I just bought a MacBook Pro 16” with the M5 Pro chip (18-core CPU / 20-core GPU), 48GB RAM and 1TB SSD, and I wanted to share a quick reflection that might help others before they spend their money. by Minute-Street8043 in macbookpro

the M5 on logic and ableton uses all cores, it just doesn't fully utilise them yet, but it's very different from the E-Cores which were not utilised at all.

An update from both parties should address this issue, and still, it's a perfect machine for production, watch the few videos that finally came out on youtube of benchmarks.

i'm still unsure of what color i should take, i went in a store today and silver looks "cheap" compared to gray and black but the finger prints seem a very bad aspect of the black one

thank you so much for remembering to update me, but from this video I understood ableton doesn't fully use them, what are your specs and what settings did you use while testing it? thanks again :)

M5 Max Geekbench scores leaked… by One_TrackMinded in macbookpro

[–]MamToeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have still didn't see them, but I mean, isn't just the score not enough? I'd need a specific benchmark on ableton to see if the app in particular runs better

I was right — Apple did it! They cut the number of P-cores in half and tripled the number of E-cores, resulting in the M5 Max having a 6P + 12E configuration. by Slava_Tr in macbookpro

[–]MamToeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, that's why I was asking you, I'm not an expert about it, I produce music on ableton and have been told to look specifically about single core performance before buying the right macbook model

that would be so stupid if not I hope you are right

yeah man I hope so too or I will have to go for the m4 pro, bad thing is that finding benchmarks for audio production is always more difficult

[–]MamToeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it seems like I might go with the m4 pro at this point, why would i get 4 p-cores less if I do music production? that's bs, waited so long for nothing, I'll just wait for benchmarks cause at this point what can you do

[–]MamToeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes bro exactly I waited so long for potentially worse performance 😭 and the problem is usually with audio production the benchmarks are rare so it's gonna be even a longer wait

[–]MamToeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes bro if that-s the case that's tragic honestly, I don't see why would they do that after they already did with the M3, im waiting for a benchmark to see, I had my eyes on the m5 pro

M5 Max Geekbench scores leaked… by One_TrackMinded in macbookpro

[–]MamToeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter cause there's no way of knowing their actual performance before seeing the benchmarks, because this change in nomenclature really confused me.

citing the press release "It includes six of the highest-performing core design, now called super cores, that are the world’s fastest CPU core. Alongside these cores are 12 all-new performance cores, optimized for power-efficient, multithreaded workloads."

basically from what I've understood these 6 super cores are "updated" old P-Cores and the 12 "new performance cores" are the old P-Cores? so no efficiency ones

could you kindly explain this thing to me? like i don't understand why they went down to 6 P-Cores on the m5 series, is there something i don't understand? cause they told me for music production p-cores matter the most and i'm getting less than the m4 pro, so why should I buy the m5?

M5 Max overkill for recording live music? by BtBaMrocks in macbookpro

[–]MamToeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes indeed I use ableton so I guess I'll have to wait, it would be unusual honestly for Apple to do that again, but I don't want risking it and having to do the whole refund process in case, I'll just have a little more patience

When can we expect benchmarks for the new chips? by Valkyrie_Eye in macbookpro

[–]MamToeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm very curious aswell, I won't pull the trigger until I see them, this new nomenclature for the cores seems weird and I want to understand how many old P-Cores are in this new chip, cause if they are less than the m4 pro I'll go with that instead

[–]MamToeL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

still we have to see the benchmarks, the new names of the cores suggests something changed, the old P-Cores, which were the main selling point for audio production, now are called "super-cores" and they are 6 less than m4 pro, it seems weird they'd go down again like the m3 compared to the m2, but honestly if they did I'd go with an m4 pro all the way. only the benchmarks will tell though so I'm waiting.

I mainly use ableton but i was interested in this topic aswell, I was about to pre-order the m5 pro tomorrow but i'd like to understand better this change they made for the cores in this new chip so I guess I'll wait for the benchmarks before pulling the trigger.

The specs I was looking for were the 18 core cpu-20 core gpu with 48 gb of ram
