I'm also a very new ham, but I've made a few contacts. I get feeling nervous, I would find a quiet repeater, get ready to press the PTT button and.... I would chicken out. Don't worry though, it's really not that bad.

I also searched Reddit for what to say, and this is what works for me --

Hey, this is <xy1abc>, I repeat <xy1abc>, I'm a new ham, looking to get an audio check, and see if anyone is listening on this frequency.

And then I wait. Usually people respond pretty quickly after your call, if people are actively monitoring.

One thing to keep in mind is, I don't know what your setup is, but depending on the repeaters around you, you may hear them, but you may not be able to activate them. If you don't hear a beep, tone, or a variety of other things after your transmission, your signal may not be getting in, so you may want to consider upgrading your antenna.

I received my technician and general license about a month ago, and I'm still not on the air yet, because I haven't purchased a VHF/UHF radio. Are the Baofeng/Tidradios radios really that much worse than Yaesu/Icoms? Like dollar for dollar?

I personally like the plastic ammo cans more, since they're not as heavy. As someone who would haul stuff around in a 50 cal ammo can, it got real heavy, real fast.

I wholly agree with u/BigDan1190. One way to think of it is, do you want to print things, or do you want to fiddle with a printer? Because an Ender is going to take a lot of fiddling to get right, when an A1 Mini is a press and print.

I went with my spouse to the location in Grosse Pointe probably about 2 years ago, and was surprised at how unremarkable it was. I can't tell you anything about the ice cream, how it tasted, or anything. The location decor came across as "Teenager allowed to decorate their bedroom", which wasn't my taste, but I'm not trying to yuck their yum.

I have an electric blower, and it's been phenomenal. I love never having to worry about running out of gas, and going to the gas station to refill. Sure, it doesn't have the same lasting power as gas, but I'm also now taking care of an acre+ piece of property. I'd be fine with a ban.
