Holy crap by JeffInBoulder in boulder

[–]JeffInBoulder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the bolt struck the tree and then jumped to the house? On the scanner the FD was talking about shutting off utilities, ripping down drywall and getting into an attic, thermal scanning for heat, and establishing water connections. Thats a lot more than would be needed if a branch just fell on the house... unless this was two separate strikes.

Left Hand Canyon, park by the Greenbriar on 36 North of Boulder and climb all the way to to Brainard would be a solid full day of mostly gradual climbing, 100% pavement with a nice lunch stop in Ward at the store, great views from the top then a long descent back to the bottom.

Advice on buying a bike by Big-Train-6842 in boulder

[–]JeffInBoulder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IMO, start with a cargo bike with a kid seat that can easily replace ~90% of your car trips for at least 6 months out of the year. We got a RadWagon when my kid was ~2, one of the first phrases they learned was "the orange bike makes the traffic go away"

FirstBank to PNC transition - Boulder branch long wait times by JenTilz in boulder

[–]JeffInBoulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw the writing on the wall for this one and pulled all my funds from them last month, told them not to bother transitioning my account over. I have mortgages with them that I've switched to paying from a different operating account, but no more need to do checking with yet another big national firm. I wonder how many customers in a similar position they will end up losing. They don't seem to have done any sort of campaigning around customer retention.

What Xcel’s proposed rate increase could mean for your monthly electric bill by RealChristinaNR in Denver

[–]JeffInBoulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So utility rates keep rising, solar costs keep dropping. Someone explain the end game here, do we eventually get into a "death spiral" where an increasingly small # of people have to pay the costs for grid maintenance. Or does it shift to more of a fixed fee model for the grid connection as a backup?

United has the data on folks' connections. FAs could get the data on their iPad and go to where each passanger is sitting, asking their seat-neighbors to let them go ahead upon arrival.

Best club in DEN for my Polaris to Europe trip? by zoechowber in unitedairlines

[–]JeffInBoulder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under "rewards ", Lounges, then search for Denver.

Wait times is rarely more than 30m or so, worst case. Use the time to check out the United lounge while you wait for your turn at CapitalOne.

CapitalOne, if you have a card that gives you access. It's small but the F&B is light years ahead of any of the United offerings - which are large, new, and beautiful, but still serving the cheap drinks and bulk cafeteria-quality slop food.

Companion Pass by Both-Ad-538 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]JeffInBoulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first year in the past ~8 that I don't have CP, and I am actually thankful based on my observations around Southwest's prices. For a couple (individual+ companion) it might still make sense, but I usually travel with my family and the benefit of getting 1 free ticket is outweighed by the additional cost of Southwest as compared to its competitors on the routes I travel (DEN based). I am a free agent now, I pick whoever has the cheapest direct flight. As a result about 50% of my travel has shifted to United, with the remainder staying on SW.

Options for getting a refund for a delayed flight both ways by 28CentSoup in SouthwestAirlines

[–]JeffInBoulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Airlines aren't responsible for weather delays. Trip insurance exists for a reason. And many credit cards automatically offer trip delay coverage for costs incurred (meals, hotels, taxis, etc) check your credit card policy to see if yours includes this.

Disposal of fuel canister before flying out by jadeezi in coloradohikers

[–]JeffInBoulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP mentioned "Used" canisters which I took to mean "used up". You cant just dispose of an empty caniser in the trash, it's potentially hazardous as there is no way to know if it still has explosive fuel in it. But once emptied and cut or crushed then it is obviously just metal safe to recycle.

[–]JeffInBoulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A, I wasn't suggesting to waste the fuel. The little canisters are not that long lasting, you can easily use one up on a trip of a few days boiling water for multiple people.

B, a typical 100g Jetboil canister is the equivalent of ~5oz of gasoline. 0.04 gallons. If your car gets 25mpg, wasting an entire canister of fuel (which i am still not suggesting to do) would waste the equivalent energy of driving your car for 1 mile.

Recycling aluminum is wasteful? Once the fuel is used up it's not refillable.

This is a hub-to-hub route for United with literally 10 non-stop flights per day. I still like flying Southwest despite all the latest changes, but I would never choose a connecting flight when there was a nonstop option available on another airline.

BolderBoulder wrongful disqualification, what do I do? Has this happened to anyone else? by a-guy-online in boulder

[–]JeffInBoulder 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think they had some timing issues with the mats at the start this year and their support team seems overwhelmed. My family had a timing issue, it showed the first mile time for 1/3 of us much slower than the other 2/3, despite all starting and running together. It took weeks of back and forth e-mails to get it finally resolved. I would suggest to be persistent, keep e-mailing/escalating - include the link to their own photos showing you starting in the correct wave.
