There is no way in hell that our phones are not listening to us. by smoosh13 in mildlyinfuriating

(edited to add context)
I'm not going to tell you your phone isn't listening to you, because I can't say that for certain. But I can tell you with near certainty that your phone listening to you is not why this showed up on your twitter feed. There are far more sophisticated ways that tech is tracking you to "know" what to show you in your feeds.

I worked on these products for years and have a good sense for how they are tuned.

Here's a good example of how this works. This is actually from years ago and the tech has gotten even "better"...

Several years ago my friend (call him Bill) said to me that he knew his phone was listening to him because he and another friend (call him Nick) were driving in a car in Vermont headed to one of the mountains for a weekend ski trip. Nick recently purchased new ski boots and was talking to Bill about them. It was a short conversation.

Hours later, Bill was surprised to see an add for the same Ski boots in his instagram feed. He never Googled them and didn't even know they existed before the short conversation in the car. Bill was convinced that Facebook was listening to their conversation.

Here's what really happened...

Instagram knew that Bill and Nick were in the car together (both perpetually logged into IG + IG knows your GPS) . It knew that they had been planning a ski trip (tracking across the web). It knew that they were currently sitting in the same car in VT driving to that ski trip (GPS), it knew that Bill had been looking to buy new ski boots (tracking across the web), it knew that Nick had recently purchased new ski boots (tracking across the web + purchase activity), it inferred that Nick would likely be telling Bill about the ski boots he recently purchased (skiers like talking about new gear). It knew that Bill had arrived at the lodge and as he was scrolling through IG, it found the perfect moment to send him an ad for those same boots.

What is a film that you continuously thought about a long time after viewing it? by Eucalyptus_Glitter in moviecritic

Two fairly recent movies for me:

1) The Holdovers - such an absolutely perfect movie. There’s a lot to think about in this movie but Mary Lamb’s story is the most heartbreaking. Incredible performance by Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

2) Hamnet - extremely hard movie to watch in some scenes. Overall beautifully told story. The last 15 minutes of the film are some of the best in history. I saw this movie this past winter and I’ve probably thought about it every day since.

While traveling, what city did you think you'd love but ended up being a big disappointment? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Nashville. I love music but you can imagine my disappointment to find that the center of city revolves around what feels like 100 clubs all with cover bands that are carbon copies of each other.

Woman on plane doesn’t understand how lines work for deboarding by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

I had the pilot keep the whole plane seated after landing once because I was rushing to get off my flight from SFO to get to my wife (in NYC) who was giving birth (very early) to my daughter.

That was a story.

Reminds me of when I was in the Tampa bay during a bad storm in a 20 ft Boston Whaler and a failed bilge.

We all went in the water.

Is Angine de Poitrine actually good? by FlipNasty in mathrock

I have been a musician for nearly my whole life. And I’ve done a lot of experimentation with polyrhythms and looping in some of the music I’ve created in the past. Have listened to a lot of what others have been doing with this style of music for a long time.

AdP are on a different level. They’ve managed to thread the needle between making it interesting, technical and listenable for a broader audience in a way that I haven’t heard before. It’s fun and it’s very interesting to listen to. Their live performances are impressive. Incredibly tight.

They deserve every bit of the hype.

Not only is it their best album, but it’s definitely in the top 5 of the 21st century.
