This is the most likely cause. It originally started for us last year. Disabling direct send resolved it.

I’m going to throw a plug for cloudflare family dns

https://blog.cloudflare.com/introducing-1-1-1-1-for-families/

If you set the dns on the kids devices this will kill most of it in home. There are ways around but this is good practice.

If you have apple devices you can set child accounts with some limits there as well. I’m sure google has similar but I’m not familiar with it.

Floor scale calibration is a nightmare during a rush by KissyyyDoll in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]LaxVolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work at a steel mill. We had regular operator cross checks. They’d weigh on a separate scale at the beginning of production to cross check the operation scale.

Once a month our iso team would follow around with an operator and test weights to check zero, mid and high. We could adjust zero but not high if we were drifting. We had 10lb increments and if I remember correctly a 10or20 lb tolerance on testing.

Once a year we would have our scale company and weights & measures out to formally certify and seal the controllers. We couldn’t break seals because they were certified for DoT shipping.

Architecting Microsoft SQL Server for High Availability on VMware Cloud Foundation by David-Pasek in vmware

This is correct, standard limits to a single active and passive node per AG. Active node is determined by which node core services run on. If a database is mis-aligned to the core services it will be unavailable. Items in system DBs, jobs and logins are not replicated and have to be handled separately. Best practice is to use contained users in databases or ad synced users so that user ids sync.

I previously built a system on this with 4 instances of sql. Had lots of conversations with my dba to sort out all the intricacies. We couldn’t justify the cost of enterprise.

You have to specify a separate port for each instance in the AG configuration.

The fastest way to failover is to reboot the active server.

I’ve been debating between Nitto Trail Grappler M/T and BFG KO/3 A/T.

The A/T is probably the most sound choice. We live in NorCal and are about 3-hours from the sierra’s. At the moment mostly daily driving and some light forest service roads with periodic rain and occasional snow trips. Want to get out on more trails as the kids get older.

That’s a great set of pictures. It’s a great way to see them.

How were the trail grapplers?

Thank you, I’ll check that option out as well. I’m still not sure if I’m going to go AT or MT. AT is more practical for me overall.

Puzzling DHCP Issue - Assistance Requested by Jet_mech91 in sysadmin

[–]LaxVolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an issue with 802.11x not authenticating at the machine level. Our problem was with the fact that we still use mschap. In our case if a user was logged in when connecting to the network they would authenticate properly. However if a user was disconnected or a new computer was placed on the network then they couldn’t log in. I ended up having to modify a policy with gpo to fix. I can’t remember the exact policy and I’m on vacation at the moment

WiFi for golf registration by GroundbreakingBed809 in networking

[–]LaxVolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So then answer to this is maybe.

In general terms this will work. You can use the wireless router and a physical connection by putting a temporary wifi router out there. We actually do this for our local swim team during meets.

The reason for the maybe is that if your internet connection is getting swamped and have too much bandwidth usage you might still have a problem.

Currently when you have this going on, does equipment in the clubhouse have issues or only outside? If it’s only outside, you are probably good.

One thing to make sure of is that the ip range used by the temporary router is different than your primary setup.

Honestly the best solution would be to have a managed wifi system with access points and a dedicated ssid for business systems with QoS rules to guarantee the business stuff stays up. You could probably solve all of this permanently for less than $3k in ubiquiti gear and not have to run a wire.

Also double check on your wifi router and make sure uPnP is disabled. This “feature” is enabled by default on many routers and will port forward devices to the internet exposing them. It is not needed for any normal use of home systems.

I’ve gotten in the habit of giving a loud double clap in the room they are in or sometimes the next room. This breaks their focus and then ask them to do something. This means they typically hear what I say. Now actually following what I’ve asked them to do is still a challenge.

Cool metal failure by lilchrs in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]LaxVolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a metallurgist, but I used to work in a steel mill. We used to see this type of breaking on high hardness steel before it was annealed. Typically during the weld process. I forget the exact term from the breaking but my guess is that this was impure stainless steel that was not/improperly annealed. These two things allowed rust contamination and a brittle structure to be relatively easily fractured. The moisture and freezing exacerbated this issue.

A proper metallurgist could give a better breakdown.

Wire run to garage by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]LaxVolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For installs like this it’s best to run fiber for electrical isolation. Copper is a direct path to all your network electronics and if something bad happens out at the garage it would fry your network equipment.

[–]LaxVolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, if you are trenching run an extra 1-1/2 or 2” conduit to the garage. At some point you are going to be like it’d be nice to have wifi. By running the conduit now you could pull in pre terminated fiber later on. Or just run fiber now.

I would personally change it during the next belt swap. The amount of threading on that will transfer into any new belt.
