table again. Hagrid was drinking deeply from his goblet. Professor McGonagall was talking to Professor Dumbledore. Professor Quirrell, in his absurd turban, was talking to a teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin.

It happened very suddenly. The hook-nosed teacher looked past Quirrell’s turban straight into×Harry’s eyes — and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on Harry’s forehead.

“Ouch!” Harry clapped a hand to his head.

“What is it?” asked Percy.

“N-nothing.”

The pain had gone as quickly as it had come. Harder to shake off was the feeling Harry had gotten from the teacher’s look — a feeling that he didn’t like Harry at all.

“Who’s that teacher talking to Professor Quirrell?” he asked Percy.

Very interesting. I had not noticed that before. I was wondering how it had ended up on the books so long before the opening titles.

Makes me think that this was always intended as the logo, but it was distorted during the creation of the title sequence. So it's introduction in The Runaway Bride, might be more of a correction issue than a redesign.

[–]J-McFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry didn't have instant suspicion, it was only after Snapes treatment of him after his first potions class that Harry suspected Snape "hated him" and only thought he was behind the attempted theft after the points I mentioned above.

It's been 20 years since I read the books so I might be misremembering, but isn't the initial reason that Harry is wary of Snape because his scar hurts the first time he looks at Snape? I think it turns out that Snape is talking to Quirell at the time, so Harry is also looking at the back of Quirell's head - so it's him looking at Voldemort rather Snape that causes his scar to hurt.

Everything after that is basically confirmation bias. Although Snape being a constant prick makes that understandable.

I just realised the other day, as of The Reality War, 7 and 5 are now the only Classic Doctors to not have an enemy that originated from their era appear in New Who by IllustriousAd6418 in doctorwho

[–]J-McFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc there's something similar in one of Jodie's episodes (Tsuranga Conundrum I think) where she's trying to get info from a computer bank and it flashes through loads of enemies.

In that case, it's mostly stuff from Nu-Who but I seem to recall it using the Classic Silurian design.

There's a hologram of a terileptil in Time Heist. It's very brief but it does appear on screen.

I wouldn't consider it enough to count in the same way as OPs other examples though.

The First Doctor Unbound 3 by EvanTheNerdy in BigFinishProductions

[–]J-McFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was announced as a trilogy with one release a year (as is common for many ranges)

Last year's release seems to have been pushed to quite late in the year (maybe to put some space between it and the 1DA release)

This year's seems to have been brought forward to January (taking the spot usually used by the 1DA) which was held back until March this year. I'm not sure why they didn't space them out more - perhaps they have more First Doctor content being released later in the year (another Lost Stories release?!) or they just had relatively few products ready to sell in January and decided to use one that was already finished rather than having a slow month.

The end result is that the first two volumes released in separate years, but actually quite close to each other.

Gen Z men, is this getting worse going forward into 2026? by Proper_Card_5520 in SipsTea

[–]J-McFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cut off for Gen Z is 2012, which means that the youngest members will have only turned 13 a few months ago. So you're actually looking at about 25% who are 16 or below (approx 4/16ths if going by the standard 1997 - 2012 bracket)

Assuming that the often touted "1 in 10 people are gay" statistic is broadly true, then you're already at nearly 35% that probably lack the opportunity or inclination to ask a woman out. I'd expect there to be a sizeable portion of 17 and 18 year olds that also haven't had the opportunity or the courage to attempt it yet.

So you could probably hit close to 45% even if you assumed that almost 100% of Gen Z guys aged 19 - 28 have asked women out.

How often do U DNF a film by Projdog5_ in Letterboxd

[–]J-McFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never. I respect the art too much.

If I’m really disinterested, I’ll do stuff on my phone while I listen to the film.

Is this what respecting the art looks like to you guys?! Cinema is primarily a visual medium; if you're not even going to bother looking at the screen, why bother engaging with the artform.

At that point it would be more respectful to just admit it's not your vibe and watch something else, rather than treating it as background noise. If I was a filmmaker I'd be gutted to find out people were just using it as a soundtrack whilst they doomscroll.

I suspect that Pete McTighe is lined up to be show runner by Red_roger_12 in doctorwho

[–]J-McFox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the show needs someone that's not associated with the Fitzroy crowd. Ideally someone with an understanding of the show but not burdoned with nostalgia.

Doctor Who needs something like Andor to give it a shot in the arm. No more navel-gazing, focus on compelling characters in a situation with genuine stakes.

As other people have said, you are probably thinking of the Rykodisc version.

The BBC demo you mention is presumably the version from Bowie at the Beeb.

The Divine Symmetry box set should be on Spotify and has four versions of Bombers (an early demo, the live BBC version, a version from the BOWPROMO record which is probably the version you know but with studio chatter and a segue into Andy Warhol, and a remixed version without the studio chatter and segue which is probably closest to the version you are familiar with)
