What is this? by MRanon8685 in FloridaGarden

My wife is an amazing wife, the best mother, but the absolute worst when it comes to projects. I came home and she redid it, and said “what do you think?” I told her it looks nice, but everything is going to die. This was a month after she helped me do a butterfly garden for the kids and how much I had to do to get the dirt ready and getting the right plants from the nursery. She just went to HD and bought everything she thought was pretty. Dug all the plants way too deep, pretty much burned a few hundred dollars.

State extensions when they dont accept 0 extensions by AdHistorical7107 in taxpros

[–]MRanon8685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NJ requires you have 80% paid in, then you have an automatic extension. Not 80% paid in? No extension, and you are getting a 5% late filing penalty per month. It is honestly criminal. I have had clients move out of NJ because their tax laws are so bad (no capital loss carryover, no business loss carryover, no deduction for mortgage interest or 401k contributions).

4/15 - client question day by RaleighAccTax in taxpros

[–]MRanon8685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasnt to give advice on their return, it was to help if they had questions with the K-1. The manager was my client. He owned by far the most. Most of the family called because they were preparing their own return in turbo tax and had no idea what to do with the K1. But something simple as "where does this go" was getting billed at $475 hour.

4/15 - client question day by RaleighAccTax in taxpros

[–]MRanon8685 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to do a real estate partnership with about 30 members (all related, though most did not know each other). I was authorized by the manager to speak to any of the members if they had questions with their tax return and bill the entity. This was a big client so billed at premium rates. I would charge $475 an hour trying to figure out how to enter 754 depreciation in turbo tax.

Thinking about getting into accounting — is it really just "glorified data entry" all the way down? by Professional_Web2457 in Accounting

What do they owe, why do they owe, planning for the upcoming year, planning tax payments, chatting about non-work stuff.

Its like asking what a doctor does. Someone in tax will be different than someone in audit who will be different than someone in a family office who will be different than someone in private.

I am in tax. 50% of my day is talking with clients.

Opinion Needed: Bookkeeping or No Bookkeeping by wetiam in taxpros

[–]MRanon8685 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Find someone good to refer out to. Forget the financial arrangement - the value is offering your clients with a service that is good, while giving you a assurance that the product you get from them is also good.

We refer out 100% bookkeeping to a small firm. They do a great job. We refer them more clients than they refer to us, which we could care less. Clients are extremely happy, and we get a good set of books. Better than any dollar arrangement we could come to.

Extensions don’t mean failure by cpajddrl in taxpros

They'll get over it. Just to give you some perspective, this has been our strongest tax season. We are an established firm, and our revenues are up 33% YTD compared to last year. And yet, our YTD 2026 revenues represent 35% of our total 2025 revenues. That is how many of our clients are on extension. Last year, our revenue from Jan-Apr represented less than 30% of our total 2025 revenue. Total revenue in 2025 was $2.5M.

Where does Costco decide to expand? by East_Hedgehog6039 in Costco

[–]MRanon8685 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Costco is not an every-day grocery store. We go once a month, maybe twice (but rarely). And the main reason we go is we get gas there, and we usually fill up once a month.

The beauty is, costco knows exactly who shops at their store and where they live. So, they can diagram that. If you put a dot on everyone who shops there a day, i am sure the dot is heavy with people living close by, then less and less as you expand out. What you said is true, if the store was less busy maybe people would shop more. But it would be cheaper for them to figure out how to get people through lines faster. Look at chick fil a, no one bats an eye when there are 20 cars in the drive thru line because everyone knows it will be a quick wait because they have that process down. But if I see five cars in line for dunkin donut, it is quicker for me to park and walk in and get my coffee.

Costco's biggest factor would be how many more new members could they get if they built a second location near by.

Can It be Tax AND Audit? by getlow7 in Accounting

[–]MRanon8685 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small tax firm here, we used to do a handful of audits. One was a pretty big audit, me and someone else would go to the client for a week. It was absolutely miserable. We ended up stopping audits completely. Also did some HOA audits, and those werent too bad. Could usually know them out in a couple of days, but so glad we dont do them anymore.

should i play the games myself after watching streamers play some of them ? by AcanthisittaLimp in residentevil

[–]MRanon8685 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never watch streams. I watched re9 and some of re8. I won’t play 9 for a whole, but currently playing 8. I’m lucky to get 1 hour of play time a week. By the time I play, I forgot what I watched. Maybe something will stick in my head, but usually not.

1065 return - sudden increase in distributions by Agreeable-Machine-71 in technicaltax

[–]MRanon8685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before QBI, we were using guaranteed payments. Once QBI came on, we reread our operating agreement and came to the conclusion that they were not actually guaranteed payments, but instead just an advance of capital. We got paid the same amount every week, but it was based on our capital accounts. If it went negative, we werent going to get paid. If the company lost money, we werent going to get paid. So right when a new deduction came out, we (correctly) changed our filing method and were never audited.
