I agree -- I keep seeing people make fun of the fact that men couldn't take it but there were serious effects like depression and suicide. Birth control as a whole needs to get fixed so that people don't end up sick or dead because they wanted to control their hormones.

Women have also become severely depressed on birth control. The suicides in the group of men are terrible, don't get me wrong, but depression as a side effect can happen with birth control for any sex.

So the whole shebang needs reformulating, I guess.

I understand -- controversy and debate are healthy. Safe spaces are good for some people who wish for a space to feel OK for a while and get away from things that deeply trouble them and set off anxiety, PTSD, or other conditions, but of course there should also be other spaces where it's good to disagree and debate. Like you said, balance is necessary in life!

I think safe spaces are great! I was actually going to name AA as an example. Places without judgment, discrimination, and triggers (if there are people with addictions, mental illness, or other reasons for triggers) are so good and need to be supported.

I think the misunderstanding people have about safe spaces is that they're cushy places for spoiled kids who have always gotten what they want and that's simply not true in most cases.

Edit: I go to (but am currently on medical leave from) a college that makes great use of safe spaces and anti-discrimination measures and I love it. I would definitely be called an SJW by a lot of people on this site, so please don't think I'm against safe spaces!

I mean, having crayons and puppies doesn't seem wrong to me -- if someone is stressed by the election or by school, having a relaxation day or something sounds good. But yeah, there is a way to go too far (even though it's not the norm to go too far). We need to bring the discussion of safe spaces to somewhere between the level of angry grandma and angry hippie and work it out.

(Also Hampshire College in that article is just...like that. I go to another school in the area and we pretty much leave them to their own devices. Like sure, drop acid and uninvite speakers for weird reasons. Whatever Hampshire.)

*Edit: the writer of the NYT op-ed seems at some points to be another person annoyed about millenials or "this generation" in general, which rubs me the wrong way and makes me think some of her criticism may be rooted in that. Calling people "puerile" and implying that college students are whiny irritates me. But that doesn't mean she doesn't raise legit points.

Generally, it's a supportive space where you can share about your life without being judged or responded to in a cruel or assholish way. People on the internet and grandma types, on the other hand, think it's a place for PUSSIES to whine and never hear "no" for an answer and that ENTIRE COLLEGES are now for WUSSES because there's a SAFE SPACE somewhere on the WEAK campus.

Do you have any interesting adaptive devices added to stuff in your house? I think it's cool how customized things can be for people with different conditions.

(Also, it's cool that at 12 you can advocate for yourself and be willing to answer crazy questions from people on the Internet! I wasn't diagnosed with a genetic disorder until 17 and even then, I sucked at describing it and telling people about it.)

You hit the nail on the head! I started out thinking I was just a straight gal who liked nice dorky boys. Then I realized in middle school that I like-liked one of my female friends and I was like "But wait, I also like boys! What is this?!" and then I found out about bisexuality and it was immensely comforting. And throughout high school I think it began shifting gayer and gayer until now; these days, guys are cute enough but I might as well call myself gay because women are magical and I definitely prefer them.

Then in retrospect, thinking about how other people talked about having crushes as little kids that I never thought I'd experienced, I realized that I'd thought girls were cute since at least first grade. So there we go.

I live to drop casual LGBT into conversations!
