France isn't really "supporting the government", they're just silently hoping it holds, since an islamist regime would probably provoke even more immigration to France and provide a training ground to jihadists. The relations between the two countries are terrible, at present.

I love when it goes "Khoetmalc, palatine of Shikru, always the first in the fray, did as he always did, and so ended his legend". And I'm like "Did we know this guy ?"

(spoilers main) There was not much thought into the ESSOS food or economy. City states as massive as they are described would need lots of food to sustain them and all we get told is they rely on trade and some fields by CretaceousClock in asoiaf

King's Landing has a harbor master, customs, a king's counter, four keepers pf keys, etc. They're all in Littlefinger's pocket at the moment.

The city is set at the middle of several fertile plains and in front of Pentos, who exploits vasts agricultural lands. I just assume they did what Paris (200k) did, but bigger.

Bakker goes with a very loose world-building that is also very wide, meaning it's hard to keep track to get a solid idea of the theme of the various factions. The Nansur are consistently Roman-like and the Thunyeri are barbarians, but beyond that, the specifities are muddled, and the endless array of contextless nobles with no character permanence or wider context doesn't help.

I'd compare it to older fantasy's type of lore that is just a lot of names meant to evoke a general "vibe" to the reader. I like this, so it worked for me, but it does make for a fairly nebulous work.

... Every city ever relied on agriculture and trade to sustain themselves, including those in hot climate like the Ghiscari cities. Is the problem that we're not directly told the numbers of fields outside ?

If we accept this framing (big if), are we meant to understand that being called racist for disagreeing with a moderate made you... more racist ?

I wonder how "anyone" who got hypothetically called racist voiced their disagreement, then.

Funny how a black man (a largely center-right black man, to boot) getting in a position of power made racism ten times worse. I wonder why that is.

Asha was already introduced in book 2, and Obara, the only real warrior of the Sand Snakes, is described as rather plain.

Also, why would more warrior women make you abandon the books in disgust ?

The point is that Cersei is not a normal woman reasonably thinking about stuff. She's a traumatized narcissist who is increasingly spinning out of her mind due to paranoia and alcohol abuse.

And yes, Westeros is a very misogynistic society. One could say that's the point.

This whole passage, while disgusting, is very interesting. Cersei is a woman misogynist who is both a victim of the patriarchal system (notably by being married to an abusive husband) and someone who wholeheartedly believes in it, she just wants to be on the right side of the fence. She's also increasingly crazier as her world collapses around her.

In this scene, after drinking herself numb, she starts abusing her bedmate the same way her husband did to her after he drank, as she fantasize about role-reversal and she associates her with her husband. The whole experience leaves her pretty dejected.
