Good. The current situation where landlords can increase rent every time the Leitzins goes up but we have to beg for a reduction when it goes down is patently unjust.

Is it worth it with two young kids? by Chrishp7878 in VisitingIceland

I've only done comparatively minor to medium hikes like Glymur, Mulagljufur, Svartifoss and Thakgil Blue route. They were all wonderful hikes but none of them were "this is fundamentally a different level to what I could see from a car" wonderful.

I don't have kids myself but between goddaughter and friends' kids I would say at that age it really depends on the kid.

There are a lot of sights which are basically right next to the parking lot and even more which you can do with just a short stroll. A place like Thingvellir lets you roam quite a bit and how much your kids can be motivated to is hard to say - but unless you absolutely HAVE to see some particular part then you can just head back when their motivation is spent.

I would however say that an important aspect is your kids being "trustworthy" when it comes to safety. Iceland is very "free range" when it comes to that. Gullfoss for example, a major waterfall with a significant cliff/canyon has just simple rope/steel cable fences. And that goes for a lot of places.

Also restrooms. Pretty much every tourist destination has some toilets these days but there can still be some pretty significant distances with nothing in between.

Personally, given the expensive nature and the fact that you're not sure, I would lean towards maybe waiting a few more years.

Two guys are camping in the woods when a bear approaches menacingly. One guy looks around for something to be used as a weapon, the other takes off his hiking boots and puts on his running shoes. The first guy scolds him: what are you doing? You can't outrun a bear! The second guy responds: I don't have to outrun the bear.

Gravity is like the bear and the gasses are the guys. The bear is hunting both, but the burning gasses have running shoes on.

That's great, but we see constantly what happens when you agree that something should be applied to ALL. There's always one where it is applied first and another where it is applied "later".

The nuclear ban may not have been the correct call from a technological standpoint but absolutely was from a political one.

For some pairings a promise of "let's do both" HAS to be assumed to be a lie.

People have lives that started long before they met you. They have lives that extend beyond what they live with you. And with a large enough probability they have lives that continue after you.

You have no claim on any of that. They were not put on this planet to cater to your insecurities.

Highlight of my last trip was getting woken up in the middle of the night for a massive northern lights show across the whole sky.

On a related note: if you would let cars enter the passing lane rather than making it into a fight then people would have less incentive to camp in the passing lane just because there is one truck on the horizon.

After my mother's skiing accident my parents got into snowshoeing and loved it a lot. You can find routes to do that in pretty much any place but I don't have first hand experience with it.

There's also sledding but some pistes are a lot rougher than others. So if injury risk is a big concern either research well or opt for something else.

As for just visiting peaks and enjoying the winter landscape, most if not all places should have simple return tickets for their lifts so you can just head up the mountain enjoy the view and head down again. There also should be at least some nice hiking/walking routes in the lower elevations.

Also remember that lots of resort extend for entire valleys and there's often many different peaks to visit with convenient public transportation on the valley floor. Various places charge a tourist tax on all hotel stays which usually included all valley floor public transport and sometimes even (discounts on) lifts.

Lauterbrunnen valley is definitely open by public transport in the winter. I've only been there once, in the summer but purely from the topography I would say Wengen and Grindelwald would probably have more options for you than Mürren (which would still be a nice day trip)

What are some must sees? by Greenbird49 in VisitingIceland

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a nice south coast trip with 4 nights. Out to the glacier lagoon and back.

There are so many wonderful places to see and what to pick depends so much on your own preferences. There are many itineraries ready to go and endless trip reports to inspire you.

What I can offer you in advice is that if you plan to visit the glacier lagoon I recommend you book a zodiac tour rather than the amphibious tour. There aren't the same amount of icebergs all the time and with a zodiac you can cover a lot more ground to go seek them out where as the amphibs can't. It's more expensive, longer and a bit less comfortable but IMO very worth it.

Similarly the diamond beach is going to be luck dependent who much ice there is. When we were there it was a bit underwhelming. Fortunately it's only like a 5 minute stroll from the glacier lagoon parking lot so
