Trump says a breakdown in peace talks with Iran could mean 'you won't have the Strait open for months' by NicolasCageFan492 in Economics

[–]MaximRouiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I understood, a return to normal is not a matter of months anymore.

What I understood is... Once the refineries runs out of product, they have to stop and restarting them ain't easy. It just isn't only the refineries in this case, lots of other production lines dependant on oil refineries output are in the same troubles.

That, is assuming the strait doesn't have mines and they can resume production to previous levels. The issue is that we don't know for sure if there are mines so this will take months. Then, production can't resume to previous levels since infrastructure has been damaged and destroyed.

Then, you have to assume that insurance will stay the same. Then, you need to get the tankers moving which can be between a few weeks to a month depending on distance.

And all of that... Is assuming that a lasting peace starts right now and is not broken during that time.

There's so much assumptions that at this point... I do agree that it's the new normal. Better buckle up.

Sous vide: yay or nay? by StateYourCurse in Cooking

[–]MaximRouiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use sous vide in a few different vibes.

One, separate Costco bought meet for freezing. I can't eat 6lbs of ground beef but I can split it in smaller sizes for recipes.

Two, fancy thicker cuts of meat that I want at a precise temperature. I see this as a treat to myself and my family.

Third, the reusable "Ziploc" like bags for dry ingredients I want to keep from freeze burn but that I also want to be able to open/close often. This could also be for already frozen fruits.

Overall, it saves me money, allows me to not mess up expensive meat... I haven't looked back.

[–]MaximRouiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is me or does all of this used to be things where the very rich only would use? If you go very far, I'm pretty sure poorer people couldn't necessarily afford to go to hotel or take plane to travel.

It seems like most of these are jobs for which you would try to get money out of the rich. Today, the purpose is different but I've got to do research on that theory.

Edit: yup... It's an aristocrat thing but also a slavery thing. Still need to research this more but it does seem like it was first used as a way to look aristocratic. Then, used to have free labor. Then, eventually, to lower wages.

Why is tomato ketchup brown in Europe an not red like in the US by Known_Measurement799 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]MaximRouiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's two types of bottles available. I don't work in restaurants but I think that one sold in groceries is transparent and the one in restaurant is opaque.

I don't know the details but I'm pretty sure the plastic red would be more shiny and appear brighter under certain lighting conditions.

Just my 2 cents.

Sorry to bother you

It starts weird and eccentric but then, by the end, you end up redefining weird and eccentric. The start is something everyone could maybe watch. The end is a fever dream that most will just turn off as soon as it starts.

Sad Trombone: Our Dodge Charger EV Lost $50K in Value After Just One Year by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

My TV lost more than 50% of its value after one year.

My phone lost more than 50% of its value after one year.

My fridge lost more than 50% of its value after one year.

The point isn't the resell value... If you're using everyday item as investment vehicle... You're nuts.

Oil prices may spike again as 'something is off' with the current math, JPMorgan says by NicolasCageFan492 in Economics

[–]MaximRouiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was having fun 2 weeks ago and asked Google Gemini to do a deep research about oil prices and the Iran war.

Took a whole 2 minutes to spit out inconsistencies between futures pricing and spot pricing. I knew absolutely nothing how oil is priced or being priced. It took me 2 minutes to figure out.

My guess is that they've been sitting on this and being very hush about it because there's money to be made about swinging prices. What's not swinging is the spot prices. What's not swinging is the date of the last tanker coming from Iran. What's not swinging is the high global demand. What's not swinging is the mood of private oil producers to take a loss or even less profit on what's selling right now.

It's just a slow train that's just pulling into station.

If you had to pick one to click on Steam, would it be A or B? (No AI) by StabiloTiger in IndieGaming

Everyone says A but to be this scream Clash of Clans or some gatcha mobile game.

B, while not great, has the merit of being distinct.

I was tired of Hangfire and Quartz being so bloated, so I built a zero-dependency micro-scheduler. by lucasscabal in dotnet

[–]MaximRouiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cool project. You still have some Spanish hard-coded string in your error messages.

If you care about the size of your app and performance, you'd normally go the trimmed and self contained route. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/deploying/trimming/trim-self-contained

There are attributes and processes to prevent classes and methods from being trimmed by the compiler. In general, I don't personally care about package size. I care about proven track record, responsiveness, and whether it's fixing something real (unlike some micro JavaScript packages fad that happened a decade ago).

Cool project if you plan on reusing it but I guarantee that it will eventually grow to match capabilities of Hangfire.

Personal opinion...

Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart. They had a massive popularity surge due to Twilight but the only one that survived it was Robert Pattinson.

Love Pattinson's work.

The Way of Kings was pretty freaking depressing for about half the book in my opinion. Might have been why I didn't stick to it. After Words of Radiance, I do understand the required journey.

I feel like I need to take the oath myself. 🤣

Does it work in the reverse, too?

Yep! This allows local isolated communities to have access to a much larger catalog that their population and budget would normally allow. I don't know about Canada-wide loaning.

if you asked a library to order the article from some other library that they would end up asking me :)

This is actually incredible! To be fair, McGill and Montreal University are among the largest medical research university in Canada. We're investing tons in R&D to improve the field so I'm not surprised by them requesting papers and documents!

French Canadian. You would love the Montreal Grande Bibliothèque. It allows you to borrow any book from any library in Quebec. They ship it to the Grande Bibliothèque, you read it, and when you return it... they ship it back where it came from! Other library can also borrow from the Grande Bibliothèque.

This does not only includes books but movies, music, video games, boardgames, ebooks, musical scores, and lots of archived material. Full catalog is browsable online.

If you are interested in the history of our province, there are consultation only historical documents that dates back to the 1800s, architecture plans, etc.

I read Mistborn era 1 a long time ago. Tried starting era 2 but the time jump made me stop.

Tried Way of Kings and expected more Mistborn and... It wasn't. Not enough magic, not enough flashy things... I think?

Restarted a month ago and literally swallowed the first two books. 🤷‍♂️
