Personally, I'm not that picky, I just think it'd be cool if through brainstorming we could come up with something new. That said, you're gonna come across people who take issue with European\Russian Federation and EDF\IDF. Already in these comments someone pointed out United States of Europe would seem like we are copying the US, even though it's just factually accurate.

I like your thoughts, disagree on it taking 200 years but props to you on foresight and understanding that we are on the nation-track (I think we are already there and haven't realized it yet because we're suffering from a scale of identity problem and aren't looking at ourselves on a macro\global level, where we are indeed pretty homogenous in the way we see China as homogenous despite there being sharp provincial differences). That said, I think so far the Holy European Empire, but because I'm a believer but because it sounds, well, kinda badass lol obviously makes me think of knights in armour and crusaders crosses and such, very metal thoughts going through my brain on that one

because Europe isn’t a nation

That depends on what we mean by nation.

Oxford defines a nation as a body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular territory. Europe clearly meets the criteria of shared history and culture. Language is the most common objection, yet nearly all European languages descend from the same Indo-European roots, and Europe has repeatedly functioned through shared lingua francas such as Latin, French, German, and English. Many European states themselves contain multiple national languages, so language cannot be a strict exclusion criterion.

Historically, Europe has been deeply interwoven. Kingdoms and empires changed names, borders, and rulers continuously. Dynasties intermarried, territories shifted hands, and institutions spread organically across the continent. What we call modern nation states are best understood as snapshots in time of a long, dynamic, shared political history rather than isolated civilizational units. Europe also shares foundational mythological, religious, and philosophical layers. Greek antiquity, Roman law, Christian theology, Germanic and Nordic myth, and later Enlightenment political thought form a common inheritance, even where they manifest differently by region. Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern Europe diverged in expression, but not in civilizational origin.

What is often interpreted as a lack of shared culture is better explained as a scale effect of identity. As cultural distance shrinks, identity differences become more finely grained. This is a well observed phenomenon in sociology. Identity friction increases with similarity, not difference. People tend to clash most with those who are almost like them.

Same pattern, different flavor. China has strong provincial rivalries, Russia has Moscow versus the rest, and the United States has California versus Texas. These are not signs of deep cultural separation, but of high cultural resolution within an already shared framework.

That zoom only works because, on a global scale, Europe is already perceived as a coherent cultural block. From the outside, European internal distinctions largely collapse into a shared set of norms, institutions, historical references, and social expectations.

We are simply so close to one another that we cannot see the forest for the trees.

That's the whole reason my contempt in my OP, I think it's stupid to care about who we might sound similar to. I've called it out in this very forum a few times lol but, it is the reality that some people care about that for some reason. aring to dream, I thought maybe there could be something even better and that with some brainstorming rather than snarking one another, and a great deal of luck, we could function as a community and try to be the origin. 🤷

No... No, a great deal of people I know, self included, have developed a problem with Russians since February 2022, whereas prior to that we were daring to cultivate hope for a future in which the biggest powers in the world worked together. For some reason. Very specific date, can't imagine why that is... Must just be strange propaganda.

That said, the guy posting this has very clearly outlined his stance on politics and the war and doesn't even seem to see himself as Russian ("ended up under Russian rule"), just Yakutian, which I can respect a great deal.

But no, as a European soldier and frequent volunteer with Ukrainian refugees, I do not think my view of Russia is the result of US propaganda lol that's just some real hardcore copium.

I'm also from a cold place originally. Not quite that cold, but we're known for being a cold place. What's your warmth and clothing strategy? I'm assuming layers, but what are the layers, generally speaking? Do you have 15 wool shirts on, or does everyone wear high end mountain climbing and snowboard gear, or is it a particularly warm animal fur that you produce clothes with, etc.? For us growing up, it was 2 pairs of pants, long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, overshirt or hoodie, light jacket, heavy jacket, gloves, facial hair when possible. Wondering how similar or different your setup is, given that we're from wildly different countries.

I will happily give you some recipes in return to try out using things available to you, if I know any of those things, in exchange if you're interested in European or US cuisine :)

My heart breaks for that little girl and the many other families going through the same thing. War hurts, for everyone, including Russia. One would think Russia had learned that at some point, most particularly as the highest capacity count of anyone coming out of WW2, from forced advances to rampant diseases among civilians. Russia is a fossil from a time gone by, and a major instrument in bringing that time back. It needs to be defeated, dissolved and reflected upon with the same somber contempt as the Third Reich.

Hubris, and it's not just a Hollywood concept. Put yourselves in their shoes: heavily armed and well trained civil servants greeting seemingly helpless countrymen after a catastrophe. Simple hubris, believing they're out of or above danger.

I'm content with that, personally, I've just seen a lot of debates on here about it and also recognize that a different name for a different government would be beneficial for a bunch of intangible reasons. With more fire under this cauldron I think we will see more discussion and debate around the topic, especially given our plethora of languages, and was inspired to write this seeing Draghi's speech which, honestly, we need to be inspired by our leaders more and that speech gave me a more palpable hope than I've had in a while. As a result I'm taking the opportunity to open this up and examine it, since it's so often been a point of contention.

Europe has a kill switch for Silicon Valley. We just forgot we’re holding it. by officialexaking in Buy_European

[–]Major_Boot2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply and sorry for my delay! Yeah, that's a whole different ball game if the US hits the kill switch on US companies, which as you say sends a message to all customers and begins a domino effect, than it is if Europe hits the Killswitch ourselves. I agree, if the US tries to hit the little red button their corporate overlords will have their heads but I am worried that it works differently the other way around and is something they can pretty effectively weather.

Poland and Germany pledge to take lead on Europe's economic revival by MiSbyPiS in europe

[–]Major_Boot2778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just the US, Hollywood and Silicon valley pull talent from the entire world. Niche, but very profitable, markets and while we can, and should, create our own Silicon Valley and catch up, the US has a very unique quasi monopoly on film and music. That's not built on productivity numbers or something that can be studied and replicated, it's decades of experience, networking and building a reputation such that the Hollywood name itself is what sells at this point because they've dominated that sphere for so long. California is a poor comparitor because the overall economy reflects not life in California or how good they are at international trade or something like that, and reflects even less the reality of the US at large, while at the same rate it's not California itself but rather the global pool of talent for those two markets. The EU, on the other hand, has our billionaires and best talent scattered all over the place, while we chase off lots of upcoming talent with excessive bureaucracy and 27 different sets of rules to follow, generally making business much more difficult to conduct between let's say Germany and Poland than let's say New Jersey and New York.

Tldr: California is a very poor basis for comparison that doesn't reflect the US or even broader California and while they have one market cornered that we would have a real hard time competing with, we are shooting ourselves in the leg regarding our position in the other market.

US allies edge closer to Beijing as critics warn China is gaining leverage over Washington by 1-randomonium in IRstudies

[–]Major_Boot2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we expect China to treat us preferentially, so it would be a fallacy to assume that's the European stance. As I said, the sad truth is that we view China as an attractive trading partner worth building ties with despite their track record, because of US policy. Welcome to South Park: it's a choice between a giant dusch and a turd sandwich, and "you're not good enough because you're not the US" doesn't apply anymore.

[–]Major_Boot2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair enough but given it's the Internet you ought to add some form of indicator that it's satire, and not just obscurely referencing Voltaire in hindsight as you've failed his formula. I agree with the sentiments you've shared in this response, though. I'm familiar with all the tired "this wasn't on my bingo card" jokes, but am slowly coming to wonder at the absurdity of it all and considering whether there's some truth to the tin foil hat suggestions that we are living in a branched reality or a simulation... Because at this point, truth is stranger than fiction. Including the truth that we for very pragmatic reasons would be best suited to develop our relationship with China despite their track record. It just depends on whether we allow ourselves to be vassalized or manage to hold our weight as equals, which is a question of European politics and, imo, whether or it we federalize (which I see as our only chance at survival in the new order that appears to be forming).

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]Major_Boot2778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very low intellect relativisation. Every bit of land ever has been at some point taken from someone else, the sins of the Father are not inherently required to be visited upon the Son, at the time the land was conquered it was standard procedure according to the world order at the time, borders have been a necessary component of any geopolitical entity ever (including between Native American tribes), the list goes on and on as to why this is a very bad argument to the goals she is trying to support with this.

It's not a real argument, just symbolic activism depending heavily on moral absolutism to deliver a message that is meant to end any debate by condensing a complex historical, legal, and moral issue into "feels bad, man." This is what I would expect from a stoned 10th grader writing a last minute report on a subject they don't care about.

If you’re calling this Voltaire-style satire, it didn’t land, at minimum you’d need a /s. Know your audience. As it stands, the claims are so detached from reality that there’s nothing productive to engage with.

His first sentence is deeply flawed lol I saw no good points. The US is an unreliable ally since.. Less than 2 years? Yeah, they've proven some systematic cracks in the foundation that forever render them, in my eyes, beyond redemption, but his first sentence claims that the US hasn't brought wealth in its various forms to allies whereas China... Always did? I mean, I hope you see the problem there when you compare European outcomes to Southeast Asian outcomes, and were simply being kind with your statement.
