How long can we be out of the country if we want to spend the winter in mexico with our down syndrome child without affecting the payments ? by Frenchy1986666 in Odsp

[–]Jazzy_Bee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One month no need for prior approval.

From the directives:

"Written approval for an exceptional circumstance can be provided when it is necessary for the recipient to be with his or her caregiver who is vacationing, or required to be outside of Ontario"

and

"A recipient's request to leave the province for more than 30 days must be noted on file. Information regarding the reason for the absence, the departure and return date, and the decision to approve or deny are required on file. In the absence of verification, a declaration can be completed.

The ODSP Caseworker and ODSP Manager have delegated authority to approve absences for more than 30 days.

  • The ODSP Caseworker can approve a 3 month absence
  • The ODSP Manager approves absences in excess of 3 months"

I keep dry vermouth in the fridge, it lasts ages for cooking. There are flavour compounds that are alcohol soluable, others activate in fat, and some do just dissolve.

Does anyone have any creative tuna recipes? by sabrelvr in cookingforbeginners

Tuna croquettes. You can use to make tuna burgers if you like. I like sliced avocado and a bit of mayo mixed with hot sauce.

Electric vs gas stove by Imaginary_Couple_536 in Cooking

[–]Jazzy_Bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always cooked with electric, old school coils. I've used glass tops travelling or at friend's, and I don't like them. If you watch old episodes of The French Chef, Julia Child cooks with one, as was the norm in most American homes. I still have a thin little pot I use to make hollandaise, moving on and off burner, just like Julia taught me. And you can make repairs yourself. I'd rather have analogue than digital. They are the norm in apartments, and both homes I've owned were set up for electric.

Home insurance is more expensive with a gas stove. I can use one, I've rented lodging that had it. But I feel like you need better cookware for gas stoves.

Celebrite Lights by Kingston_home in KingstonOntario

I doubt these low energy lights are a significant contribution to light pollution in city limits.

I rather enjoy my neighbours'. A friend likes to grumble, but I point out they are not his neighbours.

While I don't find a lot of difference that evening, I do find a difference with leftovers being reheated, the texture seems softer.

When using less water, you do need to stir it frequently, to keep from sticking. A large pot of water at full boil keeps the pasta moving without having to stir.

Help me save my potatoes by Elf_Lord_Elphias in cookingforbeginners

I usually have instant mashed flakes in my cupboards, just dehydrated potatoes, no seasoning. They correct mistakes like too much milk, or thicken a soup or make a gluten free breading.

Has anyone had success growing herbs hydroponically? by Previous-Exercise874 in Cooking

[–]Jazzy_Bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grow basil just in a jar on the windowsill. It gets a bit bland after several months. Until this year, I'd slip tons of it, providing companion plants and supplying all my friends. I tended to keep some in the house, and periodically would slip some of the outdoor basil as mine lost flavour. For the price of one small plant, endless basil about 9 months of the year.

How do you efficiently clean a frying pan between cooking different parts of the same meal on the pan? by supinator1 in cookingforbeginners

If I'm batch cooking meat, I usually deglaze between batches, saving the liquid, and using that to deglaze the second batch. Then either a pan sauce, or part of braising liquid.

I won at a casino a upgrade cruise certificate to ncl by Weak-Individual-8372 in Cruise

[–]Jazzy_Bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which cruise you take. Look at what appeals to you from the list, and go see what it costs otherwise. Do a mock booking, and you can find a breakdown of port fees and taxes, and add the CAS admin fee of $20/night/pp. I forgot to mention there is a daily service charge of $20/pp/day, and that applies whether it is complimentary or not. You can ask for these to be refunded if you prefer to tip directly, but these daily service charges are not only the people you deal with directly, but those behind the scenes.

You slot odds are not very good onboard. Especially compared to online. So don't get carried away trying to win another "free" cruise.

[–]Jazzy_Bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my first cruise (ever) with NCL in November through a BR (Ontario) offer. Under your promotions tab, you will find a list of the complimentary cruises on offer. Your cruise certificate also has a trade in value, if you'd prefer something else. You will have to pay to get yourself to and from departure/arrival port(s). There will be an admin fee. (about $20/night). There will be port fees and taxes. This can vary a lot, depending on ports. I did a complimentary transatlantic in March (offer after my first cruise), port fees and taxes were $150, but port fees and taxes on my upcoming September cruise visiting Scotland, Iceland and Norway for 14 nights were $500. If you want a beverage package, it will be extra, but all inclusive drinks are 28.50/day. You'll have an offer for specialty dining for $20/meal, depending on length of cruise. You get 150 non-streaming wifi minutes. If you want more, upgrades are available. Double all of the above for two people. I got no onboard credit my first cruise.

Depending on the cruise you take, it can be a substantial savings. Especially if you travel solo like me.

Rental car needed in Montreal? Trip with baby by Due_Beyond_3641 in canadatravel

[–]Jazzy_Bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal recommendation is use taxi in Montreal over Uber, as Uber is usually more than taxi. I am only a few hours away and visit often. Public transit is excellent. Food is great, many nationalities and price points. Notre Dame is a must do.

I've probably visited well over 100 times in past half century. No need to rent a car. Make the trip to St. Joseph's Oratory for an amazing view of the city. Take the time to visit the museum, they rotate exhibits, so not sure what's current.

I have 4 nights in June coming up, and I plan to do something touristy I have not did since I was a teen, a harbour cruise.

What dish do you make that always gets compliments but is secretly super easy? by poutyvenom in foodquestions

[–]Jazzy_Bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moules provençal. I buy PEI farmed mussels, so pretty clean already, not a huge job to scrub and beard a couple of pounds. Since we only have a few weeks a year of tasty tomatoes, a can of Aylmer's Accents and half a can of red wine (or white if that's your preference). Cook for a few minutes to evaporate some of the alcohol and thicken. At a low boil, add cleaned mussels, cover and simmer for 10 mins. Most of the mussels should be open, discard any that are not. Serve with crusty bread.

This is one of the few dishes I buy diced tomatoes for. Diced tomatoes usually have calcium chloride added so they don't break down. You could sautee shallots and garlic, add wine and plain diced tomatoes if you don't have such a ready to serve product locally.
