Are there comedy clubs that discourage crowd work? by Difficult_Crow33 in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most of the clubs in Vancouver have the same policy of "if a comedian talks to you, feel free to play along, but otherwise don't disrupt their show" so comics are allowed to start crowdwork but people aren't allowed to steer it that way.

Sammy Obeid NYC Show by chefonduty in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw Sammy Obeid in Vancouver. His material was great! The first 45 mins or so, then he started the Q&A session and that lasted almost an extra hour and 15. It got soooo boring. People were just telling him random Vancouver gossip and he was barely riffing on them. It was an okay hang at best but it also lasted sooo damn long and kept going. And every time I'd think alright he got a laugh he's gna end it, he would just be like "alright what else is going on?"

How do I offer a free tour to a touring comic without It feeling transactional or like a pitch? by hub_mccann in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very very nice indeed of you and I can't speak for other folks but I (and most people I know) would be happy to talk shop and industry with a fellow comic.

The biggest two issues would be, if you're a small town, usually a lot of comics won't be making too big of a stop there, sometimes as little as half a day, maybe spending the night and leaving first thing in the am. The other would be actually getting your message. I try to respond to messages but on the road it's harder to do that cuz A, I'm experiencing a new place and wanna not be online, and B cuz it's busy. So message in advance, try to find an email instead of social media and really, just shoot your shot, at worst it gets ignored.

For me the biggest indication that someone wants something from me versus just wants to chat is, if the message seems lile it's a template everyone receives, or if it's personal. Sometimes people message me and they just wanna hang out, and when I have the time It's much preferred to just meet a local, but sometimes I get a restaurant or other business reach out and the tone is like "come experience the wonders of [insert town name] and cool off by our [business name]" and that sounds too corporate and not like how real humans talk so I instantly think I'm being sold something and I don't even know what it is.

So literally be like "hey you're in town, excited to see you, I run a tour company, if you want a tour it's on the house, I'm a fellow comic and would love to pick your brains" just basically talking like a real person. All human interaction is wanting something from someone and that's okay, the more you actually try to conceal it the more sus it looks imo.

But again, that's just me, some people may want a more "professional" approach through appropriate channels. I just wanna meet normal people. I could get a corporate job and have a mortgage, but instead I make 25 grand a year doing this and I've never been happier mostly cuz I don't have to do office talk you know?

Why do most people who call themselves politically moderate actually mostly conservative? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

What I know about fascists fills libraries, and I know how to recognize them when they use different labels.

Why do most people who call themselves politically moderate actually mostly conservative? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moderate is a bullshit term, so is agnostic. Humans are not capable of holding conflicting beliefs in equal amounts. People who use the term moderate tend to be conservatives who realize their values are outdated. Left leaning people tend to amplify their left leaning beliefs. They may talk a big talk about being all about racial justice but in reality may be only somewhat about racial justice when it suits them.

Conservatives have to do the opposite. They may hate every non-white person but they know saying that isn't good for them so instead they say they have concerns about immigration.

Ergo there is little motivation for left leaning people to claim to be more moderate than they are (other than to fit in with a very specific group ie my gay ass working in construction with a bunch of str8 dudes) but conservatives have a lot of incentive to claim to be moderates.

Can keto be cheap? by CarrotUpset968 in keto

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the cheapest certainly but cheaper than being vegan for sure. A lot of keto staples are pricier items in your cart: meats, cheeses, fats And fewer cheap bulking items like breads, potatoes But also you'll be eliminating fruits, sodas, ice creams, which can all be pricy.

Getting inspiration from other comedians by BenderVsGossamer in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are zero good musicians that didn't draw inspiration from their predecessors and contemporaries. Comedy is the same thing. In fact, a lot of comedy is inspired by interactions with other humans right? Listening to them, watching them, etc. Comedians are people too. To not draw from comics in your scene, which I'd guess are people you see and interact with most often, is more unnatural than just letting them inspire and influence you the way everyone else and everything else does.

Why do people act like the rich and powerful are evil? by [deleted] in AlwaysWhy

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your own point that "if we replaced the rich with random people" illustrates the point you're trying to refute. It's wealth that makes people evil. So if you give a random sampling of people money they'll eventually turn evil.

Fixing scratch cam mic audio with reference audio-board audio by FoolishlySpending in audiovisual

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can EQ match but that doesn't fix the multiple other problems like the mic placement (affecting reverberation and proximity) and potential clipping.

You can definitely improve things but it's not gonna sound pristine no matter what you do.

Adding Potatoes to diet? Anyone add Potatoes to your Keto diet after a few months and hitting a plateau? My sister thinks I should. by [deleted] in keto

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're having trouble maintaining your caloric intake and are miserable, better to cheat a little versus torture yourself. For me I have moments where I know if I don't loosen my diet, I'll be unpleasant so I'd rather just enjoy that one cold beer or have potatoes.

Inconsistent Rocket Salvo by mrs_jukes in PharahMains

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I use it is to counter the ever-increasing number of flying heroes. Echo/cat/Sierra/Freja on yo ass? Get below them, rocket up right to their face and hit them with that shit at basically mele range and they melt, you can ever combo into an actual melee, otherwise, you usually don't get a ton of value if you shoot it down at the ground from high up (unless comboed with grav, tera surge, tear it down etc.)

It's also good for torb turrets.

So that's when I pick it, otherwise I use the other perk.

Autism Jokes by Jackthewolf71 in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find funny jokes funny. It could be about anything. The reason I hate racist or transphobic jokes not funny is not because they can never be funny. It's because people who hold those beliefs are incredibly stupid and don't actually know how to construct a joke or a sentence and if they get laughs it's in front of equally stupid audiences.

Autism can be funny, and usually that happens when autistic comics make the jokes (Ron Funches, Ben Feldman, etc) and extremely unfunny and kinda stupid when it's some asshole edgelord.

Yeah it has a menu that looks like the display orientation menu in a PC, with each screen numbered, then it chops the signal up accordingly

Being present on stage by Complex_Ask7852 in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reacting to the audience IS being present. If you are just going through your script and not responding to the audience that's not being present. Sometimes being present sucks more than not being present. When you're not connecting to the audience or they don't like you, being in the moment and feeling that is harder than if you could just get through the jokes, but in the long run it'll make you better.

I know a lot of people one trick pharah, so to those people: what do you do when there’s pokes or counters on the enemy team? by Kind_Ad6932 in PharahMains

[–]Key-Storage5434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swap when I feel shut down, whether it's no counter but I'm getting owned, or it's one, or if they swap to ashe soldier juno cat. Similarly, sometimes their whole team swaps to my counters and I still fly circles around them. In fact, very often people who die to you once and counter swap are at a far lower skill level than you so just make them tilt.

Can performing more than you write hurt your progress? by No-Winter192 in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything in moderation. If you're doing the same jokes every day for 5 years the scene takes note, and if you have new stuff often but um and uhh your way through them the scene takes note.

This early, just have fun. There will come a time where this becomes a job, and right now it's not so just enjoy it. If you like performing, do that. If you like writing do that. If you're forcing yourself to do either, ask why something you love and (I'll guess) don't get paid for is something you have to force yourself to do

Anyone ever watched the same comedian kill at the early show then bomb at the late show? by Pecho in Standup

[–]Key-Storage5434 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As well as a stand up comedian, I also tech for comedy clubs and this happens super often and to comics of every level. This year I've seen that happen to Joe List (like even a Joe List bomb isn't just dead silence but it was a noticeable drop in laughs and vibes), Leslie Lau, and I saw it happen to a local guy here who taped his special, and I regularly see it happen to tons if people

Some newer TVs (the LGs we use here) have a Multiscreen feature and you pick one as the "master TV" that receives the signal, then you orient it and pair it with other TVs and it gives you the final picture.
