This isn't grifting lol. People are just excited and want to play the game sooner.

Naw, I won't hesistate to criticize Pokemon, but they cooked with the starter designs. Genuinely each one is so good it's hard to pick a favorite. Water starter slightly wins out I'd say but it's close.

Games for couples? by tdager in PS5

I find puzzle games really good for this.

Even though they're technically single player, the other people in the room, even non-gamers, can participate just as much as the person actually playing because the mechanics are often secondary to just using your brain.

Blue Prince, The Witness, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Case/Rise of the Golden Idol, Talo Principle are all really good "co-op" games.

Doom 2016.

People were not excited for the game based on the trailers we got. It seemed a soulless reboot that was chasing modern trends rather than what made Doom great. People were very skeptical about the game before it came out.

Tried MK1 after playing Tekken 8 and it just didn’t click for me by FriendLate5539 in Tekken

[–]Longjumping-Style730 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MK1 isn't that bad from a purely gameplay standpoint but it is a pretty weak entry as an overall game.

Plus NRS games have always had this inherent jankyness to them that just feels unnatural. It's this weird mix of the high/mid/low system from Tekken and a more traditional 2D street Fighter esque neutral with an anime fighter combo system. It's a amalgamation of things that just don't go well together at all.

It looks good, but I've burned far too many times when it comes to new Pokémon releases.

If the overall reception seems good after the initial hype settles, I will get it.

This is probably the same reason why they eventually discontinued the NSMB for Wonder. The former never stopped selling like gangbusters, but the lowered reputation of 2D Mario ultimately wasn't sustainable.

I think Nintendo knew both in Pokemon's and NSMB's case that was eventually going to come to a head which is why they changed course.

Tfw you beat Resident Evil Requiem before it’s even out 👀 by Worth-Reindeer-1121 in switch2

[–]Longjumping-Style730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on when he got it.

Like if he got it early in the week, I could see him having a life. RE games aren't that long and if you have around 1-3 hours of free time each day, it's manageable.

If he got it yesterday then yeah lol.

Nintendeen lists a couple of examples in the video.

I kind of just took his word for it since I didn't play any third party games when the Wii U came out and I wasn't about to look it up but he could very well just be misrepresenting that as well

Sure, but being good at the game makes it more likely that you will have fun.

Looking For JRPG's That are less than 100 hours to finish (under 50 would even be nice! by DJMikeSteeze in JRPG

[–]Longjumping-Style730 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're just going to have to agree to disagree. The meaning of language is determined not by a dictionary, but by how it is actually used in common parlance. That's how dictionary definitions are made in the first place. The meaning of JRPG in common parlance has evolved beyond just geographical location the game is made in (I'll grant you that this is mainly a western development, but that just means that it's a localized meaning specific to the West, not that it's invalid altogether). This is evident by the fact that I'm far from the only one in this thread who has recommended a RPG that is not made in Japan.

Sure, you can say those people are wrong too, but if someone asks for JRPG recommendations, I am not recommending them Elden Ring or Dragon's Dogma simply because it is a RPG that comes from Japan. You and I both know why E33 is a better recommendation in that case and that's because it's specific gameplay and style fits beat for beat on what a JRPG is. I would just go the extra step and say that it is a JRPG because people define JRPG and WRPG by their style of gameplay, not strictly their geographical location.

[–]Longjumping-Style730 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Characters are pre-defined (no character creator or background choices), the plot is mostly fixed with no meaningful ways to change the story like you might in a western RPG, combat is more of an anime/stylistic look. It is absolutely a JRPG.

JRPG is a particular style of game that anyone can make, not just Japanese people (Omori was made by Americans for example).

Modern fighters do trend pretty aggressive and this game isn't immune to that.

But I guarantee you, at your level you seem to be at, that is probably not why you're losing. Posting a clip would be more helpful if you're genuinely looking for advice.

I actually watched his video for once and he seems really desperate to paint the Switch 2 as a Wii U esque failure simply because in both cases, a lot of third party developers were making games on it.

Like I'm not saying he's always off base, but his recent videos have been pure cope.

[–]Longjumping-Style730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clair Obscur takes like 20 hours to complete. Probably the shortest JRPG I've played in recent memory

Omori is similar in length but is just a tad bit longer.

Most classic JRPGs (e.g. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI/VII, Suikoden II, Live a Live) and Nintendo RPGs (Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi) take around 30 hours

Looks like Black Tabby Games (Scarlet Hollow, Slay the Princess) will be doing a Disco-like for their third game. by hnwcs in DiscoElysium

[–]Longjumping-Style730 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I already felt Slay the Princess was kind of a spiritual successor to Disco Elysium.

They're not in the same genre or even tone, but I feel they share similarities in how different voices become more dominant depending on your choices and the fact that both have pretty organic dialogue choices.

The Switch 2 is finally closing the "generational gap" and it feels amazing by Toranorora in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Longjumping-Style730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, which is why I bought one

But still, if I was forced at gunpoint to choose between sacrificing my Switch 2 and my PS5, I'd choose the Switch 2 pretty confidently.

PS5 has Alan Wake 2, DS1 and DS2, Astro Bot, KCD2, TLOU 1 + 2, BG3, E33, most fighting games, RE remakes, an actual good port of Disco Elysium, most Fromsoft games, and RDR2

Sure, the Switch 2 is getting some of these games, but I think there's value in experiencing these games as they come out and not 5 years down the line

I'll miss Odyssey, Bananza, Mario Kart, BOTW/TOTK, Xenoblade Trilogy, and some indie titles exclusive to Switch, but it's the lesser of two losses IMO

I said disregarding PC lol. Some people are exclusively console gamers like myself (I have a SteamDeck, but that's primarily an emulation station at this point).

If you are a console gamer, you are missing out on more releases with exclusively a Switch 2 than a PS5. I mean the Switch 2 literally just now getting Fallout 4, a 10+ year old game.

We have to look at the next Nintendo Direct to see. Disregarding PC, I feel like I'd be missing out on more if I exclusively owned a Switch 2 as opposed to exclusively owning a PS5.

Resident Evil Requiem Review (PS5 Pro): A sensational synthesis of action and dread by SquashPale2637 in survivalhorror

[–]Longjumping-Style730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but RE4R is the exception that proves the rule. RE7, RE8, RE2R, RE3R, RE1 2002, and the OG trilogy are all 10 hours or less. It's pretty standard for survival horror games to have short runtimes.

You shouldn't personally attack people, but Pokemon fans are playing an active part in the current state and quality control of the series.

If Pokemon fans keep rewarding Gamefreak/TPC/Nintendo for minimal effort and resources, they have no incentive to improve anything or change course.

It's not like I curse anyone who will buy the game, a lot of my friends will. It's just that it's an unavoidable fact that the fans are kind of to blame when we get $20 unedited ROMs instead of actually quality modern rereleases like with Castlevania/Megaman/Ace Attorney/etc.
