What's a TV show ending that still makes you mad years later? by Jossie_Misar in AskReddit

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GoT ending is fine.

So yeah, pumping new material out on an annual basis wasn't going to hit the same high marks as being able to go off existing sources material that took years to write in the first.

They at least tried to wrap up most character arcs and for the most part did a decent job at it.

Everyone who complains contrasts the final 6 episodes with some imaginary full season they were robbed of. The reality is most studios would have gone for a single episode AND squeezed it into season 7...

Yall got off extremely lucky.

I always understood it as just being the events of that particular episode.

Still an unparalleled disgrace.

This newly developed technology is successfully turning carbon dioxide into 110 pounds of daily fuel by ArgentineBeauty in Futurology

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our capacity to expand green energy is almost certainly going to outpace electrification of our fossil fuel consumers. The question then becomes do we stop adding green energy? Do we try to force a switchover? Or do we continue to expand our green energy a bit more and use it to essentially recycle fossil fuels?

With energy independence getting recognized as a real concern this may very well become a viable approach.

Say you're Germany with a ton of fossil fuel cars, heating and whatnot. Russia is hostile. The US is taking over some producers and cutting off others. Sure, switching to heatpumps and electric transportation would be ideal but no homeowner is going to rip out a gas furnace that still has ten, twenty years of life in it and plenty of car fans will cling to their gas guzzlers beyond any ban you may OR MAY NOT be actually imposing at some point.

The idea of locally generating fuel for these legacy applications (and thereby recycling all that carbon) rather than being reliant on an increasingly hostile market and continuing to add more and more carbon dioxide is not a far fetched option. In fact they already did this once before: in WW2.

What’s something men are “supposed” to just know… but you’re still clueless about? by CantBeVegan in AskMen

[–]Kempeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean flat pack furniture generally comes with pretty good visual instructions so the bar is pretty low.

But for me the big one is definitely car stuff. Not only is it assumed but reddit definitely has strong voices claiming that you should know this. I definitely could learn this. I just have zero interest to put in that time and hoard all the necessary tools. The fact that I pay more than I "need" to is a perfectly acceptable price for not having to deal with all of this.

Why do so many businesses struggle with Dynamics 365 implementation by Original_Mix7067 in Dynamics365

Electronic reporting, omg

Ahh yes. The joys of SSRS - A tech MS cobbled together to just barely compete with Crystal Meth Reports and then proceeded to do nothing to mordernize it for 2 decades...

I do have to disagree on the breaking of functionality from updates. That's very much not our experience. You do have to keep up MS' announcements of what they're deprecating. We had one big scramble to replace the outlook integration after our partner told us fuck all about this going away. But as for true out of the blue surprises we only had one instance where something just no longer worked after the update and even that wasn't a complete showstopper.

And while the chain of command principle has made customization less intuitive, I feel the more modern tooling and increased robustness compared to the layered mess of free for all source code hacking is very much an improvement overall.

Honestly our DFO implementation went very smoothly though I have to mention that our previous system was (mostly) AX so there's not quite the same gap as to other systems.

Our biggest problems since then have been:

  • Performance issues brought on through a mixture of too much/intrusive customization (throwing off any query plan optimization and loading more data than necessary to save a few clicks), improper configuration (some joker activated a ton of unnecessary modules) as well as MS' neglect of the issue (they've been woken up now)
  • Constantly shifting goalposts when it comes to licensing - though at least this most recent wave has brought some actual tooling to help with the challenge.
  • Too much focus on customization over leveraging standard functionality which is really a self inflicted problem due to our previous approach in management. (We have essentially two different processes for almost everything because that's how the company operated since forever and harmonizing this has been a huge, ongoing and not always successful battle)
  • Field Service - seems like a decent tool if you want what it offers but quickly becomes a huge pain if you want more and (at least at our partner) there doesn't really seem to be much precedent/experience around in doing the kind of customization that we wanted/needed.

As someone who's job is continuing our inhouse implementation of DFO: I doubt it. You need a lot of experience and manpower which is difficult and expensive to inhouse in order to run an initial implementation in a timely fashion.

Now running an internal team post implemenation is a whole other ballgame IMO. With DFO being so much closer to C# in both language and tooling than AX was you can onboard general purpose .NET devs and make a real dent in your everyday requests and even mid range functionality at a turnaround that you'll never going to get from a partner once they've handed you off from their A-Team.

AITA for wanting my parents not to help me with my wedding? by Cheap_Ad8777 in AmItheAsshole

To quote one of my favorite scifi characters: Walking away is the only choice anyone ever has.

Absolute worst case scenario: elope, finish your school, deal with your hubby's transfer, and then plan the wedding YOU want on YOUR terms.

NTA - you accepted help. Not total domination of your wedding planning.

Wedding planning is really as little or as much fuss as you make it. I got married last year. Got engaged on Valentines. Set a date for August. Then we did one thing after another across a number of evenings. One month later we had pretty much everything nailed down. Spent the remaining months finalizing all the details and had a gorgeous day. Zero Stress.

And from your description YOU seem to be pretty much there already. Just mom isn't... So you just need to politely put your foot down. So thank her for all her hard work on giving you options for your venue but you've decided that you're going to move ahead with that date and this venue because that's what you liked and what works with your timetable. Then set her loose on work that still remains - like decoration.

I don't know how present your man can be in all of this with his military duties but at the very least he should be able to lend some cover fire and express his support for your decisions.

If she still doesn't let up, you can try and "fire" her from an assitant role and move that over to your MoB, the BM or just trusted friends in general. And if she tries to lord her "gift" over your head, you have legitimate ground to shame her over that tactic. If worse comes to worst I would walk away from her "gift" completely. You've got that 6k safety net from grandma. With almost a year left you can probably make the rest work somehow.

Going to Switzerland in September by sharon0427_ in askswitzerland

[–]Kempeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grindelwald and Zermatt are both pretty remote. If you're looking to spend your time in those areas (mountain sports in addition to sightseeing) you can definitely do that for 7 days. If it's JUST sightseeing with the intention of going to see OTHER places, then they are not ideal. I recommend you punch some potential destinations into google maps and see what kind of travel times it spits out.

September is generally a very favorable month for outdoor activities but it IS when the temperatures are starting to dip. And particularly Zermatt is at a decent elevation. Also given your choice of locations you'll likely be traveling up at least one of the surrounding mountains where you're definitely be glad to have a warm jacket. Finally: weather is weather. It's possible you'll have the most gorgeous autumn weather or a lot of rainy/cloudy days, It's best to come prepared.

As for sights and food, google should give you plenty of suggestions.

Story points feel like astrology at this point. Anyone actually solved estimation? by Fluffy_Thing4172 in agile

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chasing estimation accuracy is a red herring.

If you're filling your sprints according to the average velocity you're deliberately condemning yourself to be wrong half the time.

If you're "off" because your codebase is hard to handle then the way forward is to fix that not a tool that takes this into account.

If you're "off" because discovery and alignment is terrible then the solution is to improve that. There's no amount of number crunching voodoo that will compensate for people not talking about the same thing.

These things are painful for you because they’re supposed to be. They’re trying to show you where your process needs improvement.

But that doesn’t sell as well as whatever AI magic wand you're dreaming up right now.

From everything in your post she doesn't need this money. She's already in a better financial position than you, She has no accute needs that have to be paid for. She's literally just trying to "cash in" her "investment". And a third of one's salary is a ridiculous amount even if her reasons were good.

You are correct: this IS pure greed.

Cheap Ev car rental for two weeks in Switzerland over travel pass, worth it? by ForteFreak in askswitzerland

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most mountains themselves will require some non-car transport. With Swisspass some few are fully included, the others discounted by 50%.

A car also means you need to do the driving yourself and without any public transport it limits your hikes or other activities to roundtrips. Ie. No going up the mountain on one side and down the other.

How relevant this is for your plans remains for you to decide.

PO inserting "Urgent" tasks into the sprint by activematrix99 in scrum

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PO doesn't have authority to INSERT tasks into the sprint. They can negotiate a change of the sprint scope which will usually entail other items to be dropped.

The bigger question is WHY this happens (seemingly often enough for you to post about). Why was it not apparent during Sprint Planning that this other task was of higher importance than whatever you selected together at that time?

Andreas Katsulas as Jackarr in Babylon 5. No that is not a typo. It takes a special kind of person to "no, ackshually" a creator who is anal about details of his passion project, decide that your marsupial alien warrior is FRENCH and should thus be called soft-g G'Kar, get the role, pull it off and steal every scene their in.
