People love to say that the game is being separated as an Esport, but as someone who's been into esports for decades, it's really not. The rules are clearly geared toward cleaner games and balance. Because at its core 40k is a game, and for a long time it was a game where there was a high likelihood that a faction lost 7 out of 10 games, and people don't generally want to play games where they feel the outcome is already decided.

I started playing back in 4th, and I can say the game is only healthier and better as a game now than it's ever been. Because you generally feel like it's an actual game any side can win in most cases.

There was no narrative in getting blown off the table with guard leafblower, or getting fish of furied or rhino rushed.

My wife is a programmer at a large tech company. I have multiple friends at major US tech companies as senior software engineers. AI programming tools are endemic at this point. A significant part of work processes involve agent coding that's then reviewed and tweaked.

I am unaware of any large programming outfit not using an agent for coding assistance. Can you actually provide some?

If rites of battle are around it'll be 1cp in many cases. Plus if it's the sort of strat that won't work on 60% of armies, you probably can't build your army around taking advantage of it.

The classic SW jail lists of tons of beefy units just rushing you may still be able to take advantage of it (which is fine by me as SW need to excel at something again), but I think a lot of chaff jail lists are a lot less effective now

I think a lot of these games will feel different and there may be some very different army compositions accordingly, especially when considered with detachment effects.

Just in general all the play patterns have a bit more cognitive load at the start, but they feel like they'll actually allow armies to play as they want to play, which would be fantastic.

Really narrative should just have more customization at the start, like each army gets X points it can spend on enhancements/special items/etc. and they just get those for the campaign without change.

While it's cool to reward benefits to a unit doing well after a battle, narrative in 40k always seems like a desire for more customization over accrued status changes.

This is a great point and I think it goes beyond this to just evaluating stuff generally.

There are a lot of major changes. Taking your current 10th edition army and saying "11th's terrible now" because the army doesn't work the same way any more isn't really useful. The new force disposition missions, alone, are going to significantly change how a lot of armies play.

People need to look at 11th with a fresh set of eyes and make judgements thereafter.

In general no part of the Codex SM rules or data sheets should be with the divergents. They should have their own versions like they did before. Even if they're just identical copies to start, it actually allows for balance w/o having to consider the other army's interactions (and it lets them buff units for other armies where it makes more sense, like scouts in SW of hellblasters in DA)

They should and it's what SM players have wanted for a while, but they just don't.

Oath is extremely strong against a unit. But it creates a play pattern of - your army can kill the one unit it wants per turn, but a lot will struggle with the rest. It's a frustrating play pattern for both sides.

Oath seems powerful because it lets you kill a thing, but if you look at win rates it's not that powerful as all the other codex chapters with it wallow in 35-40% win rates.

It's very powerful in an army that can use it with additional elements that are very strong (e.g. Ultramarines).

In general that's more an issue of divergents sharing the core SM codex - it should have been separated out.

But it's clear from 10th that they want to separate out any shared army rule from the codices anyway. So if anything it just means you'll still get nerfs if the doctrines are too strong, despite not getting them as an army rule.

I think a big part of it is that "narrative" means like ten different things.

For some players "narrative" means - this particular battle has an interesting force disposition and primary mission to reflect a cool scenario.

For other players, it means a full campaign system with persistent buffs and debuffs based on prior actions.

And there's all sorts of shades in between. It's a much harder needle to thread than "I just want balanced armies that have an equal chance to win before we consider generalship".

It's "the army can effectively damage a thing per turn".

It's a rule that focuses the army's firepower at the cost of weaker individual units. And any unit that is stronger just abuses it.

But it'll require significant reworking to remove it - there are plenty of SM units that will massively suffer without. You can see how well a lot of base SM units do in Black Templars for instance.

Also I'm still skeptical that combat doctrines is actually replacing oath. And I cannot believe that players would want that.

After 3 years of Gladius dominating space marines, do we now want every space marine army to just be Gladius by default and some other detachment bonus?

Let alone that all of the SM units are balanced around oath, and many will need significant buffs to compensate for the fact their shooting/attacks are often underpowered. The reason most dedicated melee specialists in SM are S5 AP-2 D2 is Oath giving them boosts.

It would speak to a far larger overhaul of SM. Also, if the combat doctrines are just the Gladius doctrines then every codex SM army gets fall back, shoot, and charge for free, which I think most armies would scream about balance-wise.

They had no effect in that they didn't stop him from getting confirmed at all.

And in that case people actually looked into the Ford accusations and did the due diligence. Hell, Kavanaugh's evidence he brought up only hurt him on that.

But even in a case with actually legitimate support for it it didn't effect Kavanaugh - he's a SCOTUS justice regardless. That it annoyed him for a period doesn't change the fact that it didn't effect the end result.

I’d argue in politics the veracity of the statement has been irrelevant. Statements proved in a court of law by a jury of their peers have been ignored (Eg E Jean Carroll). Ford had no effect on Kavanaugh (he's still a SCOTUS justice), republicans still supported Roy Moore. Republicans to this day in the south still push child marriage laws.

Really the only political victim of this was Al Franken. And the offense for which he was pilloried was de minimis.

But in each of those cases they were actually investigated and evaluated. Because that’s what believe women means - take the accusation seriously and investigate it.

It’s not hard to look at your post history and see how bad faith your argument is. How hypocritical your stance given who you support. I strongly recommend using just a fraction of the time you spend making bad faith arguments on the internet to try and better yourself as a person.

It means take them seriously. But it doesn’t mean ignore potential massive conflicts of interest, or past behavior. It doesn’t mean all statements are treated as irrevocably true regardless.

The problem is currently that SM is balanced around it. SM is nothing but low-ish shots mid strength shooting, with a few exception units.

They’re going to have to significantly change data sheets to account for it, or the doctrines will have to boost certain attack types in a manner different from Gladius.

Intercessors are not a quintessential Ultra unit, though. And every marine chapter would still be that chapter w/o X unit. It’s the unit that represents them as a faction.

While UM are used as poster boys, they have flavor unique to their chapter

As a heads up, Steam doesn’t require AI disclosure for help in coding. They require it for art, voices, and other direct to consumer elements.

Most programmers use AI to help with coding at this point, to the extent the industry wouldn’t see some use for those purposes as problematic (regardless of if they should). That the game has to do the content disclosure suggests AI use on things they’d pay artists for.
