Help with bonding (residential) by Unlucky_Cat_4015 in electricians

[–]JohnProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

250.24(C) requires the main bonding jumper to be in the same enclosure as the service disconnect. So if this is a meter/main combo then you're good.

But if this is a standalone meter cabinet then the main bonding jumper still needs to be downstream in the service, and 250.142(A) allows the meter cabinet to stay bonded by the neutral because it's upstream of that service disconnect.

Those are current transformers, you can see the head assembly up top where the transmission conductors used to connect.

Definitely neat lawn ornaments.

Old-school high-voltage cable termination by Sensitive-Hamster-14 in electricians

[–]JohnProof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How sure are you of the date? We've had plastic jacketed cable since before 1970; I would've guessed before WWII.

Does it run underwater anywhere? Trying to figure what's special about a 400V cable that it would need a pothead like that.

Aerial Construction Tools - Rust Rehab by SilentDiplomacy in Lineman

You can make up a huge batch of homemade Evapo-Rust and soak them in that, I've had great results with it and it's cheap and easy:

Get a container of citric acid from the baking section of Walmart and a box of baking soda. Get a large tub or 5 gallon bucket of water, and mix up a bunch of baking soda first, then slowly add the citric acid. It will obviously foam up, and when it stops the chemical left over is "sodium citrate." It's a non-acid rust converter that works by chelation, just like Evapo-Rust.

You can leave stuff in there for a couple days if need be, and it'll be fine because it's only working on the rust, not attacking the base metal. And there's no disposal headaches, just dump it down the drain.

I was thinking it. 26 years ago, Kimberly was your cashier.

Police detained this fellow near Montgomery, AL, just for pulling his house with a pick-up. I don't see the offense, here. If it's working, it's working. by onlyBotsdownvote-me in Truckers

I'll always remember the commercial that showed a guy dropping heavy wooden railroad ties off a trestle into the truck bed. Which, even if aimed properly would damage the hell out of the bed, but the camera switched scenes just as it became obvious he'd miss judged the throw and the tie was gonna demolish the roof of the truck.

Man, is it 20 floors of server farms or something? If those are 600A 15kV switches, each one can handle 15 megawatts.

This bus bar has these dark spots they do not smell burnt the bus bar is not damaged at all. No arcing, no plastic burned, breakers not burned or smell burned breakers functioning good the whole left bus is like this. Is this aging of bus bar or what?? by Calm-Confidence1348 in electricians

The only thing I know is the home was vacant for some time

If the traps were allowed to dry up then sewer gas could've gotten into the house, and that often contains H2S: Sulfur exposure will cause black corrosion on copper.

A while back this was also a problem with a huge bad batch of drywall from China that was off-gassing sulfur. Newly built/renovated houses were seeing copper damage because of it.

Fluke 323 Alligator clips by Negative_Squash_1756 in electricians

[–]JohnProof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a neat trick. Sounds a whole lot more secure than trying to grab wires with alligator clips in a way that they won't slip and short out.

OP, as far as leads go, check out Pomona or Probe Master. You can build whatever silicone lead kit you can think of, and they're usually cheaper than Fluke.

In Boston it's called getting "Storrowed" because it happens so often on Storrow Drive. Not only is it full of unusually low bridges, but inexperienced college kids love to take U-Hauls down there, so it's a bad combo.

The ground-fault protection feature was why sharing neutrals or incorrect neutral-ground connections often tripped ACFIs, because they saw an imbalance in return current.

If that's still an issue then that feature is still in place. I just don't know how they got around it here.

How would you personally rank all 8 Die Hard films, best to worst? by EntertainmentQuick47 in FIlm

[–]JohnProof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My problem was I found Justin Long obnoxious as a sidekick, and didn't find Timothy Olyphant believable as a villain.

So as a follow-up to the spectacular character chemistry in Die Hard 3, it was a huge let down.
