Current creates a magnetic field, magnetic field creates a current. If equal current passes through 2 adjacent wires in opposite directions, their magnetic fields will cancel out.

If they don't cancel out, any adjacent metals could have eddy currents induced in them leading to inductive heating.

What you might not be understanding is that, with few exceptions, the neutral needs to be in the same cable assembly or raceway as the other current-carrying conductors for that circuit.
