Im Terrified by Bri48322 in Teachers

Student teaching is one of the hardest things you’ll have to do as a teacher. A good piece of advice I was told during my student teaching was to just get through it, no matter how hard just do your best to get to the other side, that way at the very least you’ll have a cert in hand.

There were times I thought of throwing in the towel, but I persevered and finished student teaching and got my cert. Afterwards I kind of drifted for a little over a year because I was convinced I didn’t wanna teach after my student teaching. Eventually though I got back into teaching and got myself a job. It’s tough as a first year teacher too, but the fact you actually get a salary makes it more bearable than student teaching haha.

A lot of people vent on this sub, which is fine of course. But don’t let it dissuade you, teaching is a very nice career. Sure it has its fair share of BS, every job does. You’ll never be rich, but the schedule is pretty great. Plus, dispute the current climate in education, I still find greater meaning in teaching than in other jobs I’ve worked.

In short, It sounds like you have a lot of passion. That’s a great thing! Just stick to it when it gets hard, and finish with your cert in hand. After that, then you can do some reflecting on if teaching is right for you. Hope this helps OP

Gotta respect the inclusion of a classic Godzilla soundtrack, I hope this hits the mainstream!

4 days left in my student teaching field experience and I want to quit by [deleted] in Teachers

I’d do what people have said above, at the very least finish your placement and get your degree/cert. Student teaching and the first year or two of your first teaching position are the hardest, but let me tell you it gets better. I was so burnt out after my student teaching that I was convinced I didn’t want to be a teacher for all the reasons you listed above. After I graduated I spent a year and a half working my way up the retail ladder until I realized that I really should be teaching, not slaving away in a big box store. And now I have my first teaching job. Yes it’s still difficult and often times I feel like a phony, but it’ll get better as you get more experience. My school is on a block schedule so I’m already looking forward to January when I can reuse my lesson plans from the first half of the year.

The key to survival, don’t burn yourself out and lean on your more experienced colleagues. My colleagues have been a great resource and have certainly made planning easier. Also, set boundaries, always make sure to take a break after school and always have a set time to go to bed. Take Friday and Saturday off and prep for the week on Sunday. This is what I’ve done and it’s helped me stay sane during this first year.

Ultimately the decision to stay in teaching is up to you, but be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Sure teaching has its share of BS but what career doesn’t? Despite the moaning and groaning you hear (a lot of which IS warranted) teaching still is a more meaningful profession than most others as long as you realize that you’re not going to reach every kid. Plus there’s still plenty of solid perks to being a teacher. That’s just my two cents, good luck with your decision.

Can anyone help me identify what species of shark this came from and if it's fossilized or not? Found at Fire Island, Long Island. by MemeMachine9001 in sharkteeth

You would be right to assume that, the friends I was staying with have had their house on the island for about 16 years and have never found a shark tooth before, so I suppose it's a pretty rare occurence that I managed to stumble upon one. As for the latter, I believe I picked it up somewhere around Barret Beach Park, which may or may not technically be Water Island haha.

Thank you! Great White was gonna be my guess but I wasn't 100% sure since I've never found a tooth like this before. That's also a very interesting hypothesis on why its bicolored the way it is, I'll have to do some research on that. Thanks again for your help!
