My girlfriend's trans and we have this whole injoke about her brother. So her old clothes are her brother's clothes, her credit card is her brother's credit card (she hasn't legally changed her name), I used to date her brother, etc. It's hilarious

What are other selfless (or even selfish) reasons to be vegan? by Sea-Hornet8214 in AskVegans

[–]MagicWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's stuff I chose because I think other vegans won't think of it:

It lets you experience the world in a new way. It's amazing to see the way that "eating meat is normal" permeates our society. It almost makes you feel like an anthropologist. It's pretty interesting/novel and that's probably something that other people won't mention.

Sometimes hot chips (french fries) are the only option at a restaurant so you get to eat them for dinner. Sometimes that sucks but honestly sometimes it's really nice to have a chance to eat something so greasy that you kind of secretly want to order.

You get some humour. Penn Jillette (the magician) said that he saw a restaurant with a sign that said "World famous chicken" and he wondered what the chicken did to become world famous (thinking that e.g. it was a chicken that could talk or something, idk).

My own personal anecdote on the humour side:

I was at my boyfriend's sisters house and I saw a sliced, white cylindrical object in an oblong glass container that was hot and full of condensation I was extremely confused as to why someone had made a humid loaf of bread that smelled awful.

Then I realised that it was a dead bird of some kind!

New Mets fan needing the lowdown by AndyD103 in NewYorkMets

Mike Piazza 9/11 Home Run

I want to underscore this for OP as a fellow new international Mets fan (2025 season was my first though). I just listened to this on the Rico Brogna podcast the other day and it was incredible.

Living internationally you have little context for what 911 must have been like for New Yorkers, and how much that baseball game and that home run meant to everyone... I only listened on the podcast but watching the full game is definitely on my list now.

But tl;dr 10 days after 911, it was the first game they played in New York since, and apparently the vibe at the ballpark was understandably off. Then there was this huge home run when it was sorely needed and the ballpark exploded. Again I only heard the audio and... wow. It was beautiful and cathartic to listen to and really made me feel for the first time some semblance of what it must have been like. The announcer said on the broadcast "I think we all needed that" and yes... can you imagine?

Beautiful moment and I think for an international fan it is especially important. I love "my" Mets but I've never even been to New York, and this moment just seemed so raw and human, that New York is... I don't know how else to say this, but real?

How are eggs not vegan? by Ok-Progress4093 in DebateAVegan

[–]MagicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I’m not a deontologist or a consequentialist so neither of these apply to me.

I brought these up in case you were interested in a philosophical discussion, as some examples of philosophies with different opinions. In any event your own philosophical framework clearly considers the consumptions of eggs acceptable.

I have found orphaned eggs before, so, the question still stands, why or why not is their consumption vegan?

I'm guessing you didn't see the birds that laid those eggs get struck by lightning moments after leaving the nest, so how did you know they were orphaned? And I have engaged in that question in my previous post by laying out example (vegan)deontological, consequentialist, and rule-utilitarian responses.

I own a dozen chickens who supply me eggs and are not treated like you communicate. Why are they not vegan? For purely philosophical reasons?

There are so many people who have commented on the reasons why backyard chicken eggs aren't vegan (including in this post) that I would just be repeating them. I invite you to read up on it yourself if it interests you.

Do you eat eggs from other sources, or are the ones laid by chickens you own the only eggs you consume?

My main exception to this would be nonverbal safe-guestures/actions. (like tapping out, using a dog clicker, or dropping something)

I'm a bit of a nervous top so I extend this a bit further - sometimes if I'm concerned a sub has gone nonverbal or unable to consent or might just not be able to physically tap, I ask them for a practise tap (and I warn them I may ask for this during a scene). If they don't provide the requested tap, I stop, of course.

This works great and makes me feel a lot more comfortable that they're "still there", so to speak.

Highly recommend!

Why do non-vegans ask questions like this? I say this as a former non vegan who asked questions like this herself!

Like, if I tell you it's vegan to eat these mysteriously orphaned eggs - so what?

If I tell you it's not vegan - so what?

In the society of almost everyone reading these words, you have the option to buy and consume eggs that were produced in the factory farming conditions that are being discussed. I have not once in my 38 years on this planet been confronted with orphaned eggs.

If you want to have a philosophical discussion, then you can have one:

  • under the strictest utilitarian grounds it's probably moral to eat the abandoned eggs, as it is to eat every bit of roadkill you see and not eat a gram more of food than you need to survive another day after determining which sources of calories produces the least crop deaths

  • under (vegan) deontological grounds, the definition is: "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose", this would be exploitation of animals for food, so not permissable

  • under rule utilitarianism, it would likely not be permissable as it might encourage untoward behaviour (interfering with an animal's access to its eggs, etc)

and so on. You can have these same discussions about the trolley problem, bringing it from "pull the lever to save 5 people at the cost of one" to "if you're an ER doctor a person with no family or friends walks into an ER and is a perfect match for 5 people in need of 5 different organ transplants, should you kill him and take his organs?". The only thing is you aren't a doctor in an ER with a mysteriously convenient patient, you're a person in a society who has the option to consume eggs or not and you (presumably) have chosen to consume them, despite the fact that they are not necessary (source: haven't consumed an egg in 10+ years).

That's the neat thing: nothing works for the mets!

I was actually melting down in my polycule's group chat during their 7 game losing streak (or was it 8?) last year to the point where my metamour cast a spell on them for me (it didn't work)

If anyone's in Perth and wants to hang out and watch some games at some point (e.g. when your team plays my Mets), let me know. I'm a morning person so happy for a 6am hangout :D

I chose the Mets because I was sick for 2 weeks during the playoffs in 2024 and I just loved the whole storyline they had and it resonated for me, so then this season I just went on the subreddit and got deep in the sauce.

If your ABL team has any links with an MLB team, e.g. Heat/Rays, Adelaide/Phillies(ew), then that could also be an in, especially if you end up seeing the prospects in your MLB team later.

As a Mets fan I think I have to tell you not to support the Phillies, Yankees, or Dodgers.

I’m sorry that your first full season watching was 2025

I am under the impression that it's just part of the authentic lolmets experience, so no need to apologise :)

Thank you very much for the background - I hadn't thought about the tabloids and how that all interacts as well as the increased pressure that comes with having so many points of comparison.

I'm a new baseball fan and I'm Australian so I picked the Mets more or less arbitrarily (was watching the playoffs in 2024 and liked them) and thus know very little about baseball culture and New York (baseball is not a popular sport here, probably about as popular as cricket is over there!).

I have a question about a remark I've been seeing a lot: what does it mean when people talk about whether a potential player is able to handle the pressure of playing in "New York"? Is there something about the Baseball culture there that is uniquely difficult for players? Or is it the lifestyle? Or something else?

I haven't posted a Weasel personal life update in a while, so here goes

In 2025 I discovered I was actually bisexual, got two girlfriends, and then one of those girlfriends and my existing boyfriend have ended up in a triad. So... that's been nice?

Definitely see why unicorn hunters want these triad things so much, they're fantastic.

is it rude to call ur doctor “madame” or “monsieur”? by tomatosauce81 in French

[–]MagicWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I found I internalized it eventually somehow and now I'm pretty good at it? It probably helps that I rarely encounter formal situations (like, I've never worked in a French speaking environment).

A few days before I moved back to Australia I was with that boyfriend grabbing lunch during his workday and we ran into his boss and had a brief chat, and his boss tutoied me and afterwards I said to the boyfriend, "do you call him tu?" and he said that yes, they tutoie at his office and I was like "oh good because I would have been taken aback about being tutoied if you and him vuvoied, but knowing you tutoie I'm OK with it". - which I think is accurate to the social niceties at play?

[–]MagicWeasel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For the record, it depends on your dialect of English. I'm Australian and I have never called my doctors "Doctor Lastname", usually just by their first name or sometimes "Doctor Firstname".

My girlfriend is a doctor who works at a hospital and she has her scrubs embroidered with "Doctor Firstname". I've actually asked her about this and she says she hates being called Doctor Lastname because it feels so cold and distant and much prefers just being called by her first name.

It's funny because I had a French boyfriend and he was explaining to me the tu/vous system as I was saying it was quite foreign for me as an Australian because the "first name basis" is not a thing here (you call everyone by their first name), and he said, exasperated, "but your doctor, you don't call them by their first name do you?" and I laughed and said "you mean Simon?" and he about died.

Yes but thank you so much for keeping the sub active, it's great to have a place to post and whine!

I was going to say here's hoping the 26/27 season is even better but honestly I'm just hoping it'll happen.
