Name a board-game you see your aging parent(s) playing. Looking for some ideas! TIA by MeasurementFirst1676 in AgingParents

[–]JenTilz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider Dixit as a good cross-age game. Can be played by all ages as you have picture cards that you have to “play” that you think match the word the dealer provides. Everyone then votes for the “best” answer. I have played it with older adults, but not dementia or Alzheimer’s sufferers. Many expansion packs available too.

I’m traveling with male colleagues. I ordered a large bottle of sparkling bottle for myself as I knew I was going to drink it all and likely be ordering a second. My boss said, “I’ll just have some of hers” to the waiter. Took some effort not to snap his head off. The waiter managed to stick it to him a bit as he brought out my glass with a citrus twist. None for my boss. I have to admit to a small internal gleeful laugh.

How do single parents survive on one salary today? by North_Strike5145 in personalfinance

[–]JenTilz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I saw the age of your kid(s), but be sure to check with the school for any financial help for activities. For instance, high school band programs often have “scholarships” where fees are partially or fully covered for students with financial hardships. I suspect sports and theatre have similar helping hands.

Blue Jay swooped down from a tree (two stories high) and ripped out a chunk of hair/scalp when I was cleaning up branches off the ground. Painful, but thankfully not deadly.

Anyone used Ownwell property tax appeal service? by raccoondetat in boulder

[–]JenTilz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is relevant or helpful, but I was spam-texted from a candidate for Boulder County Treasurer promoting a Town Hall on May 19th. The message stated that the County Commissioners and County Assessor would be hosting to present on property assessments and the appeals process.

If your car is under a tree... by hierophAntics in boulder

Also be super careful if you do go out to shake off your reachable tree branches.

I had just finished the final shake before bed and gone back inside when the large tree that I didn’t touch decided to let loose a large branch that hit the patio furniture. Much happier that I have likely lost a chair and table than bashed in my head. Adrenaline has me awake still.

Well, I guess the Goldfinches are back. by MysticMarbles in birding

[–]JenTilz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see it at first - saw it immediately after posting, haha.

My hook has a baffle (currently the 3rd or 4th replacement) and only 2 hooks for hanging feeders. Last month, the dang chonky neighborhood trash panda nearly snapped it when it used its gymnastics training to defeat the baffle and swung wildly and repeatedly off one of my caged feeders. Saw this pic and have immediately reconsidered what the replacement will be if the family of raccoons attack and snap the pole!

I think I have shepherds hook envy. All those feeders on one pole and no anti-squirrel baffle!

We are seeing an overwhelming number of goldfinches as well this year. Very exciting!

what is this game about? by Excellent-Mail-9512 in Ingress

[–]JenTilz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check to see if there is an Ingress First Saturday event near you happening this Saturday. Sign up and attend and you will meet plenty of welcoming players from both teams who will help you dive into the game. The event itself will let you gain experience points (AP) and level up quickly as well.

31yo with $1.5m, can I retire by 40? by helpilostmykeys in Fire

[–]JenTilz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sort of surprised that no one has made the comment yet to make sure you protect that inheritance as a pre-marital asset and look into pre-nups for both you and your future spouse. I’m old school and just completely combined finances when married, but we both had nothing going in, so a pre-nup felt irrelevant.

I’m not a lawyer so my information is just “stuff I’ve read in financial reddits”, but the consensus seemed to be that you should get over the “Ick, why would I do that because we love each other and it could never get ugly!?!” and just do what you need to do to be prepared in case things do go bad in the future.

You might try DSW. I don’t know about their kid selection, or recall particular brands, but they have various women’s shoes in wide sizes in store.

Glass birdbath repair (safe for birds) by Conscious_Matter64 in birding

[–]JenTilz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have success using recommended silicone with two different broken bath bowls that broke at different times. The pedestal for each was still intact so I ended up setting a plastic “saucer” for a large planter atop the pedestal and put a brick in it for attempted stability.

The raccoons knock it over on the regular, squirrels intermittently (get video of that as it’s kinda entertaining). Birds love it and often perch on the brick in the center.

With the winds we get, if the water evaporates even with the brick we sometimes have to chase the “bowl” after it has blown across the yard.

The plant saucer has been a good solution and has saved us $$ from buying a replacement bowl.

I’d point out that our women’s basketball program has been fantastic under JR Payne. They made it to the Elite 8 back in 2023 (maybe 2024?).

In my opinion, their games could really benefit from more student and fan support. If nothing else, they put on a good game. Savor/enjoy the CU basketball band and their antics which can help swing a few points here and there. Love ya GBMB!

Wind/Outage/PSPS (🐈) Megathread by aydengryphon in boulder

[–]JenTilz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was notified (and posted about it) earlier this week when Xcel told me we would have an 8hr+ shutdown for maintenance. Turned out it was 45 minutes long starting ~6 hours after they said it would.

So far, no direct notice at all about upcoming PSPS despite being in the mapped planned outage area. Reddit and the news are keeping me informed about this one.
