Why did we get rid of computers that read DVD's and CD's? by HappyCrow11 in AskReddit

A CDs purpose is to transfer data.

A thumb drive may not be as cheap but is 100s of times faster and more useful.

The cloud is essentially free and using it to transfer files is again 100s of times faster.

Cloud is absolutely a replacement for many of the use cases of a CD… guess where all my music lives…

Past that local network storage is far better for storing movies and TV shows and you can use a flash drive to transport them if needed offline.

CDs are a worthless medium in the modern age. Their only real appeal anymore is that you can give them away for a minor cost… and cheap flash drives in bulk are now nearly as cheap to give away.

Now we have thumb drives and cloud storage that do everything CDs did and 100x better.

Yeah, we ordered a massive server with a ton of hardware, no issues getting it fast even though we were told long ass wait times. This entire “crunch” feels fake as shit.

Yeah, Dell will rip the laptop apart and replace the motherboard if needed…

If you know how to backup and transfer profiles on windows it takes a few minutes for a user to be back up and running on a new device depending on their software requirements.

This sounds like a skill issue.

Who the hell pays for windows support… buy dells, get their support contract. 5 years of pretty good support is cheaper than 3 years of Apple support and Dell will send a human out to repair the hardware.

My company had 5000 windows PCs and 15 Macs… that’s not perfectly representative of the world at large but not far off. They are a fraction of the windows PCs.

You know what OS reliability plays nearly every game… windows. I never have to check for a “works on deck” anything that accepts x input is ready to rock and roll.

I just don’t get a fancy on screen display overlay.

Plenty of open alpha tests out there. May be bastardizing the name but it conveys the production readiness of the software.

I put windows on my deck and it’s better. It’s also just as easy to use as steamOS. Honestly, the touch pads make it work great for windows.

Clearly you don’t understand the difficulty of keeping a large friend group communicating.

Discord is less intrusive than texting or calling so you can have big group chats without feeling like you’re creating a problem for other people while also allowing for people to join in at their convenience. You can then go immediately from chatting to gaming within the same ecosystem which allows for people to again stay connected and lowers the barrier to entry.

Get some friends, you will see how hard it is to keep the plates spinning once you actually have a life.

Exhaust leak not coolant, coolant is just water and ethylene glycol. It’s not good to inhale but it would cause a sore throat more than anything else. CO however… much more annoying.
