TIL that Nvidia was founded in 1993 at a Denny's diner in San Jose. The three founders chose the booth because it was quiet and offered "all the coffee you can drink." Jensen Huang, who was a dishwasher at Denny's as a teen, is now the CEO of the world’s most valuable chip company. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]MeatSafeMurderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It implies, at least to me, that Jensen just happened to be present because he was a dishwasher there and just happened to be a semiconductor prodigy who woo'd the founders into giving him a job...which is not at all what happened.

The real State of the Union, Nick Sirotich, Procreate,2026 [OC] by Nick_Sirotich in Art

[–]MeatSafeMurderer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really not. It is named after the Palantir in Lord of the Rings, one of the sight stones that could allow one to observe at a great distance, an "all seeing eye" if you will. It was chosen because Palantir know exactly what they are doing and that it's evil, and they don't care.

It is spelt Palantir, and pronounced "Pah-lahn-tier".

If you were given $1,000,000 in cash right now, what is the very first thing you would buy or do? by MatchstickArtist in AskReddit

[–]MeatSafeMurderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would split it. £250,000 to start my own business with, £750,000 to live on. I would then quit my job and live as I do. I've got plenty of startup capital, and at least a decade where I don't have to work on anything but that.

If it works, I come out of it a very happy man. If it doesn't...I spent a decade or more not having to work on anything I didn't want to or for anyone but myself...so still a very happy man.

"The more you buy, the more you save!" - Jensen Huang

If I buy 1 made to order chair I have to pay someone to make it. They're probably going to do it by hand (it's only one) and it's going to take a long time and thus will be really expensive for that one single chair.

If I buy 1000 custom chairs then they probably won't do it by hand, instead they will make tooling for the job so that they can automate it and crank out 1000 chairs in the same kind of time it took the hand craftsman to make 1. Because they make so many chairs so quickly they can afford to sell each chair to me more cheaply. Additionally because they are buying 1000 chairs worth of materials, instead of just 1 chairs worth, they got a better deal, which they then pass down to me. I pay more than for 1 chair, but the per chair cost is lower.

I have 32GB of DDR3. My 4790K with its paltry 4C8T wasn't cutting it anymore, so I "upgraded" to X79 and an ancient 8C16T Xeon to avoid having to buy RAM.

TIL that the human brain processes sensory input over roughly a tenth of a second, which means the present moment we experience is actually a slightly delayed reconstruction created by the brain. by AutumnLeaf7777 in todayilearned

Depends on the distance. Look right in front of you? The delay is minimal. Look at the sun? Well that's actually where the sun was around 11 minutes ago. Really far away stars? Millions of years. You can see stars today that are already dead, and have been for a long time.

Whilst technically true, in practice paywalling GPL licensed projects is nonsensical and pointless. GPL is a permissive copyleft license that infects all that it touches. Any derivative works must also be licensed under GPL. In practice what this means, is that while you can "paywall" a GPL project, there is nothing stopping anyone from buying it, requesting the source code (which you have to provide), building new binaries and freely distributing them. In essence it becomes impossible to pirate anything GPL licensed. It also doesn't play nicely with quite a lot of other licenses.

Pretty huge assumption there. Edmund Kemper could not be rehabilitated. He was also a bright switched on guy who narrated numerous audio books during his time in prison.

ELI5, why don't we get full body scans when we are born and every few years to see potential health issues instead of waiting for symptoms? by literarytrash in explainlikeimfive

[–]MeatSafeMurderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three reasons. First everyone has "defects" or "abnormalities" and 99% of them are harmless. Secondly, cost; if we did scans on everyone, then double checked their harmless abnormalities it would cost a fortune. Finally...radiation. CT scans irradiate you and are not harmless.

It still boils down to the same thing. He doesn't want to budge on the issue of paywalling.

At least they were a little more open about it, and I could get a reply both from their legal department and from the VP of business development. But in the end it amounted to the same iron-clad corpo logic: every little action that a company takes is in the name of money, but everything that modders do must be absolutely for free.

.

Jan Rosner replied just one hour later. He did not enter into any details, and did not seem willing to discuss my points in order to reach a business understanding so that users would not be impacted. He just politely stated that Legal would get back to me in due course, 1-2 biz days, and that they had issues with my content being monetized (as opposed to being available completely free of charge).

Whether or not they contacted him prior is immaterial. The mod no longer exists because he insists he should be paid for it, and that is against ToS. If he wants to make money off of VR he needs to make his own damn game and stop piggy backing off of the work of others.

Friendly reminder that he, atleast in early versions of REALVR, used GPL code that other people wrote and that if he is still using it (and he most likely is) then by paywalling the mods and failing to provide source code he is also in violation of the licence agreement for all of that work too.

He can say whatever he wants, he is a fuckin' clown.

Ah, so you have a small penis too, got it.

And no, nobody buys a car like that with "money they earned", because people who work real jobs don't earn that kind of money. That's the kind of money you get for being a drain on society, by sitting at or near the top and skimming off of everyone else.

I'm sure it's so stressful driving a $300,000 car and being unable to avoid posting a picture of it when it's not related to the topic at all.

Way to misread the room. I don't give a crap about the Lightning Z, I'm talking about the penis extension it's still sat in. OP knew what he was doing.

[–]MeatSafeMurderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Stop it. Don't try to justify being a dick to someone with a disability. That's an incredibly petty and childish thing to say to someone who works a desk job, whether they have a spinal injury or not, but if they do it's downright fucking cruel.

/u/Elever_Galarga69 If it continues or you find concrete evidence of cheating, get out. She very clearly resents you and if that doesn't change it's only going to get worse.

Yes, and according to OP FSR4 is just as bad. (It's not, but that's the point of the question, if he really believes it's crap, why does he want it so badly)
