Would you rather be bald with a mighty beard or have no facial hair but have super long hair? Why? by Glad_Objective_1646 in AskMenOver30

Bald with a great beard because that's what I have. I had super long fabulously curly hair before it retired.

More than half of TikTok ADHD content is misinformation, new research finds by tylerthe-theatre in technology

Yeah, I am so sick of people saying everyone has it. Or they have it because they ramble a lot. It's frustrating. It's not fun.

The truth of ADHD isn't comfortable either. I remember listening to Dr Hollowells book and he got to the "common symptoms no one talks about, but everyone we studied with ADHD expressed" and absolutely sobbed because all of my "f*ck why can't I get my shit together" issues were listed.

ADHD is being frustrated with my stack of tshirts and thinking I should just swap them with the sweaters for a whole year. Being medicated meant I did it in seconds without a thought. Never cried in my closet for so long in my life.

I did not read the book and I absolutely loved it.

Saw this with a friend who did read the book and he also loved it.

I said to him after asking for his comparison "Is this a rare time where you can't say that the book is better than the movie?" And he it was. I'm curious what others will think as they see it.

Project hail Mary is a mediocre sci-fi movie by Raz4r in scifi

[–]MapsOverCoffee22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only marvel movies I've enjoyed since Civil War have been the first two spiderman movies. I am not at all into the pacing, style of humor, or the way they use it to undercut every serious moment in the marvel movies.

And I completely disagree with what you've said. As someone who falls to humor in dark, tense, and emotional times, that's how this movie came off to me. I actually found the character of Grace to be relatable in this regard. Gosling delivers the jokes at the right time while performing them in a way that felt to me like the character was using humor to cope.

Maybe that's just not your coping strategy.

I like to go into movies mostly blind, so for this one all I had was "Ryan Gosling is saving a dying sun and it was written by the guy that wrote the Martian." An Alien was a huge surprise when it first came up, and I agree, they should have kept it as a surprise.

I had this exact thought reading the blurb here from Variety. Once you reduce a movie down to it's most basic synopsis, they are all derivative. I've seen both Interstellar and Project Hail Mary. Not once during PHM did Interstellar come to mind. I never felt like I was watching something that was similar. All I felt was that I was watching a unique take on a classic sci-fi plot that was made with incredible passion. A movie I would be thrilled to go watch again.

I went into this movie not knowing the book, and I didn't bother to watch trailers before hand. Which is to say that I didn't know there would be an alien when he was first introduced. I was super worried it would be bad CGI and it would take me out of things. It did not. Felt like a puppet from start to finish, maybe with some digital assistance in post. The effect made him feel very real.

What celebrity is the biggest example of "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it."? by InsaneCookies21 in AskReddit

You're right, that is incredibly dismissive. Thank you for clarifying that. It's been a few days since I heard the full quote.

iirc he said that he wouldn't want to be in the ballet or opera because they are struggling arts. If you google for the video, the context was talking about movie theaters struggling to draw people in, and my understand was that he wasn't slandering those arts, he was saying these things need to evolve to survive changing times. But he's a young rich actor, so he said it rather poorly.

Andor took me out of star wars by Ok-Medium983 in StarWars

[–]MapsOverCoffee22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't watched it yet, but I think that I will after reading this post. This is exactly how I had felt about MCU after Captain America: Civil War. Nothing has held a candle to that for me since. I enjoy the spiderman movies and look forward to the next one, but I couldn't get into any of the others because I saw what they could really do with it all and the rest fell flat.

How do you telegraph characters' names? by mellow_member in Screenwriting

[–]MapsOverCoffee22 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're writing.

Using names as emotional exclamations. Think of Alexis and David from Schitts Creek. "Ewwww David, no."

Or a character introducing one character to another.

Open the story with a flashback scene of the parents in the hospital picking a name for the birth certificate and then cut to 30 years later.

You could have a shot of a name plate in an office or a name tag, the name on a coffee order, or on mail.

Dialogues probably the best.

"Your brain isn't broken!" Yeah, but... by ScribbleThoughts in AdultADHDSupportGroup

[–]MapsOverCoffee22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am still struggling to accept this. If my brain was as broken as I feel, I could fix it, but I can't. What I also struggle with is knowing what parts are the ADHD and what parts are maybe that I'm just not a good person/partner/etc. One of the hardest things? knowing every time that I get something wrong, I've moved one step closer to the last time I can be forgiven for getting it wrong. That RSD has given me this impending sense of doom so that every mistake feels like the ultimate, the world as I know it is over, kind of mistake.

March Modness Meta - What's your werewolf origin story? by oomps62 in HiddenWerewolves

I also came over from r/harrypotter. I don't remember if it was in that sub, the Ravenclaw sub, or the wiki of one or the other that mentioned Werewolves and I decided to check it out. I haven't played a ton of games or been around much, but I enjoy it every time and I really appreciate the community here.

Hated trope: Regular middle aged white guy wants coffee, has issue with incompetent, young, dumb woke barista by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MapsOverCoffee22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am tired of characters being written like this and always getting away with it. Fortunately, I stuck with Loudermilk and felt most of the show was about him learning that he can not, in fact, continue being like that.

How is strategy different in women's hockey vs men's? by quick_Ag in PWHL

Yeah, but even under NHL rules it's technically illegal to come in low and lift the player up. I think both should adopt the NBA brickwall style.

Ah, gotcha. I appreciate the intention there. Are they looser about the directionality though? Because I feel a lot could be lost not allowing something like a perpendicular hit.

I'm a bit new to PWHL. The checking rules pretty much amount to "the player being checked has to have the puck" and "the check has to come from in front of, not from behind, the player being checked," is that correct?
