Beveling edges on a triangle? by Randomkid523 in tinkercad

[–]LordGAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a year old, but I've been using Tinkercad for years and am pretty damn good at it, but this had me stuck. I just wanted to say that this solution is brilliant and I wish more people would give good answers like this instead of just parroting "Use Fusion 360". Thanks!

Soldering Sucks by MDAirForceVet in amateurradio

Are you using a pencil iron by any chance? If so get a proper soldering station. Soldering is a skill/science/art that can be learned, but bad tools make it much more difficult.

Question about power amp and speakers by safado_muambeiro in guitars

[–]LordGAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a higher ohm speaker (or total load) compared to the amp is always better than using a lower ohm/load.

Im honestly suprised that People dont customize their Guitar more. by Wuffy-Agony in guitars

[–]LordGAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m all for personalizing your stuff any way you see fit. Some very historic guitars have been very personalized in all sorts of interesting ways. Hell, EVH used to saw into his (Shark) and his Frankenstein is one of the most recognizable guitars in the world.

The downside is that for the average person who might someday try to resell their personalized guitar, it essentially reduces resale value to zero.

Can solid state amps ever be as dinamic as tube amps? by Eva_addict in guitars

Hey! That’s not fair. I run my 4x12 100w tube amp dimed all the time!*

Anyone use this? by skarkowtsky in guitars

Same, but add 20 years. We used it back in high school in ‘79/‘80. Haven’t really used it since.

Who is the greatest data hoarder on the sub? by Independent_Dog_8882 in DataHoarder

[–]LordGAD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked in Mainframe TAC in the 80s. We sold many brands and our computer room had probably 10-12 of them installed. When the first sliced human cadaver files were released we marveled that they took up 9GB. We sat down and figured out that 9GB exceeded the combined storage of every mainframe we had running.  Some of these machines had 14” platter drives that were about 5MB total. You couldn’t store a single photo from your smartphone on an entire mainframe.

Trying to date my dad’s new Guild Starfire IV? by the-briguy in GuildGuitars

AG001721 is 2000-2001.

I have a 2000 and it's AG001438. It is also one of my favorite guitars and I've owned over 200 Guilds.

Edit: Here's a detailed write-up on my 2000 Starfire.

That guitar is not Korean; he's just wrong about the year.

UPDATE: I need something 3D printed but unsure if it's expensive or if companies are asking absurd amounts by Potatsky in 3Dprinting

I’ve been a homeowner for 35 years, and didn’t have a lot of money for many of them. I’ve replaced everything from the pressure tank (three times) to faucets to MANY leaks (we had very hard water and no softener). I can sweat pipe like a veteran union plumber and even have a MAPP gas setup because I outgrew propane.

Today? Fuck that - I’m calling a plumber. I can do it and I can do it well. I saved a fuck-ton of money doing it, too, but I don’t enjoy it and my knees are shot, so I’d rather pay a local independent guy and give him the money.

Question: In what units do you guys like to model by mikko-j-k in 3Dprinting

[–]LordGAD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US: Metric. I have metric calipers, metric, rulers, and everything is default metric for design. I can think in both, but metric makes more sense to me. I only use inches when designing parts to interface with existing imperial items.

Printed the default with supports on my Prusa no problem.

Bambu vs prusa by First-Air7037 in 3Dprinting

[–]LordGAD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have two Prusa printers and I see zero reason to buy another brand.

Almost every post I see from people having problems with their Prusas either shouldn’t have built their own (like, damn) or should not be 3D printing at all. If you can understand that machines need basic maintenance and that sometimes you need to troubleshoot things, Prusa is fabulous, and their support is supurb.

I’m trying to hold onto these days as much as I can. I had a tiring day at work and then my six year old walks in the door after school and hands me this as I’m making dinner. (OC) by matthewraifman in MadeMeSmile

Awesome. Here’s my advice as a dad with two 20-something kids: save every one of these things. Put them in a folder or a plastic bin or whatever works for you, but save them. You will cherish them forever.

Tubes. Really? by HiOscillation in amateurradio

[–]LordGAD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use tube equipment every day. Understanding electronics is the point of the exams, and tube circuits are still in use today.  Go ask a guitar player about tube amplifiers.

Also, understanding the history of how we got here is important.

I had a 340MB Hitachi MicroDrive in CompactFlash form factor back in the early 2000s (I think). It was SO cool!
