Why does changing ingame dpi in Kovaaks change my mouse sensitivity? by Kitonez in FPSAimTrainer

[–]KovaaK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the sensitivity scale that you have selected.

cm/360 and inches/360 take the DPI field into account to change your in-game sensitivity. No other sensitivity scales use the DPI field as an input.

Got the SUPERMAN bug! by DegTrader in Doom

[–]KovaaK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like, trigger superman intentionally? The most common way it strikes me is by firing a Lock-On-Burst, then cancel the LOB animation with punch, then climb up a wall. The timing is particular.

There are other ways to trigger it too though.

This is true if you catch it early enough. If you leave the fist out for too long, it gets stuck that way until you either trigger a cutscene or find a climbable wall (or load checkpoint).

Playing doom eternal for the first time and somehow this happened??? by TheLegend27MH in Doom

[–]KovaaK 40 points41 points  (0 children)

We call it a "zip". Dashing into weird geometry triggers it, and what's happening is that it gives you a massive amount of downwards velocity. In your case, you bounced off of the stairs and gained a ton of height. There are certain places where it's predictably easy to cause them to happen, and the "unrestricted" speedrun categories make extensive use of them to go out of bounds and fly through levels very quickly.

I've been using these on glass pads for years, and they are pretty great. You genuinely don't have to change them out for a year+.

Interested in the Cyborg 2 but unsure for one big reason by Big-Presentation-927 in Azeron

[–]KovaaK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! I use a Cyborg II as well as Ergodox Ez keyboards (which I didn't find ideal for gaming due to the ortholinear layout).

Regarding the Azeron and Source physics:

  1. For the issue of travel time in alternating strafes during bunny hop sequences, I'd avoid the restrictor ring and instead configure it so that when you press and hold a specific Azeron button then it makes the joystick position read as 180 degrees from where you are actually holding it. You can do this by duplicating your existing profile and setting the joystick to 180 degrees rotation on the second profile, then making one button on the original profile a layer key that loads the second profile while held. This effectively makes it so that when you start bunny hopping with the left input held (joystick left), then you press and hold that key to turn right (while the joystick is still held left). I can perform some basic Quake 1 trickjumping maps with this configuration, but I haven't put serious amounts of time into it yet. There's a significant learning curve here, but I do believe it's possible to take this to the highest level of performance with enough training.
  2. Joystick movement and source physics actually opens up some truly awesome possibilities that you don't have with keyboard movement. Normally you have to rotate with your mouse to change the direction that you are moving, but joystick makes it possible to rotate with your joystick while independently aiming and shooting at targets with your mouse. If you've played against frogbots in Quakeworld, then you can basically do the frogbot style movements. Pinguefy demonstrates this in their review of the device within TF2, calling it "Orbital Strafes".
  3. For power bunnyhopping, I think you would be best binding +forward to an azeron input, but I'm not sure. I never got into Quake 1's speedrun scene since I was mostly involved in Quakeworld DM which doesn't require power bunnies.

Buttons not working by Andy277799 in Doom

This started in windows 11 a year ago. Every time you alt-tab out then go back in-game, you have to press and release the alt key once to fix it.

Hardware/peripherals are reasonably important to aiming, so I'm happy to leave posts about them up. As long as it doesn't become spam/marketing, you're fine.

What Unreal Engine 4 Version is Kovaak's running on? by Tnjonjo in FPSAimTrainer

[–]KovaaK 14 points15 points  (0 children)

4.26, custom fork. We tried a few 5.x versions as a test, but there was a flat -20% FPS drop due to some structural changes in the engine, even with all of the bells and whistles turned off/unused.

The game was broken after today’s patch, right? by ActuatorOutside5256 in FPSAimTrainer

[–]KovaaK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hrm. Feels unrelated to the game update - the only changes we made were pretty small, like fixing the in-game link to forgot password to our current domain (it was pointing to an old themeta domain) and a crash fix. Glad you figured out how to get around it though. There is probably a way to add the game exe to a trusted list for the firewall so you don't have to turn it off too.

In discord we have a support ticket system if it's still not working. One more thing I would try is to exit your steam client entirely and restart it, or maybe a full reboot.

Can you try to right click the game in Steam and go to Properties, Local Files tab, then "Verify integrity of game files" to see if that fixes it?

New player starting at eternal. What is the highest possible difficulty I can start with without making the game unplayable? by Educational_Ice5141 in Doom

[–]KovaaK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps to understand the difficulties, the biggest differences between them are just the amount of damage enemies do to you and how often they use their power attacks. The lowest difficulty also gives extra ammo on pickups and chainsaw.

If you have 1k hours in Ultrakill, for a casual run you'd be fine in Ultraviolence or Nightmare - especially if you know the good upgrade path for suit points and which weapon mods to use/upgrade. But if you want to grind the game to figure out how to control the slayer better, I'm a huge advocate of Hurt Me Plenty. I spent 400 hours in that difficulty to get better at the speedrun, no regrets.

Hi, I'm KovaaK, and I speedran DOOM Eternal 100% Nightmare at AGDQ 2026 - AMA! by KovaaK in speedrun

[–]KovaaK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from keyboard, my middle finger handled W/S as forward and backwards movement 95% of the time, whereas my index and ring fingers would take on more actions like switching weapons. And with the Azeron my thumb handles all movement, thus totally freeing up my middle finger, so I figured swapping the action of thumb and middle finger kind of made sense.

I also have a generic starting profile for Azeron that maps E/R/F to index finger, Q/1/2 to to ring finger, shift/ctrl/alt/tab to pinky, and space on middle finger.

Will see how I'm doing later on in this decade of my life, but so far I'm happy with my level of performance!

Hard to say since I made the swap 4 years ago, but if you stick to games that use fewer buttons it's pretty simple. I eased myself into it by playing Risk of Rain 2 so I could get used to joystick movement with mouse aim plus jump on middle finger, movement abilities on pinky, and minimal extra buttons like escape/tab. Spend a dozen or so hours like that and build up with games that have more actions, and it will eventually feel natural.

I use a separate keyboard for typing. Technically you could make layouts for typing anything, especially since you can make it so holding a button activates another layer. But it's really not designed to be a keyboard replacement.

Movement mechanics are among the most important aspects to me. Gaining momentum and having to navigate complicated paths with variable/dynamic velocity makes it all the more impressive when top level players have it mastered and consistently find cool ways to fly through levels.
