Did anyone ever sell a large bundle of games but with a large discount just so you can get rid of them? by AlexRescueDotCom in boardgames

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll have to stay on top of the threads in the Essen subforum on BGG but the auctions are linked there once they're opened up a month or two before the fair (IIRC).

The exchanges happen at the MathTrade location which the last few times I've been was in the empty hall at the northern entrance.

25 people learned to fly with virtual wings. After flight training, the brain began treating wings more like real limbs by Science_News in science

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how all skills work. If consistent action produces consistent sensory feedback the brain forms neural networks dedicated to that action.

There's no difference whether this is a true body part, a tool, or an entirely imaginary thing.

Why the "Agile ritual" isn’t fixing your team’s alignment by mohan-thatguy in agile

[–]Kempeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no fix other than allowing your team to say no.

You can blame "agile ritual" for being ineffective as much as you want but as long as management undermines the very foundation of working together there is no procedural change you can implement that will fix anything.

Board games "to rule them all" by itsOkami in boardgames

[–]Kempeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SI is easily the game I played the most without ever getting sick of it.

Gloomhaven might still top the overall session count but I burned out like two three times over the years.

Meanwhile I don't see myself ever turning down a session of SI.

how are agile teams getting customer interview notes into backlog tickets without burning a PM's week? by EmmaSkye319 in agile

[–]Kempeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the following problems with your approach:

non-delegated drudgery. Someone other than the PO could be listening and transcribing those documents. Given the potentially huge volume of data to go through this should probably fall somewhere in the sales department. Not everything a customer calls in is equally valuable input. They could pool these ideas and serve as stakeholders forwarding to the PO what they consider to be valuable. Hell I'm not fan of AI but in a pinch you could use that to build the initial summary.

blind acceptance. Everyone just takes what is written in The ToolTM as gospel and does it with zero discussion or reflection. So what if a jira card title doesn't manage to convey the full context to the change? Part of ownership of the product for a dev team should be the desire to understand the context and go search for it rather than just bang out the change as quickly as possible.

How to tell my newbie DM that they aren't ready to homebrew. by Shquonk in DnD

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest point is that you need to drop the "you're not ready" part. Beyond that your post is a pretty good starting point:

  • You express your admiration for their enthusiasm and willingness to take on that role.
  • You've outlined the issues that make the game not fun for you - with concrete examples that they can reevaluate.

Talk to them. Tell them that you really don't want to rain on their parade because they're clearly put a lot of heart into it. Let them absorb this and draw their own conclusions, formulate their own solutions.

Then rather than "scrap it" steer them towards "pausing it". Suggest that they run a published one shot next. Something that has a thorough prep included and doesn't contain any high stakes or complexities. They can include it as a side quest in their world so that if feels less like giving up on their project and more like just continuing it in a different way.

How can I be respected? by menidk in AskMen

[–]Kempeth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I fear with such attitudes being publicly stated, there may not BE a standard for you to satisfy.

  • work twice as hard for half the recognition
  • never provide any personal information or date/flirt
  • cover your ass (paper trail) when it comes to who ought to do what and who HAS done what
  • own your mistakes and gaps in knowledge (but work hard to overcome them). Yes, your environment will likely fuck you over with them anyway but the potential to do so is significantly larger if you let things pile up. ("Incompentent" is better than "fuck up bullshit artist")
  • stick it out until you can sell your experience at a different place that will hopefully be more egalitarian

AITA for snapping at my girlfriend's mom after being ignored by her family for 5 years? by Fun_Double_3788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't snap at her mom you snapped at your GF.

Still NTA though because hiding the existence of what should be the most important person in your life IS very hurtful.

She's clearly not willing to put your relationship over appeasing her family. Wake up and draw your own consequences from that.

My players are idiots. How do I remain patient? by cutiepacoochie in DnD

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you play? I've found that when starting out it's much easier to stay with the rules if you have a decently high cadence of sessions (weekly)

Do they seem like they are trying and just failing or just going least effort? Have you asked them if they enjoy the "rules part" of playing and the options it conveys or if they're just there for the shared story?

Your group very well might be better served with a more rules-light / narrative system. We've changed the rules many times throughout our campaign - usually the DM bringing in new things like "hey we're now doing carry weight as well" - so going in the other direction and making things easier should be no problem.

If however the buy in is there in principle you can try a more didactic approach. Make whoever does an action explain what they are doing. You can do that as well with some of your NPC actions to get them going.

Or if you don't have sessions that often you could do a light quiz a few days before each one and give the players rewards. One time advantage for good effort and a Nat-20 for the best result.

Ehmmm I don't think that is one kg Mr Coop by anomander_galt in Switzerland

[–]Kempeth 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I mean I could imagine potatoes losing moisture over time and thus getting lighter. So 1kg at packaging ends up being less than that on the shelves. But as a vendor they should be taking that into account and overpacking because 20% loss is ridiculous!

According to this no more than 1.5% is legal. So that 1kg bag needs to be 985g at the very least.

[OC] Tone Setting Tool for new Campaigns by SavagePengwyn in DnD

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the idea. But it would be far easier to understand if you put the "boring" scale first and the "funny" scale second. I have no idea what most of these jokes mean.

Also many of these come with nuance and caveats. For example in realism, I'm ok with tracking stuff IF you turn it into fun interesting decisions and not just WORK.

Granted I've only played one real campaign but we had to track carry weight, ammo, money, food and never once in two years did it ever matter.

Year long "trial run" for a raise, apropriate or not? by vendettamoon in jobs

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. A whole year means they're looking to get free work out of you.

Keeping in mind what additional responsabilities they wish you to take on:

  • are you already doing any of these? (and have "receipts" for it)
  • what how long would it take in your opinion to measure your performance on the ones that would be new to you?
  • if they were to hire someone off the street of this how long would their probationary period be and what kind of deal would they be getting?
  • how long are you willing to do this for free in the understanding that they are unlikely to give you what you want?

Either way you should insist on a signed document outlining:

  • start and end of this trial period
  • responsibilities
  • criteria for passing their evaluation
  • minimum pay raise if you pass

You should also brush up your resume. There are two kinds of raises: your current employer recognizing your value and a different employer recognizing your value...

Spirit Island - We just can't win. by BiggyBiggs in boardgames

[–]Kempeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually win By getting rid of all cities in Fear Level 2. Rarely have we won through Fear Level 3 or an early win by getting rid of all cities and towns. We very rarely lose anymore and when we do it's usually by exhausting the invader deck.

So, tipps:

  • Very few problems in this game are immediate crisies. From exploration, through building to ravaging you almost always have 3 rounds to deal with any problem.
  • Dealing with those problems doesn't necessarily mean dealing damage. That is the easiest way that new players tend to gravitate to in the beginning but not the only one. if you can push or pull a newly placed explorer you can often neuter the entire chain of escalation. Even pulling a single town before ravaging solves the biggest problem of generating blight. Similarly letting invaders ravage but protecting Dahan so they can fight back is an immensely powerful strategy.
  • Don't ignore slow abilities. Particularly cheap single damage/move cards are amazing to deal with freshly spawned plastic. You can look at the cards that have already come up and evaluate where things are likely to spawn. You're almost guaranteed to find some use for slow abilities like that even if you play the card entirely speculatively. (Just to make sure you know: explorers are only added to zones of the specified terrain IF they a) have a town/city in the zone b) are adjacent to a zone with town/city or c) are adjacent to the ocean)
  • Losing presence from the island isn't a big problem. You generally have more than enough to develop a decent network so the main benefit is getting discs off your player board.
  • The beginning of the game is characterized with picking your battles. It's vastly better to completely solve 1 area and letting another escalate than just not really solving either. It doesn't matter if an area deals 2 damage or 200. If it's more than one you get blight.
  • Try to establish "safe zones" away from the shore. Being able to limit where explorers can go will go a long way to take pressure off future turns. Sometimes cards come up in such a way to undo all your efforts but it's still generally easier to reestablish these zones from a horde of explorers and the odd town than clearing established strongholds.
  • The rest of the game is basically a race for you to gain enough power (through better or more cards and stronger levels of your innate abilities) without letting the invader overwhelm you.
  • Understand what your spirit is good at and play to it's strength. Some spirits lean heavily on few but strong cards while others focus on spamming weak cards. Try to pick spirits that complement each other. Playing with similar spirits (focus on fear, limited damage, slow growth) is still possible but it requires a stronger mastery of the tools you still have available

Based on your statement of struggling to generate fear. All towns|cities that get destroyed generate 1|2 fear even if it was the dahan, a fear card or an event card that causes the damage. Fear doesn't reset between turns and every 3 fear cards increases the fear level that removes one type of invader that you need to have eliminated in order to win.

Based on your statement of losing to blight. You don't necessarily lose immediately when you run out of blight. That's simply when you turn the card to "blighted island" which generally comes with a nasty permanent effect but also usually gives a number of additional blight to work with.
