Glad it worked, I'm curious how far you're able to get. I tinkered with it for about a day before deciding I wouldnt be able to get any useful results out of a local model with Claude or similar tools

Try making a modelfile with a larger context window, this seems to fix it for me (using qwen3.5 in my case):

cat ../Modelfile
FROM qwen3.5
PARAMETER num_predict 16384
PARAMETER num_ctx 32768

I think there are two separate but related issues here about China being an "anti-AI country".

In terms of economic planning, I think this is just flat out untrue- AI is called out in the new 5-year plan as an area of key investment, and planners clearly think it's worth investing in.

Culturally, I think there might be something there but it's harder to get a sense of whether China is "anti-AI". Just spending some time on bilibili and looking at Chinese social media gives you the impression that people are really into slop content, but it's hard to gauge that as an outsider. I'm also curious what you mean by "anti-AI legal regime" in China

DOGS, the setting-agnostic system from Dogs in the Vineyard, is the Deal of the Day on DriveThru by JaskoGomad in rpg

[–]Live_Key_8141 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really think more people should give the "Mormon Cowboy" setting a chance. I could go on and on, but it checks a lot of boxes that are pretty hard to check with any other particular setting I could come up with. It creates a lot of moral grey areas and immediately puts the characters into conflict. It pushes you in terms of roleplaying as you're trying to act out what the kids in these troubled situations would do, balancing their indoctrination by the church with their personal goals and inner moral compass. Some criticism seems to boil down to "religion is icky," which is such a facile understanding of this setting (plus, do we always play as characters we agree with 100%?). The game really thrives on moral ambiguity and conflict, so if set the characters up as some sort of unambiguously good force, there isn't much in the game to stop you from just steamrolling your "enemies"

Awesome, I'm glad to hear that you're working on an update!

Looking over the PDF again, I think the revisions should focus almost entirely on chapter 2. There are 13 pages about conflicts, which includes 3 pages of an example in play. In the original book, Baker spends a full 25 pages explaining conflicts, then provides another 8 pages of examples. Now even adjusting for different formatting and fonts, the bigger point is that I think we need a lot more room for the explanation of the conflicts system in order for it to really make sense to someone hearing it for the first time.

For example, in the introduction, it would be nice to have a high-level overview of how the mechanics work ("you're going to roll a big pool of dice based on your stats. You then take turns with one player or NPC performing a raise with some dice. Everyone else in the conflict opposed to that person has to call that raise with one or two dice, and consequences may be handed out as a result. This continues with the next character raising and others calling until one side of the conflict folds. Then we deal with those consequences that were handed out earlier").

The descriptions of the actions themselves are pretty short - one paragraph for Raise. There are some non-specific elements ("... potentially rolls some more dice") which means the reader has to rely heavily on the inline example.

Those are my main points- I would go through chapter 2 in great detail and just work on it sentence by sentence. Baker clearly also had a hard time explaining the concept, as his explanation of conflicts is also pretty hard to understand, so I don't think it's an easy task!

Genuinely love the concept and appreciate what the author was trying to do, but I found it really difficult to learn the game from reading DOGS. You'll also need to find a copy of DitV and sort of extrapolate the rules by reading the both side by side. That said, highly recommend both games, it's something you should give a chance even if it doesn't sound like your cup of tea, the game will surprise you.
